The Perfect Song(s)

September 25th, 2008 @ 6:04 pm by Mrs. Spring Roll

For several months I have been searching for the perfect first dance song. Most articles and websites list the same songs over and over again. While beautiful, the songs did not give me the “oh my gosh this is the song” feeling . I quickly became discouraged and gave up my search for the perfect song. Within a few days, not one, but two songs randomly graced my ears.

“First Day of My Life” by Bright Eyes

And “All I Have to do is Dream” cover by Jack’s Mannequin

What do you think? What song did you choose for your first dance?

In that first vidoe, the woman with the picture of a guy made me almost cry. Maybe my imagination is too active. I kept coming with reasons why he wasn’t there and all of them were said.
Anywho, although both are good, I love Oldies so I would go with “all I have to do is dream”

The Bright Eyes song is almost a wedding classic!! We wanted something different too and chose a song by Fiest calld “Mushaboom” it was silly and sweet and has a line that goes “I’ve found a man to stick it and make home out of rented house” ….it was perfect for us!

I love them both!! It’s a tough choice, but I’m leaning towards All I Have to Do is Dream because it’s classic but the cover is unexpected. Plus, it’s such a sweet song!

Both are cute! There is another version to All I have to do is dream by Patti… it’s gorgeous!

They are both great, but the second one seems like it would be easier to dance to.

I’ve always loved that bright eyes song and have to use it in our wedding at some point. My only concern was if it was “danceable”. practice and let me know! :P

We’re going to use the Bright Eyes song! My fiance sang it to me on my birthday the first year we were dating…and it totally made me cry. Yep. I’m going to be sobbing at my wedding, there’s no doubt about it. I’m not to worried about the dancing part–we’re pretty much embrace and sway people. It’s such a sweet song.

@BEL: Those are great songs, thanks for sharing.

@melodicsighs: I was thinking the same thing :) I would really like to use both songs somehow.

That Bright Eyes video NEVER fails to bring a little tear to my eye. It’s so sweet and endearing. I was considering that one, too. :)

Augh. Love it. The Bright Eyes video gives me goosebumps. Especially at the end when the guy is pointing to his girl and saying “I love her!”

I think Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz used this song as their first dance at their wedding. Maybe?

“First Day of My Life” is the song that plays on our wedding website. I think it would make a lovely first song.

i love the “first day of my life” — thanks for sharing it with us! and that video is so interesting and very sweet.

anyway, the things i’d say is practice dancing to both — the full length of the song. 3 minutes doesn’t sound long but if you’re not great at having people stare at you and don’t love dancing you might end up doing the 7th grade sway for what might feel like a really looooong time. give them each a try in your living room first!

My goal was to have a song that not many/if any would recognize. We chose “I Have and Always Will” by Dave Barnes and it was a hit! We had a bunch of people asking what it was and who it was by at the end of the night. My husband doesn’t like to dance, he’s a “swayer” (only sways back and forth and move in a small circle) so this one was perfect since it’s fairly slow.

I don’t know if you like CatPower, but she did a great cover of ‘All I have to do is Dream’

I was going to use M Wards cover of ‘Sadie’, originally by Joanna Newsom as our first dance song… but we ended up finding the perfect first dance song for us.

The Virgin Suicides is one of my favorite movies, so we incorporated the theme song - Air ‘Playground Love’ into our ceremony music, and then there is a great acoustic cover of the same song sung by a band called Phoenix - that was our song for the first dance… so sweet, and so our story :)

The music was my favorite favorite part about planning our wedding, have fun!!!

We had a really hard time picking a first dance song, but ended up using Ben Folds “The luckiest”

I am so obsessed with that Bright Eyes song. It’s one of those weird ones that Mr. Avocado just doesn’t understand. I try and make him listen to it over and over but he just shakes his head and laughs.

Two awesome choices! I must be living under a rock bc I never heard “First Day of My Life” before your post! Thanks for the introduction, Miss Spring Roll - I choose Bright Eyes. The lyrics are amazing!!

Two totally different and awesome choices. Both songs will have to be incorporated into your day. Which one moves you most?

For the longest time, I thought that we’d dance to “At Last” but it’s been done so many times so we ended up using it for our entrance (ok, it’s also a nod to the fact that we’ve been together for 14 years). Another choice was “Better Together” by Jack Johnson (also been used as first dance material on a frequent basis) - we used it for our cake cutting cuz I liked the song and lyrics but didn’t necessarily want to dance to it.

We danced to “Save Me a Saturday Night” by Neil Diamond. It is such an amazing song and struck all the right cords for us and no one had ever heard of it. In fact, one of our co-bestmen had to go and buy the CD to give to our DJ as he didn’t have the song.

Good Luck!

Oh my gosh…I did not know that Jacks Mannequin did a cover of All I Have to Do is Dream!!! I ADORE the Everly Brothers; I grew up listening to them with my dad…and Jacks Mannequin is quite possibly one of my favorite bands (I love the piano!) Do you know if there is there a non-live version of that song…or at least one without fans screaming?
