About Mrs. Shortcake

A Journey of Three Thousand Miles

September 26th, 2008 @ 10:29 am by Mrs. Shortcake

sc1

…begins with two in-laws, one groom, one big fraidy-dog, one teeny dog too big for his britches, four suitcases, a dozen boxes of wedding paraphernalia, one hoop skirt, one super big *ss petticoat, one couture wedding gown, and one bride and her camera.

sc2

We left Winnipeg before dawn, with Mr. Shortcake’s parents’ van packed to the ceiling, and Mr. Shortcake, Harvey, and I none-too-comfortably wedged in the back seat between coolers and suitcases. I was still sick-sick-sick, so my new friend Mr. Boogie Cloth traveled alongside of me.

sc3

(Mr. Boogie cloth and his ever-so-absorbent self surveys the prairies)

Driving across the Canadian Prairies is and was pretty uneventful. We did get to experience the thrill of “Grand Valley” as we left Manitoba—a boomtown built around the only hills for thousands of miles.

sc4

(Woo hoo! Quite the adrenaline rush, I must say. *cough*)

Harvey, on the other hand, was unimpressed with the molehills that Manitoba had to offer, and spent much of the first leg sleeping in my purse, because that’s just what he does.

sc5

Saskatchewan was similarly, erm, flat.

sc6

But the landscape was occasionally spruced up with a tree or three:

sc7

Or a train or two:

sc8

(I love the picture below because it illustrates why my new camera hands-down beats my old one—I took this picture after being jarred awake by Mr. Shortcake, and was able to open the camera case, take off the lens cap, turn it on, change the setting, focus, zoom, and click in two seconds. TWO SECONDS. My old small silver couldn’t even turn on in under five! :) )

sc9

And sometimes a salt flat made us wake up and go “Oh, cool” before falling back asleep.

sc10

For all of my sarcasm, I did find the Prairies quite beautiful. There’s always something about Big Sky Country that makes you feel singularly insignificant.

sc11

And there are always poignant reminders of our country’s past along the way:

Oh the Saskatchewan prairie….my extended family lives in Prince Albert, SK and during my childhood summers my family would drive there from Calgary (where the other half of the extended family lives), first through a bit of the badlands, where no radio station dares to tread, and then over eight hours of uninterrupted prairie. You’ve captured the scenery perfectly and made it look so beautiful.

Speaking as a person who usually heads west for vacations (mountains and water = love), you’re making me almost want to go east. It’s very beautiful. Maybe it’s the sun and open skies and that’s just lovely.

I’m looking forward to our journey through my city and my favourite province (BC)!

How long did the whole journey take you?

What kind of camera is your new one? I’m in the market for a new camera for exactly that reason.

The only time I visited the prairies, I was too young to enjoy it. Your beautiful photos made me want to go on a cross-Canada road trip - again!

I’m sorry to hear that you are sick! :( I used to get strep throat all the time until my tonsils came out. I don’t miss them (or strep throat) one bit! I hope that you feel better soon

Yay for traveling with a hoop skirt! I had a fashion show in Ontario and had a hard time getting over the border with a vehicle stuffed full of hoop skirts and fluffy dresses. I think they thought all the poofiness was covering up something illegal!

I’ve taken a similar roadtrip through Manitoba and Saskatchewan but I never got pictures like that. They are seriously fabulous.

@Jessica: I’m still using my first DSLR, the Lumix DMC FZ18 with Leica lens (http://www.digitalreview.ca/Content/Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-FZ18-Digital-Camera.shtml). It’s really good as that in between step between point and shoot silver compacts and fully fledged DSLRs. It’s still scary (to a beginnger like me, anyway :) but much less so than starting with something like the Canon eos 5d (probably my next purchase).
NOTE however, that I will be selling this camera very soon because of the chromatic noise that arises at really low ISOs - I basically cannot shoot in low light (I hate flash). So, I wouldn’t recommend it on that point, but if you aren’t planning t do any profesisonal photography/looking to upgrade to something schmancier, it’s excellent as a “better than a point and click” - the difference in quality is still HUGE compared to regular hand helds.

this really makes me miss hitchhiking. as boring as it got after a while, i LOVED driving through the prairies. seeing how the earth curves on the horizon… yea. it’s pretty bizarre.

i’m jealous of your road trip and i can’t wait for the rockies pictures. that’s my absolute favourite place in the country.
