October 18th: The Sweetest Day

October 18th: The Sweetest Day :  wedding pittsburgh Picture021{image}

When Mr. Pineapple and I first started talking about possible wedding dates, our first thought was sometime in October. We were looking at venues more than a year in advance were surprised by how limited the available dates were, especially here in somewhat sleepy western, PA. Our goal date was October 25th, simply because it was a nice simple number. When we decided to get married at The Rivers Club, a bar mitvah was booked for October 25th, so October 18th became our new future wedding anniversary.

I immediately added “Wedding!!!” to my calendar and discovered that October 18th was noted as “Sweetest Day”. I thought, “Well, that’s cute, but what the heck is Sweetest Day?” So, I turned to the knower of all things, the internet.

So, what is Sweetest Day?

Celebrated on the third Saturday of every October, it is pretty much Valentine’s Day to celebrate people you just like a lot, in addition to those you love. It is described by Retail Confectioners International as an “occasion which offers all of us an opportunity to remember not only the sick, aged and orphaned, but also friends, relatives and associates whose helpfulness and kindness we have enjoyed.”

You know how a lot of people say Valentine’s Day was just invented by greeting card and candy makers to drum up business? There are two stories that describe the origin of Sweetest Day. One story is that it originated as an act of philanthropy by a candy company employee named Herbert Birch Kingston who wanted to give gifts to the forgotten, such as orphans and shut-ins. The other story is that it really was invented by candy makers.

The first mention of The Sweetest Day can be found in the October 8th, 1921 edition of the Cleveland newspaper, The Plain Dealer. The paper says that the holiday was planned by a committee of 12 candy makers. The Sweetest Day in the Year Committee distributed over 20,000 boxes of candy to “newsboys, orphans, old folks, and the poor”.

The Sweetest Day never really caught on like the candy makers had hoped. It is still celebrated by a few cities in the U.S. such as Cleveland, Buffalo, and Detroit. Pittsburgh is nestled amongst these cities, so I was surprised that I had never heard of the holiday before.

I don’t think my wedding date, July 19, is a holiday of any kind. But I did celebrate Sweetest Day last year! My DH is the one who actually brought it up and had some sweets and a sweet card for me when I got back from my trip on that day.

Cheers to Sweetest Day and your wedding day!

As a matter of fact, we are — September 19 is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. We’re considering saying “Aye!” instead of “I do.” ;-)

My wedding day is November 1, which is All Saints’ Day. I love the symbolism of it.

No holiday that I know of (May 16), but we did find out after we booked that it’s the anniversary of my parents’ first date! Which is pretty sweet, I think.

Caroline- us too! We considered September 19th because of “Talk like a pirate day.” We celebrated this year by telling cheesy pirate jokes and watching pirates of the Caribbean. It’s fun to share your anniversary with a random holiday!

I’m on the sweetest day, too, AND…it’s my stepmother’s birthday. We’re having a separate small cake made just for her.

I got married on the sweetest day last year! Hence, the candy buffet we had. Hehe. There’s so much stuff you can do with the theme. :-)

Almost! Our wedding date is July 3rd. I know it’s a good date because everyone loves a good 4th of July BBQ and bonfire! :)

I got married on Sweetest Day in October 2006. I had never heard of the holiday being from the West Coast, but one day swinging through theknot.com’s October 2006 wedding club message board, I happened upon a mide-western date twin who picked the date because it was Sweetest Day. I did a little reasearch and was pleased with that the day stood for, so we included a little blurb about the holiday in our program. In the end, everyone thought we picked the date because it was Sweetest Day, but only the hubby and I know the truth!

Our wedding day was 3 days before Mexican Independence Day (which is Sept. 16th), which was great b/c DH is 75% Mexican so we played a variety of music from there. AND all of his relatives where there to celebrate it!

halloween! i know it sound weird but it’s we love it and it also takes a lot of the pressure off of us to make it “fun.”
it is however kinda annoying because i’m constantly being asked if my dress is black, if we’re getting married in a graveyard, etc. and i’m like, noooo, it’s a normal wedding, you just get to wear a costume later.

Yep, as you know, we share the same wedding date and holiday - Sweetest day! Being from Ohio, for some reason Ohioans seem to know more about this holiday than Pennsylvanians…no idea why. But my parents have always given each other Sweetest Day cards, so I’ve known about it forever. But when I mention to people here in the Burgh’ that ‘I’m getting married on Sweetest Day’ I get a blank look and a bland…”ok”. Hahaha!
