Risky Business… the DIY Veil

September 26th, 2008 @ 5:45 pm by Miss Champagne

There are some things I’ve been absolutely positive about during this whole wedding process. I knew I would be involved in the invite design, and I knew I would wear a mantilla veil. But there’s one thing I can’t decide - do I dare make my own “dream veil”? So after many inspirational photos and ideas, I had to actually try some veils at a bridal shop to see if I could design something worth my time and energy.

Although I love the look of the mantilla, it’s tough to find one with a blusher that has lace edging. This blusher is far too long for me - it sits a little flat on my face, but it’s the general idea. More importantly, the woman on the wall behind me has lost her dress… what a shame.

And here ’tis after the ‘unveiling’… the only problem I have with this, is that it doesn’t have the lace along the hairline like the traditional veil.

So here’s the thing… I may somehow try to combine the traditional mantilla with lace all the way up, with the blusher one piece veil. It might end up being too much lace, but I’ll get a better idea once I can see the entire look - dress and all!

I’m thinking of sewing my own veil, but we’ll see where my motivation takes me… do I dare attempt?? Anyone else create your own veil? Did you actually start dress shopping with a particular veil style in mind?! I know I did!

Could you but the veil w/o the blusher and add one somehow?

The mantilla veil looks beautiful on you!! Are you set on having a blusher? I think adding one will take away from the look of the mantilla and it really looks lovely!

Beautiful veil! my sister in-law had a similar veil too when she got married!! :) She had someone sew the lace for her…and she got a good price for it too because her seamstress didn’t know how much work it requires.

Pretty! Pretty!- both you and the veil. I am making my own veil, so I’ll let you know if its a total disaster. I am not quite the DIY goddess that my fellow Bees are, but I try. =)

The veil is gorgeous. My sister made her own veil, it seemed to be rather easy. I plan on making mine as well. Good luck :)

Let me know if you are going to make the veil, I can share some tips for attaching the lace. :) I understand what you mean about the hairline, but in the “unveiled” picture the veil looks really pretty and delicate.

I am going to make my veil, but have no idea which style to use… so many options!!!

I bought a mantilla veil on etsy for $130. The woman may be able to make exactly what you are looking for. I haven’t received the veil yet but it does look gorgeous in the pictures. You can find her shop here:

You can usually buy the basic veil shape at Wal-Mart or a craft store. When I was costuming a play, I went and got one of these and then simply hand sewed the lace onto the edge. Now it wasn’t the highest quality tulle but I used fabulous lace so in the end it didn’t matter. Good Luck!

My mom is making mine…It is mantilla inspired, but I wanted the more traditional blusher shape, so we are definitely doing the lace on most of the border, but we may not do it above my shoulders…I feel better being able to play with it–in person, with my dress–before deciding…I realized I had more options than I thought when viewing OccanseyDesigns online, and I also like the lace selection that I’ve found online…most of it is white but they will dye to match for $15 total.
