Hair + Makeup

September 27th, 2008 @ 10:31 am by Miss Flip Flop

I had a hair + makeup run through with Anna from Makeover Majic recently. The trial was $100, which is a little steep, but I had heard wonderful things about Anna from other Disney brides and I figured the trial run was well worth the investment.

Here are the inspiration photos I brought:

(photos courtesy of Jim Hjelm Bridal)

I really like the combination of big loose curls and smokey eyes, especially when it’s half-up/half-down like this.

Here is a “Before” shot of normal Miss Flip Flop, courtesy of Disney’s Photo Pass:

And here is my hair/makeup after the trial run:

It’s really close to the pictures I gave her, but I just look really…”done”… you know what I mean? I was sort of uncertain about it when I first saw it, but she was such a sweetie I didn’t say anything. Plus, Mr. Flip Flop really liked it, so I figured it was just me. Maybe I’m just not used to seeing myself all done up. I already have her booked for the wedding, but I want to make sure that I’m comfortable on that day. I do think she did a good job, but I was very conscious of how done up I looked.

Ok, so seriously - the hair? The makeup? What do you think?

i loooove the hair, but i think maybe you need a softer lip — not so pink??

mrs. tttttttttt says:

hmm maybe it’s just me, but i don’t like the make up all that much, and the hairs look really nice from the back but the front is kinda plain, but honestly don’t you think u need the front to look a lil more better, since most of your picture will be the front shot?! i don’t know, maybe it’s just me

I like your makeup, and I like the soft curls on you, but maybe you could try parting your hair off center or on the side?

GetMarried4Less/LadyT says:

hmmm…she pretty much recreated the inspiration look….so you know her skill level is to your standard. keep looking for more inspirations. it seems the inspiration you picked is not you.

without knowing you, i can’t say whether it looks like you or not. i think the makeup looks great, but i’m not in love with the lip color. you have dark hair and eyes. so i think you’d look better with a deeper color. perhaps a rose, or a sheer berry stain.

lorbieski says:

love the back of your hair. the front seems a little flat - i like how in your sample pictures the model’s hair looked fuller and loosly pulled back in the front. i think if you put root booster or hairspray on the roots you can get more body up front. i agree on the less pink lip, but you don’t look overly done. once you have on your wedding dress you probably won’t feel so strange having heavier make-up.

bellenga says:

I love the back and do think the front needs to have a touch more style to it. Plus the makeup is pretty for daytime. But it will seem a bit washed out in photos.

There is a way to have great makeup in photos and not look like a clown btw.

Show the stylist your pics and explain it to her.

bellenga says:

Also the front and the dangly-ey pieces there looks a bit unpolished. I’d show her some more photos from Hjelm.

there is a gorgeous photo of a maggie sottero bride. She’s brunette with hair half up that’s gorgeous. I wish I could find the link…heck, here I go searching!

i love your makeup. it looks very soft and natural looking. maybe just add a little bit more lipstick. in terms of the hair, maybe the stylist can clean up the curls a little bit and make it more polished while adding some volume to it. other than that, i think it looks great!

Jo says:

I like the makeup - your eyes look stunning! - but the hair does look too “done.” I think it needs to be a little messier and looser if you really want it too look like the inspirational. For me it’s how tight the curls look in the back.

Are you going to put flowers in your hair or any cute combs or anything? Are you going to wear a vail? Remember these things that could really have an impact on your hairstyle. I agree about it being a little flat in the front, but beware of going bigger you might want to play with the part like someone suggested. Your lip color looks a little to shiny and yes like bellenga said, might wash you out for your pics, try something more matte. You have to feel comfy and hot on your wedding day girl, you should definitely let your hair and make-up lady know your not loving at much as you thought even though she got close to your inspiration pics.

I absolutely love the natural look on you! I agree with the previous commenters, the lip color may wash you out, and being that it’s winter, you should definitely consider giving yourself more color on your lips (not too much). Maybe a little bit more blush/bronzer on your cheeks too?

Your hair looks great in the back by the way! I have no idea, but it needs something different in the front :)

Nicole says:

The hair is gorgeous in the back, a side part and more soft/looser in the front would be really nice and complement your face well. I also think you should use some lashes in the corners of your eyes to make them pop, you have really pretty eyes and I think that would be a good feature to play up!

13.
Valerie says:

I agree with everyone’s comments. The color on your lips is too pink. In regards to your hairs, you need more volume. The curls are too close to your head/face and just kinda hang. I think this would make a huge difference.

14.
MissCricket says:

I think the lips need to be more matte, and she needs to put more color in your face overall! A more saturated lip & cheek will bring out your inner glow. I agree with Nicole that your eyes are beautiful and a few extra lashes would be fabulous, along with using a really great last curler on top. I think the hair is beautiful and will fall really nicely over the course of the night… :)

JanieLeigh says:

i love it. you look beautiful! i definitely don’t think you look too done up. it’s very natural looking. and the hair is beautiful! are you going to do a flower as well?

16.
V says:

Hair: parted on the side with a heavier bang.
Makeup: please NOT lindsey lohan’s lips…that pink doesn’t do favors to anyone! ;)

You look very nice!

I have worked as an appointment girl for over 5 years at a boston salon (this is only funny because in my “other” life I am a lawyer)! Anyway, I’ve seen more than my fair share of before and after brides: your look is definitely not over done, in fact it looks very natural, however I agree with a few other girls the lipstick is too pink its just not the right color for you. Try on lipstick until you find the right one. Also bigger is always better when it comes to hair: it ALWAYS falls. Good luck!

First off–you really look great, but if you’re not comfortable with it, you’re not comfortable with it. That said…

Maybe making it a less severe half up/down updo will help? Also, I agree with Miss Shortcake–side parts do wonders for creating drama without having to do anything…well…dramatic. I took inspiration from Vesper Lynd’s hairstyle during the last sequence from the most recent Casino Royale, and I loved it–got the hair off of my face without lacking the drama. Perhaps look for some more unconventional sources for inspiration? It is an excellent excuse to watch the great stylistically inspired films all over again. ;-)

As for the makeup–well, my monitor is awful right now, and I can’t get a good read on it, but something my makeup artist goes by is that he likes to make his brides look ethereal. Also, if you’re looking for inspiration for makeup, I STRONGLY suggest Kevyn Acouin’s Making Faces, as it’s chock FULL of ideas that range from everyday looks to super-dramatic ones. Plus, it’s filled with instructions on how to do it yourself, so…bonus. :-)

Hope this helps–you are a gorgeous girl, but try to embrace getting gussied up–you will have few excuses to do so in the future (because you’re not a big makeup girl), and it’ll make you feel like an amazing Disney bride!

Lizliterarius says:

I disagree…I LIKE the hair just the way it is! But the lipstick isn’t quite right if you want a natural look. One of my friends (political makeup artist) told me to pull down my bottom lip and match the inside color to a lipstick and boy did it work! I used to hate lipsticks because they never looked right and now I can always find one that looks natural, not ‘done.’
PS- I envy you the Disney wedding! We just couldn’t afford it no matter how we tried.

Miss Flip Flop says:

THANK YOU!!!

I can’t even tell you how nice it is to be getting all these honest opinions and suggestions. After I started showing these photos around, I just kept getting the same reaction: “don’t worry about it, you look fine.” But I just felt like something was off and I really want fix it if I can.

Totally got you loud and clear on the pink lipstick and I’ll start looking for a new one. That tip about matching the color of the inside of your lip is awesome, I’d never heard that before. It also hadn’t even occurred to me to not use glossy lipstick…I guess I should have kept changing my style after 1999.

We ended up doing engagement pictures later this day and the makeup actually came out ok in them, but I think it could be taken up a notch for the wedding. I don’t mind looking dramatic…but I really want to avoid looking plastic. (if that makes sense?)

Still unsure about the hair. I get that there’s issues with the front and I’m gathering that bigger would be better. The one tricky thing is that I won’t see Anna before the wedding day, so I don’t want to change it up on her too much. It seems like a bad day to be experimental.

Again thank you for all your help! (…and more is always welcome!!!!)

Miss Flip Flop says:

Oh, and as far as having something in my hair (flower, clip, tiara…) I’m only planning on having a veil and it’s one of those ones from the fabric store that comes on a plastic comb. Can you tell I have no idea what I’m doing when it comes to this sort of thing? I’m not sure exactly what will happen, but I’m assuming Anna will know how to stick that thing on the back of my head somehow. I love the flower look in the inspiration pics, but there’s no way I could handle that extra little complication…

MRS. SKI says:

Love the hair. Not enough make-up. Pick one feature you want to highlight, like eyes, and glam them up with fake eyelashes or smoky make-up. Use a neutral or light pink lip. When you feel like you have too much on, that is the right amount for pictures and to just last the whole day.

23.
Ginaellen says:

I am a wedding photographer and am sometimes with a bride when she hasn’t had a trial. It is a common reaction to feel like you have too much make-up on.

But you have to remember: it looks great in photos, if you dress is white or cream you need striking make-up or you will disappear, it looks great to everyone else but you are just not used to wearing this much make-up, you have to get through a long day and while you can touch up your make-up during the day many brides forget to. Also the curls will drop out throughout the day and become looser and more natural looking.

I think it looks nice and quite natural. Congrats!

24.
jade says:

the hair is beautiful, she did a great job. the curls will probably loosen up through the day, no?

i think you’re hesitant about the look because from the looks of it, the make up is definitely more than you normally wear. she really played up your eyes and made them stand out quite a bit… and your brow looks stronger than it in the first picture. remember when it comes to your pro pics and the outdoor lighting good makeup is a must. you look very natural still just done up more.

i think the pink gloss/lipstick may look too pink, but also think about what you’re actually wearing in your picture above. your hair and makeup look very out of context compared to your outfit. when you try on your beautiful gown the look may be more appropriate.

25.
Katharine says:

Actually I don’t think you look overdone at all - I think your eyes and lips could both be darker! I agree the hair could be a little fuller in the front too. But she did a pretty good job overall!

26.
Queen of the Click says:

I like your hair and your eyes. I think I would use a rosier color on your lips.

You may look “done” because your not smiling like the first pic.

A hair clip veil from any store is fine - it’s white and it’s going to look great!

27.
wassawas says:

I think you look much better in the before picture. Go with your instincts, you already feel like “something is off”.
She may be very lovely but probably not the right makeup artist for you; you’ll be much happier if you cancel and go with someone else. There are lots of great makeup artists around the winter park area. I wish i could remember the names :(

28.
jenineditzlerhotmailcom says:

I have to say that you look beautiful! You have to remember you are looking at yourself all done up and the attire does not match yet. I have been doing hair for 11 years and most brides that go for their pre bridal never get the same hair for their wedding. You want your make up to show for the pictures and it is the one and only day that you will be the princess, why not play the part?

29.
Kenziegirl says:

I agree with the girls on the pink lipcolor. I also think that you should have more definition on your face… blush, bronzer, highlighter, something. It’s a blank palette and there’s so much you can do to accentuate it without looking over the top.

30.
Lisa says:

I totally know how you feel about feeling too “done up.” I am a person who on a daily basis wears my hair down and straight, and virtually no makeup. But for my wedding I went with a totally different look - I had my hair curled on the top of my head and a professional do my make-up and I basically told her just to make me look fabulous. I felt ridiculous at first, especially in my jeans and blouse, but once you put your dress on everything falls into place and that dramatic look totally fits. I LOVE my wedding pictures even though I know I had a different look going. I like to say it was a “once in a lifetime look for a once in a lifetime day.” So, I think it’s definitely helpful to see the hair and make-up look with your wedding dress if that’s at all possible, since everyone looks more glamorous in their wedding dress than in street clothes. Hope this helps!

31.
nicole says:

i like the makeup. in fact, the pink lip looks nice to me. it could be a little more deep, but not much.
i do think you need a little more blush or contouring on your cheeks.

as far as your hair. i like it! maybe a little bit more volume in the front to make it more dramatic, but i wouldn’t really change it much.

32.
Sarah says:

I personally think if you can fork out for a good quality hair piece you will get the look of volume in your hair like the model :-)

33.
Sara says:

I agree with others that you should go with your gut instinct. Something about how she did your makeup makes your eyes look tired, and I know it’s just the makeup because you don’t look tired in the first pic. :)

34.
Sharmeen says:

I like the hair … but something doesn’t seem right with the make-up. I think you need more blush, or a little darker on the lips and lighter on the eyes.

35.
cannotwait says:

a side part & more volume on top?
