One frustrating aspect of having a 1950s-inspired vintage wedding is that many people, after having asked you about your wedding, simply don’t understand what on earth you are talking about. “Ooh!” they cry, “A 1950s wedding? So, like Grease? Are you going to wear a poodle skirt?” D’oh! Yes, we are having a 1950s wedding. Yes, poodle skirts were a fad in the 1950s, but for the teenager set! I’ve always been a fan of mid-century romantic comedies (Tea For Two, anyone?), so my wedding vision was predominantly inspired by those celluloid film images, rather than Rizzo and crew. In particular, Marilyn Monroe served as the direct inspiration for our colour scheme—

Our colour scheme:

  • black (tuxedos, limos)
  • greys (text throughout the wedding, silver jewelry and pumps for the bridesmaids)
  • peachy-pink (invitations, flowers, centerpiece birds, table numbers, candy buffet)
  • shell/ballet pink (invitation ribbons, candy buffet, bridesmaid dresses, table numbers, bouquet ribbons, flowers)
  • pearl (jewelry for the wedding party and bride, bouquet ribbons, wedding gown, candy buffet, centerpiece birds, flowers, church flowers and decorations, invitations, linens)
  • red (candy buffet, invitations)
  • gold/mustard (invitations, candy buffet, table numbers, flowers, linens)
  • yellow (candy buffet, table numbers, flowers)
  • butter cream (candy buffet, table numbers, flowers)
  • fawn (table numbers)
  • sparkle (not pictured—everywhere!) :)

One wedding detail that directly plays into our starlet’s boudoir/vintage glam/classic feminine elegance colour scheme is our card box…

MATERIALS:

  • boxes
  • paper of your choice
  • double sided tape, packing tape, and glue gun
  • ribbons and decorations of your choice
  • patience
  • creativity

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • arrange boxes to your liking
  • cut slot into biggest box
  • wrap and decorate boxes to your liking
  • glue boxes together
  • admire!

My mother was all hands-on deck with this project. It was her brilliant idea to cut out gold card stock numbers, and glue them so that they “stepped down” the pile of boxes and spelled out our wedding date:

I tried my hands at making a “floofy bow” (technical term, try to follow along), and succeeded, I think. :)

We layered all sorts of ribbons and patterned papers to not only match our colour scheme, but to give off a “vintage bridal shower” vibe as well:

“Gift tags” were cut out, layered, and attached to our “presents”—we hoped the “thank you!” would be a subtle way of letting guests know what the box was intended for. The numbers as well, we hoped, would be a dead giveaway that the pile wasn’t just another group of gifts! :)

As added security, my mother also filled one of the boxes with jingle bells, so that if any not-so-honest person or wedding crasher tried to sticky-finger their way out of the tent, the box would give off a loud and merry alarm-of-sorts (Paranoid, maybe, but we would rather be safe than sorry in this day and age)!

THE FINISHED PRODUCT:

I think it fits in well with our vintage theme and colour scheme. What say you, Marilyn? ;)

I love your card box! Our card box is going to be a stack of gift boxes as well. The bells is a great security feature! I might be borrowing that idea :)

I’m TOTALLY stealing this idea Shortie! Like you, my wedding isn’t where I live, so I need something I can make onsite in the days leading up to my wedding! Thanks for the inspiration!

I’ve been hesitant to read Weddingbee post-wedding because I didn’t want to be upset about seeing gorgeous things that I could’ve had at my own. Shortie - you win for being the first to upset me! :) I love this! I covet this! I can’t wait to see all of your details. How awesome!
