On the Road Again…

September 30th, 2008 @ 10:25 am by Mrs. Pinot Noir

Having a destination wedding isn’t exactly eco-friendly. The majority of our guests have to fly to San Francisco and will stay in a hotel for several nights. I have blogged before about using carbon credits as a way to offset your wedding travel and celebration.

In addition to carbon credits, there are many other ways to “green” your transportation.

We will be providing a shuttle bus to take guests from the hotel in San Francisco to the ceremony and reception in Napa Valley (about 70 miles each direction). We offered this as an option to every guest, and about 2/3 are taking us up on the offer and riding the bus. Many other guests will be carpooling. Imagine the amount of energy we’ll save by reducing the number of cars on the road. This is also great, because it is a safe transport that will allow our guests to enjoy the day without worrying about driving home after having had too much to drink.

At one point I asked Mr. PN if we could exit the reception in a Prius. He said no (I didn’t even ask for bicycles!). Since we wouldn’t be doing anything overtly eco-friendly, I did the next best thing I could think of—I booked a company that has eco-friendly business practices. California Wine Tours provides transportation and tour services for Northern California. The reason I choose CWT was because of their “Green Fleet.” They have a fleet of hybrid vehicles including the Prius, Lexus, Suburban and 14-passenger minibus. Even though we reserved a traditional limo and town car, we are investing in a green business. Wedding planning, like marriage, requires compromise, and I am glad that we could support this business even if we wont be biking off into the sunset.

Carbon conscious Los Angeles brides can check out Evolimo and Hawaiian brides can choose Bio-Beetle for green wedding transport. Several national car rental agencies offer hybrid vehicles including Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Hertz and Avis. Orbitz even hosts a Eco-Travel page with environmentally friendly hotels, cars, and vacations.

Are you using any energy efficient modes of transport on your wedding day?

We can walk to and from our reception! :) If we get a hotel, we will use one that is walking distance. :)

We will probably use my hybrid, but there is also a green fleet here in Austin.

Does it count if we are having the ceremony + reception at the same place? We’ve eliminated the need for transportation all together!! :)

I really love your eco-friendly ideas! They continue to inspire me.

@ carly7215 - that totally counts! we are doing that too. and there is a hotel directly across the street for guests after the evening. even though I wasn’t thinking about how “green” we would be, I guess we did a great job planning it that way!
