Floral Fantasy

September 30th, 2008 @ 12:51 pm by Mrs. Meatball

At our reception, we’ll be serving dinner family style, and we will probably push tables together to form seatings of eight on the main floor. I quickly realized this would limit the space for florals, as we don’t want people having to worry about knocking them down as they reach for more hummus while dodging candles. I have always preferred simple table florals to keep the space intimate anyway, and with budget in mind, I set out to find the best choice for us.

When I stumbled across Maura & Bryan’s St. Regis wedding on the fabulous Wedding Chicks blog (designed by the talented Stephanie Lairson), I was immediately drawn in by their style—a little edgy and definitely bold, but still romantic. Then, I saw this…

I love the vibrant, exotic orchid with the drama of the blue water plunge, and the earthiness of the black sand. This is a great way to bring color into the room while keeping things simple, wallet friendly, and DIY-able! I’m also tinkering with the idea of using small pebbles or river rocks at the base, rather than sand. Have I mentioned that I love the drama that a few really tall pieces can add to a room? Well, I do! I’m completely in love with this design—I think it will be fierce.

P.S.—How cute would these be for a garden or rustic wedding? They’re only $2.99 each at IKEA!

Are you leaning towards small or grand centerpieces?

I had green floating orchids in a 20″ cylindrical vase. Some river rocks in the bottom to anchor. It was so simple and totally vowed our guests! :)

We’re also using black river rocks and purple water with white and purple orchids. Our square, cylinder, short and tall vases will add character and depth as well. These are great pix!

Small was definitely the way to go for us. My reception was also at a restaurant. I *loved* the intimate feel of a bunch of small arrangements on the tables. And of course, guests loved taking them home. These served as my “favors.” Who doesn’t love fresh flowers?

Hi Ms. Meatball - this is totally unrelated to your flower post (flowers are beautiful!) . . . but I remember reading in one of your earlier posts that you make vegetarian meatballs. My little brother is in college and he and his girlfriend just became vegetarians, and I’d love to make them some meatballs! Could I have your recipe? Thanks and happy wedding planning!

i LOVE the look! the black sand against the blue water with that shock of color from the florals..amazing! it would look like a diy-but-looks oh so professional-kinda job!

we did alternating low square and high cylindrical vases w/orchids submerged (cymbidiums for the low square, red mokaras for the tall ones). river rocks were scattered in between for more texture.

can’t wait to see your creations!
