I Hate Perfume.

October 1st, 2008 @ 3:21 pm by Miss Taffy

Are you one of those girls that can’t stand floral inspired perfume? Would you prefer to smell like old books from a library or burning leaves? How about smelling like an experience, for example, a day at the beach in 1966? If unusual scents are up your alley, check out I Hate Perfume, an unconventional perfume shop that I stumbled upon during a trip to Brooklyn a few summers ago. I don’t usually wear perfume, and I loved the peculiar, yet romantic scents in this shop.

I think that these would make wonderful, unique bridesmaid gifts. A perfume reminiscent of the season that your wedding is held would be a nice way that the bride or wedding party could bring back the memories in the years to come. I would tell you I am thinking of this myself, but I wouldn’t want to give anything away to my lady friends who may be reading. ;)

I love how Chris (the artist behind CB I Hate Perfume) explains all of the scents.

At the Beach 1966 smells of “wet sand, seashell, driftwood, and a hint of boardwalk”, and makes you smell “as if you’ve been swimming all day in the ocean”.

*swoons*

Just reading about them makes me imagine the experience and the smell. FIT had classes in fragrance design, and I would have loved to have taken one if I wasn’t buried with my fashion design classes.

It really is incredible how much a scent can bring a certain day, season or era back to life within seconds. Sometimes I’ll catch a whiff of a scented lotion that I wore in high school, and all of a sudden I’m sixteen, going to the thrift store, learning to play guitar and driving around in my first car.

He does do custom work—how awesome would it be to give him a list of a few of the flowers from your bouquet and other scents related to your wedding (cake flavor? Who knows.) and have a perfume to bring back the memories? Ok, I have to admit I didn’t get much sleep, and am feeling pretty silly. I suppose you could always choose a perfume that you don’t wear regularly, but I wouldn’t mind smelling like cake. :)

Last night while I was trying to fall asleep, I thought of some unusual wedding-themed names for perfume. I came up with a few—Champagne and Smooshed Cake, Melted Wax and Table Mints, etc. Although this was amusing, it did not help me sleep. :(

Are you planning on wearing a special scent on your wedding day? Is there a certain perfume that takes you back to another time?

Wow…I remember Demeter used to make weird scents like freshly cut grass and stuff like that when I was a teen. I was always curious to try that stuff out.

I think I’m wearing Lovely by SJP…it’s the only scent that makes FI say I smell good LOL and not “That smells too strong!”

I was just looking at this sight last week! I think I might have read somewhere that he is one of the guys behind Demeter. I have a bunch of Demeters and people always compliment me on them!
I’m a bit of a perfume freak though and have many bottles of different scents all in a temperature controlled area.
For me whenever I smell Farenhuit (spelling) which was my first “real” perfume in grade 7 even though it was made for men I loved it and smelling it now brings me waaay back to those first days of falling in love with scent.

I did not wear perfume on my wedding day and was perfectly happy with it. I had originally planned on wearing my favorite honeysuckle scent, but I don’t often wear perfume in my ‘real life’ so I just forgot to put it on. It would be neat to have a scent that helps me remember that day, it would include:
snow
roses
crisp clean clothes
lotion
church at evening
buttercream icing

I love the perfume oils from Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, just the descriptions are devine. I will probably wear the Bordello oil on our wedding day, as I wore it on our first date. :)

I wore “Sugar” from Fresh — the scent that I always where and Mr. Onion loves. He wanted to recognize my perfume on our wedding day.

Where in Brooklyn is this shop? I looked on their website and couldn’t find a location — I’d love to check it out in person until they invent a scratch and sniff computer screen!

My fiance actually got me the “In the Library” (old books) scented perfume for my birthday shortly before we got engaged. I plan to wear it at our wedding.. we both love it. It really does smell like a library.

I want the burning leaves one, too. I Hate Perfume is spectacular.

I always wear Bvlgari Omnia. It’s a lovely, spicy smell (mandarin, saffron, tea, and white chocolate). I also can’t stand most floral scented things - although I love flowers, and have a wonderful garden, most floral scents just smell chemically and soap-like to me. I will have to check these out - they sound like lots of fun!

Once I read what Princess Grace Kelly wore on her day I knew I had it have it. That said, I’ll be wearing Creed Fleurissimo.

I made the BIG purchase nearly 2 months ago because I wanted to start wearing it so in the future the scent would take me back. It smells so light and fresh, I LOVE IT!

As far as scents that take me back…try not to laugh too, too hard here…the scent of Glade’s Country Garden takes me back to early high school.

If I smell it today it almost makes me sad cause it reminds me of the music listened to and people I hung out with. Some of which have passed.

Zee says:

@Miss Taffy: I wholeheartedly recommend them. When I wear it, my fiance will continually cross the room (or the house, as the case may be) just to sniff my neck and wrists. Yeah. It’s awesome.
