To Veil or Not to Veil

October 1st, 2008 @ 1:54 pm by Miss Spring Roll

My gown is purchased and my wedding day hairdo is selected, but the most difficult decision has yet to be made: to veil or not to veil. I’ve always assumed that I would wear a long veil on my wedding day. However, with so many amazing hairpiece choices, my assumption went right out the window. Deciding on which hairpiece to wear has been a difficult decision that I have been faced with. Choosing a venue? Easy. Picking out a dress? Not too hard. Deciding on a hairpiece? Impossible.

I am torn between so many options:

Will you be wearing a veil on your wedding day?  For those of you going without, will you be wearing an alternative headpiece?

I absolutely love the flowers and feathers. I’m wearing my hair half-up, so I didn’t think flowers would work, but I did buy a comb with feathers and pearls that I’m super excited about.

I was iffy about a veil too, until the bridal shop assistance put the perfect one on my head. The veil actually convinced me to buy the dress. But I really love the look of large flower blooms!

I decided to wear a veil during the ceremony, then take it out and add a floral hairpin for the reception. I get the best of both worlds, and its changes my look for the party!

I was unsure too until I put one on.. that’s when I felt very “bride-y”, but I think the look of the flowers is amazing and very romantic! Your dress is gorgeous and with your hair I think you could pull off the flowers perfectly!!

The flower in the second pic would look awesome on you, but I know what you mean. I was soooo against wearing a veil because it is so traditional, but I ended up buying a mantilla veil - how traditional is that!!!??? LOL!

I was also unsure, but wearing a veil was the best decision. I love the lace veil you show above. Wearing a veil definitely made me feel like a bride!

DO BOTH!! I’m a flower hairpiece and a veil.. best of both worlds!

I love the idea of both- I think that’s what I’m going for. By the way– I love the hairstyle you’ve chosen– I’ve had such a hard time finding pics to look through to see what I like– where did you find yours???

Nevermind!! Just saw the “source” link– thanks!!

Your dress is so beautiful that adding a veil would only make it that much more stunning. I am partial to the mantilla, but I think the birdcage veil would really suit your personality.

I LOVED my veil - I really felt like it just brought the whole bridal look together. With that said, it was a relatively simple piece and went well with my (pretty extravagant for me) gown. I think it’s really just a matter of trying a few things and seeing what works best for you. :) I wore mine low on my head (my hair was piled low… hard to explain (pics are on my blog under “wedding story” if you want to see).

It might also be cool to do a veil for the ceremony and a separate piece for the reception to mix it up.

I’m rocking a long veil for the ceremony & either flowers or a birdcage or both for the reception…I’ve cut back in so many other areas, and I would make them all myself, so I don’t feel TOO guilty about my style indulgence. ;)

I don’t think I’ll wear a veil (FI doesn’t like them and I’m not crazy about them either.) I think if I were to choose one for myself, I’d do a birdcage and actually I think a birdcage would suit you perfectly as well. You’ll never know til you try!

both. my updo had two flowery crystal pins in it that sparkled like crazy after i had removed my elbow-length veil for the reception. (i wasn’t a blusher veil kind of girl). i do enjoy the look of the birdcage pieces, though only if you really feel comfortable about it.

I love love love #2 and #3. I am a “NO VEILER” myself. I bought 2 veils and hated them both…I realized veils weren’t for me. I’m doing a flower peice sort of like #2. :)

Good luck! You are in the most exciting parts of the planning! I have 10 days to go!

I am still debating, but I think I’m going to do a long veil and then ditch it for a birdcage or flowery thing at the reception. I love veils, but don’t want to deal with it all night!

Whatever you decide, I’m sure you will look stunning! :)

Lillindy says:

Why don’t you wear a veil, like the mantilla for example, for the ceremony. Then, for the reception a birdcage that has a little flower/feather action? Then you kinda get the best of all the worlds.

ErinMarieMack says:

You could always be like Mrs. Cookie and be a 2 veil bride:) I chose to wear one because I will never have another chance to, though I can see both ways having appeal for different reasons.

Wolff2be says:

I love the birdcage veil, a girlfriend of mine wore one (but only during the reception). I think for the hairstyle you’re choosing I would go with the flower!

@Lillindy: Thanks for the links :) I am definitely considering being a two veil bride

I didn’t wear a veil on my wedding day. In fact, I was pretty set on having a flower in my hair since even before I was engaged! Many people tried to convince me to wear a veil (they do have a point ~ at what other time in your life can you wear a veil??), but I just had to be true to my style and vision.

Here are some links to pictures of my fake gardenia flower (bought on Etsy):
