Mini Mock Up—I Need Your Help!

October 2nd, 2008 @ 11:02 am by Mrs. Champagne

Unlike many of the bees, I’m fairly behind schedule with our invitations. I saw Miss Dumpling’s RSVP cards and gasped when I saw the February 1st deadline. Our wedding is IN February- I need to get on it!! Sure I’ve searched pocketfold invites that I like, and I’ve even stocked up on my Gocco ink, bulbs and screens, but when it comes to the actual design.. I’m kind of clueless.

So this weekend I decided to start with the basics- the paper. I went to Creative Parties, a local store right around the corner and I got some stardream paper. Using this and some cardstock I ordered months ago from Paper and More, I put together the world’s smallest invitation (during which I decided that I probably would not be making my own pocket folds). There are two problems- 1. I think there may be too much gold in my mini mock-up, and 2. I can’t get another design out of my head!

We’ll start with my mini mock-up. Here’s the front panel where I was thinking we would have our names. I thought about incorporating a black panel behind the gold to offset the gold from the ribbon. I also thought about Goccoing a damask pattern on the gold with white ink to spruce things up.

I’m not quite sure if I’ll tie the ribbon in the front instead of having it wrap all the way around, but that’s a detail for another day.

I used some damask vellum paper to line the pocket fold. It takes away from the gold-ness, which I like.

Ok, so I need your honest opinion- too gold??

Onto my next issue- the invite design I can’t forget. It incorporates all that I would love our invites to have- gold, damask-like print, and a unique feel.

Custom wedding invite from Carciofi Design

I love the mini gold frame, and I figured if I could find it somewhere, I could probably use a similar design. Trying to find a frame like this isn’t easy! I found a similar metal design online, but they are sold out!!

(source)

I called Cariofi Design this morning to see if I could purchase just the frame, and I wasn’t surprised to hear that the cost would be around $2.50 per frame.

Help, hive!!! I’m so torn between two completely different designs. Have you seen any mini frames that would work? I’m at a stand still in the design process and I need to get movin’! Any input would help.

One suggestion would be to switch the snazzy gold frame in the second invitation with the regular gold “frame” in the first invitation (ie. the rectangle on the front where you were wanting to put your name).
I think that will help you have the best of both worlds.
Good luck! :)

I’m liking the gold–maybe to get the “frame” effect, you could make the backing behind the little box for your names a different, swirly punch out shape? It would give it the fancy feel, but you could still use gold or black paper and have the shape of the frame without the cost. I think they’re off to a great start though, good luck!

I don’t have any help for you other than to say that the blue and khaki custom design is gorgeous!! I like where you’re going with yours - they’ll look great with the frame.

I don’t think it is too much gold at all, I cant wait to see how they progress! I think it would be cool to do what missbean and aut say, just cut something out, ooh that would be really cool.

Another thought for the frame - you could do a single panel on the front and gocco a frame design in metallic gold on it. Then do a second run with a different color for your names. It would still be square though. not sure that works…

Don’t worry–you aren’t behind, they’re just ahead! Your wedding is 4 or 5 months away and that is plenty of time. We made our own invitations too. Our wedding is November 1 and we didn’t even start on the invites until June, and then we didn’t work on them at all in July and just finished them up and sent them out in August. It was fine and we weren’t even stressed about it. You’ll be fine too! Plus your designs look great, and I think the gold works with the vellum to balance it, like you said.

I don’t think there is too much gold in the mock up. I also think Aut is on to something with the idea of a punchout to frame the white card with. If you can’t find a puch out that will work, you could also frame your names with a swirly design on the white card. Not quite the same, but it woud add some elegance to the look.

The mock up is great. And it’s super close to the one you like. Paper Source carries a flocked damask paper that’s pretty similar to the one in your model, and you can use that for the front and just get a punch that’s frame shaped (or two rectangular punches of varying sizes) to create a frame from gold stardream cardstock. BTW, you are completely on time! I haven’t even sent out our Save the Dates!

I also don’t think there is too much gold in your mock-up. Also, I really like Aut’s idea of a swirly punch-out shape to get the same effect :)

I think the invitations look great! For the frame, what if you found or made a stamp and embossed it? Or you could ask someone on
http://www.etsy.com/alchemy/ if they can make the frames. Good luck!

OMG that one with the frame is beyond fabulous! But dont break your budget…..I promise you- most of the guests don’t care…..or thats what Papa Dumpling told me last night. They’ll look awesome either way.

I’ve never done anything like this, so I don’t know if it would work… Could you create a frame, like suggested above, but use the thin metal sheets that you can get at hardware stores or craft stores instead of paper? It would kill your hands to punch through this, but it might work… They have “brass” sheets that are meant to replicate gold. I think that you could also make a raised pattern like the one you pictured.

I have seen a lot of cute “frame” stamps, and you could emboss with gold embossing powder for a similar but much more affordable effect

I love the frame idea… how about designing a frame shape, printing it and using gold foil on the paper of the frame shape. Add Mr. and Future Miss Champagne names to the inside of the frame (on white) then using a xyron to print out?

I saw something veeerrry similar to those frames on Etsy today but I can’t remember where…don’t despair, they’re out there!
