Mrs. Ballet Flat, New Orleans Age and Occupation: 24, Geographic Information Systems Analyst Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, IT Analyst Engagement Date: March 16, 2008 Wedding Date: May, 2009 Blogging Since: September 25, 2008 Venue: St. Charles Borromeo Church/Jefferson-Orleans North About Me: I absolutely love wedding planning, spending time with Mr. Ballet Flat, various crafts, watching football, baking, pop music, bargain hunting and ice cream. My idea of a great date night is dinner and clearance shopping with Mr. Ballet Flat! I currently live below sea level in the suburbs near New Orleans, where I make maps all day, everyday for my job. I'm slowly becoming more and more obsessed with anything New Orleans related for our wedding, and I can't wait for the big day!
About Mrs. Ballet Flat

I love looking for a bargain. Being plus sized, I’m always limited in my choices because the market for plus size isn’t as big as it needs to be (pun… sorry)!

Anyway, I love that some plus size stores are starting to show off some bridal styles at non-bridal prices now. The wedding industry is far too expensive, and we brides can use all the help we can get!

Check out these gorgeous styles I found on a couple of popular plus size apparel stores online!

This is a real beauty off of www.torrid.com. It’s on sale right now for $165!!!

Here is another one from www.igigi.com for $275. With the growing trend of those gladiator sandals, a girl could really pull this look off!

If you’re a plus-sized bride, are you going the more budget friendly route for the dress or are you feeling the need to splurge?

So happy to see there is a plus size bride to represent all us more ‘curvy’ brides! Many people don’t realize how hard it is to find a dress that fits and flatters in anything over a size 14. Dress shops-at least the “higher end” stores, don’t carry samples in anything above a 10-I can tell you from experience how humiliating it is to be stuffed into it and ‘pinned’ in the back while the sales person says-oh, it looks great! We’ll just order it in your size (and then charge you another 500 bucks to alter it!!)
Anyhoo-thanks!

OMG - I am loving that 2nd dress!! Instead of looking like its trying to make the model seem smaller, it fits so beautifully that it just enhances the beautiful curves shes got instead of trying to flatten, tuck, or squish them into something thats actually designed for a size 2. SEXY without trashy. Loving it!

There is a store in Atlanta Ga that caters to plus size brides called Silver Lining. I have heard good things about it.

I have found my dress, and I can’t wait to show it to the hive! I promise I will soon!

I need to get Mr. Ballet Flat to promise that he won’t venture onto this website and ruin it for the big day! :)

It seems like in the wedding industry, if you are a size 10, then you’re a 12 or 14 in gowns and that makes you plus sized…so it’s nice to see more options.

I think I did well with Alfred Angelo. Most dresses are under $1000 (mine was about $500), they don’t upcharge large sizes, and they have a ton of bridesmaid dresses that could easily work for brides and would cost even less.

i agree 1000%. the market for fluffy brides in entirely too small. you have to have to have a very thick skin to go dress shopping when you are larger than sample size and the blow to your self esteem can be brutal if you’re feeling unsure of yourself. heck, i thought i was sure of myself until i started dress shopping….little did i know.

can’t wait to see your dress!

I love Torrid’s clothes, and their wedding dresses are so cute. I love their short wedding dress especially. I’m so glad we have another plus size Bee, as I can really relate! :)

I went the budget route- I found some dresses on Final Sale at Lane Bryant and bought a few in different sizes… greedy… maybe… not really. Because their return policy didn’t work. So I ended up selling the dresses that didn’t fit and the one I wore was less than $30. Plus, I bought more than 6 months before my wedding so I had no clue how much weight I was really going to drop before the big day (we all say we want to look great, but you know, I HATE the gym).
I was going to have a family friend custom make me something similar to the Priscilla of Boston eyelet 3056, it didn’t turn out like I imagined… The dress I wore wasn’t “THE” one, but my husband thought I was gorgeous anyhow. And you know what, I don’t know many brides- even/especially plus size ones, that can say they got their wedding dress for $30~

I know everyone says they hate chain stores like davids bridal, but its one of the few places where plus size brides have a BIG selection to choose from. They offer a lot of different styles also. They have a special DB online collection thats not avilable in stores and the cost of the wedding dresses on the site average between $200-$400. Nordstrom.com also has some gorgeous white/ivory formal dresses if you don’t mind having the “traditional” wedding gown. Right now I’m planning on buying my dress from db online, dressing it up with a vintage brooch, and getting a cute lace bolero from ebay. My wedding outfit should come in under $350.

Worried about the mister peaking you say?? I think you should email us all your dress and be done with it, hehe.

Okay so, I went to Davids Bridal and didn’t like the $100 upcharge for a plus size. I mean, if the sizes were true sizes and didn’t run so small I wouldn’t need a plus size in the first place but I digress.
I drew inspiration from DB, then when to a small boutique and found “the one.” To make a long, sad story short and happy; my completely no tech knowing anything 70 year-old mother says, “since you have all the information, can’t you look for that dress online?”

And there it was. DiscountBridal.com had the dress for about a third of that in the boutique. They had amazing customer service every step of the way. I HIGHLY recommend them!

Now it seems I’ve lost so much weight I’m going to need chicken cutlettes (spelling). Who woulda thunk!?
