A Very “Pink” Wedding

October 3rd, 2008 @ 2:55 pm by Miss Dumpling

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! You might be thinking, “What does that have to do with weddings?” Well, nothing and a lot at the same time. Does that even make sense?

My eyes were opened to breast cancer awareness when I was 14 and found a few lumps in my breasts. It was nothing, I had surgery, they were removed and I was fine. Same thing happened when I was 18. I started to wonder why this happened to me, and how it could have affected both me and my family if the lumps turned out to be cancerous. Luckily, I haven’t had to deal with that yet, but there are many brides out there who have.

The The Pink Envelope Project is an organization that encourages women to put together parties and events to raise money for breast cancer awareness. They also started the Pink Envelope Bridal Shower, where brides can send out a pink envelope, along with their bridal shower invitations, to each guest and ask for a donation towards breast cancer research. If you take pictures of your shower, they will even feature you on their site! I think this is a great idea, and I will be doing this for my own bridal shower.

Brides Against Breast Cancer provide brides-to-be with an opportunity to find their dream gown (at an incredible savings), while making wishes and dreams come true for women and men who are losing their fight against breast cancer. Selling your gown after the wedding is very popular. I’m not a sentimental person, so I had originally planned on putting it up for auction on eBay. However, after learning about BABC on Miss Pinot Noir’s blog, I knew this was something I wanted to do. If you want to donate your gown, click here.

And finally, I wanted to leave you with a few photos of some very important ladies who have battled breast cancer. It doesn’t just affect us regular folks!

Great Post! :)

We are leaning toward donations instead of favors for the shower & wedding, but haven’t chosen a cause yet.

I purchased my dress from BABC. I was so excited to know that I could have a beautiful, affordable dress, and the money I spent would go towards a good cause. Plus being an eco-friendly choice.

Awesome post!

We sent a donation to a breast cancer charity to a shower I helped organize. We gave out pink ribbon pins (www.pinmart.com has the best price) stuck to a card explaining where the donation went and what it supported. Everyone wore the pins during the shower. It was great!

My bridal party, my mom (a survivor) and some other guests and family and I will be doing the Susan G. Komen run/walk the morning of my wedding.

We’re going to donate to either the Breast Cancer or Lung Cancer Society in lieu of favors. I have multiple friends and family members that have been affected by these diseases. And favors get eaten or thrown away eventually. When I see the awesome favors that are out there I am tempted to go with real favors, but in the end I want my ‘favors’ to last. And to some good.

Most recently there is also Christina Applegate…it can definitely happen at any age that’s for sure.

…and I wish I knew about the envelope before my shower and my recent wedding, I know for sure my family would have been so happy to participate.

I also bought my dress at a BABC event. It was something I felt I could do to contribute to the cause, while saving money on my dream gown. My grandmother died from breast cancer, I had an aunt battle it, and my mother has had some scares. The more money towards research the better!
Another celebrity to mention is Christina Applegate who recently had a scare and had both of her breasts removed as a precaution. Just wanted to add- and thanks for this post!

I didn’t know about the pink envelopes for the shower, but I LOVE the idea. I’m definitely going to do that :)
My Grandmother had Breast Cancer, she passed when I was in high school, but I think it would be a great way to honor her memory.

@Sarah: You get two virtual hugs (O) (O). Your mom will be there with you, don’t worry=) When you’re getting ready on your big day, she’ll be the one making sure you feel calm, cool and collected. When you walk down the aisle, she’ll be holding your hand. When you’re taking pictures, she’ll be making sure the wind blows in the right direction and the sunlight is the perfect to reveal your most beautiful features. When you dance your first dance, she’ll be there on the sidelines with everyone else, watching you with so much joy love. When you cut the cake, she’ll be there taking a million pictures and yelling at you to SMUSH IT! When it’s time to leave, she’ll be there making sure you remember to personally thank each and every guest for coming. And finally, when you and your husband set out on your new life together, she will be there thinking of how proud she is of her beautiful daughter. I know this to be true. I’ll be thinking of you, Sarah.

I am very excited to hear that someone other than me is giving something back during their wedding. I toyed with the idea of a BC related favor, but then opted to go with something a little closer to my heart. I am a bookworm. I am going on my 6th year working in a library and I think that children’s literacy programs are the most important thing to a child’s development. My favors are homemade bookmarks telling my guests that a donation has been made in their name to Room to read. Please check out their website if you would like to know more. http://www.roomtoread.com Way to go Miss Dumpling!!

Breast Cancer was something that was part of my wedding. Both my mom and grandmother had breast cancer. My grandma wasnt lucky though… she didnt make it.

I find it important to highlight some important causes in moments of gathering. I know everyone was touched at our wedding. Even though I didnt get married in October… Breast Cancer awareness is present always… :)

Sarah says:

We asked for contributions to the American Cancer Society (my family) and the American Diabetes Association (his family) in lieu of gifts. It just made sense.

Caroline says:

I added a wedding favors link for you dedicated to pink awareness. They’re called “Favors For A Cure”.

Thank you for posting about BABC! In Seattle a bunch of wedding vendors (me included) have gotten together and are throwing a big fundraiser for BABC. You can read more about it here: http://www.gethitchedgivehope.com/

Basically we convinced a ton of wedding vendors to donate stuff and services to a big silent auction. Brides are gong to bid on things they need for their weddings (flowers, photography, etc) and the money they spend goes straight to BABC. Very cool and something I hope catches on in other cities…
