I Hate Labels!

October 3rd, 2008 @ 1:57 pm by Mrs. Hydrangea

The Avery Labels that I chose to use for our cigar bags, that is.

(The final product)

Our cigar roller provided us with the labels for the actual cigars but, since our guests had to take them home (they couldn’t smoke in the hotel), he provided us with baggies and I chose to make the labels for the bags.

I figured I would just purchase some 1″ round labels at the local office supply store and then use their template to make a quick and simple label. I was wrong. The template that Avery provided did not match up when I printed it out. No matter how much I adjusted everything, it just wasn’t working.

Finally, I traced the label with a black marker, scanned it, opened it up in Illustrator and traced the image in a new layer. I added the design that I wanted and then printed it out from there. I couple of minor adjustments had to be made, and they never ended up perfectly centered, but the end result was much better then I had when doing the labels in Word.

What was your best success when it came to round labels?

We use Avery labels at work, and the templates never line up. After all these years, I’ve manipulated the template enough so it prints okay. But I have to have one template for each printer…. So weird. And annoying.

I think what you did looks lovely. I like how you’re using the same design on everything.

awh they are so cute! Great job, round labels are defintely hard. Is it possible that you share your template with the rest of us? ;)

I got free samples from online labels.com and used their software to print, though I did have problems with the round ones, too.

I gave up on templates and went with the plain sheets and bought a 2″ hole punch (I needed bigger tags)

I used Paper Source’s 2″ labels and templates for our favors, and they didn’t line up either. (So glad to hear it wasn’t just me.) Of course, I didn’t realize how bad they looked until I had printed 220 of them.

they never line up… my suggestion print it on regular paper… then put it over to see if it lines up.. or vellum if your printer can take it. i have the same experience as mrs. x. i think it’s the way the printers are… each one is adjusted differently. unfortunetly.. no two are the same.

We made them on the computer and punched them out with a 1.5″ puncher and then ran them thru a xyron machine. My Aunt had the big one, so we were able to put 6 across.

I’m sorry it was so much work, but they look great!

We did well with the Paper Source labels… it might just depend on your printer. PS also has 1.25″ labels now.

@Miss Lemonade: They lined up well for the top two rows, but not for the bottom two rows. I ended up reprinting some labels by only printing two rows at a time (printed two rows of labels, then flipped the page and sent it through the printer again to print on the other two rows). That seemed to work much better, but I had to hand feed each page.

I think Miss Peacock is right, it will probably depend some on your printer. (I have a Canon i860 which is about 5 years old.) Good luck!

I liked that those exact Avery labels are on 4×6 sheets, so my printer thinks it’s photo paper. Hey, it worked! The design we were printing wasn’t overtly circular, so there was no way to tell if it was off-center.
