Dressing the Beach Boys

October 6th, 2008 @ 2:45 pm by Mrs. Sea Breeze

When it came to outfitting our bridal party, I knew from almost the very beginning that they would be wearing purple.

Although I did consider the non-matchy-matchy look which is gaining popularity, I soon realized that because we’re having a destination wedding, the bridal party’s outfits are one of the few places where we can establish our purple theme.

Figuring out what the girls would wear was pretty much a no-brainer - purple dresses (even though finding them wasn’t).

But when it came to the guys, I was stumped. The issue at hand was complicated enough - how to pull off a purple-ish look that wouldn’t look cheesy - but then factor in the fact we’re in a beach-type setting and you’ve pretty much got Mission Impossible.

So I turned to other beachy weddings for inspiration.

Although in the beginning, Mr Breezy had been advocating short sleeved shirts and shorts, I wasn’t able to find too much evidence that this was a common thing, except for these:

After much browsing, it soon became apparent that the majority of the wedding parties had gone with a similar theme: white shirts and light khaki/tan pants:

For a lot of these pictures, it was only by proximity to the bride that I was able to determine the groom (which of course wouldn’t be an issue to any of the guests at the wedding, which is what counts of course).

But that made me go hmmmm… and prompted me to search for grooms who were somehow differentiated from the groomsmen.

Some achieved this by wearing suit jackets…

… and some by opting for a different colored shirt…

…and some by doing both different colored shirt and jacket:

There were even a couple photos I found where the grooms wore all white:

And this wedding party wore kilts on the beach!

And finally, although in most of the photos, the bridesmaids matched the groomsmen color-wise, there was one wedding party who chose contrasting colors instead:

As you can see, there were SO MANY CHOICES to be made! Short sleeves or long sleeves? Light colored pants or dark colored pants? Groom with same colored shirt? Groom with different colored shirt? Tie or no tie? Jacket or no jacket? Shoes or sandals?

Obviously I want Mr Breezy and his entourage to be as comfortable as possible. At the same time, I’d like a slightly dressier look since my own dress is so bride-y.

What to do, what to do?

If you are a beach wedding bride, how will/did you dress your beach boys?

I like the idea of the groom wearing a suit, even if the groom’s men aren’t, and I just love khaki suits :)

I second Allicherri1. The khaki suit for the groom and khaki pants for the groomsmen combo is really lovely. I’m not so sure I’m loving the shorts though . . . . A lot of hairy legs on the beach! LOL.

My MOH is having a beach wedding and the groomsmen are wearing peach shirts (matching the maids) no ties and no jacket. The groom is wearing an ivory shirt (matching bride) and a peach tie (no jacket). All of the guys are wearing matching khaki(ish) pants.

Our groomsmen are wearing yellowish-khaki linen pants and white linen guayaberas (AKA Mexican/Cuban wedding shirts), and the groom will be wearing a light-colored suit. The bridesmaids are wearing light green.

I am a beach bride, but with a special case… its a military wedding. So my fiance, the best man, and 1 of the groomsmen will all be in their dress whites. Contrary to popular belief, the dress whites are equivocal to a civilian SUIT not a tux. Well, most all white rentals look like they are going to prom… or a puff daddy function. Most of the groomsmen are yankees and wont actually need a white (or even off white) suit ever again… so we went with a light khaki suit for the civilian groomsmen. Ya know how you pointed out that if they matched you couldn’t tell the groom apart? Well, thats going to have to be our wedding too since 3 of them are in uniform and those can’t really be made too unique (other than ribbons and rank.)

i am a beach bride (whooo!) and upon deciding that, this was one of the first things fiance wanted to talk about (weird, eh?). he is very traditional, a tux man, if you will. he hated the idea of not wearing a tie, whether we were on the beach or not. SO, they’re wearing ties, which i think i love. our color scheme is shades of pink and green, so the 2 BM’s will both be in pink dresses. the GM will be in their own light colored khaki’s and a pink (tucked-in) shirt with a pink and green tie (which i plan on buying for them - j.crew?). future hubby will have have a khaki suit, white shirt, and the same tie. and the best part - no one’s wearing shoes! shirt and tie with no shoes? heck yeah!

I definitely prefer the khaki pants to the shorts. It makes it slightly more formal and not just “party on the beach”. Plus, I’m going to guess that a lot of guests will be wearing pants too and might be jealous if they could have donned shorts instead. I think the ones where the groom is a little different (jacket, colored shirt, etc.) are the nicest. It well defines who’s who in the wedding party. As you said, I’m sure the guests will know which one is the groom, but it makes it nice for the pictures! :)

Mmm … linen. That’s pretty much all I have to say except, make your guy stand out!

My friend got married in Mexico and we all didn’t wear our shoes even though we all bought new shoes, I think khaki is pretty common but I saw those grey pants and wow I think it really takes the beach wedding attire for men to a new level of sophistication. I think the collared shirts unbuttoned and sleeves rolled up is super hot for men too. I would do that with the purple bm dresses, ohh that would be nice.

I too am a beach DW bride - all of the men (groom included) are wearing linen dress pants in khaki from Banana. I just looked and *GASP* they are now on sale for $29.99!!!! We bought them for $59! Here is the link if anyone is interested: http://www.bananarepublic.com/browse/product.do?searchCID=25789&pid=566369&scid=566369012&vid=-1

Since we are getting married in Mexico, the men are wearing “Mexican Wedding Shirts” or Guayaberas. The groomsmen are wearing short-sleeve black with an ivory embroidery and my soon-to-be husband is wearing long-sleeve white with white embroidery. There is a good, budget friendly site at htt://www.mycubanstore.com

No ties, no jackets, and no shoes! (however they all have flip flops for the reception)

@Miss Hot Cocoa: Ha ha, tell me about it! I’m so glad I talked him out of shorts.

@Flor: @yoginikari: I did see those guayaberas in my research - it’s a nice look!

@Starry-Eyed Barefoot Bride: I think dress whites will look super sharp!

@Vic004: I think you and I have similar tastes… stay tuned for what I actually bought.

Not a beach bride, but am a destination bride. And the groomie has decided to wear white (with a colored shirt). Who says the bride is the only one to wear white on her wedding day. :)

I am a beach bride as well and b/c I am getting my flowers last minute and inorder to keep to my budget I decided to stay versitile and put my girls in cotton gauze black, my grooms men in long sleeve black Guayaberas and my husband in a white one, all the guys are doing the oatmeal colored drawstring pant. The lil boys and girls are in white. I think it will look great with some bright colored flowers/leis.
