My idea of a great date night is dinner and clearance shopping with Mr. Ballet Flat! I currently live below sea level in the suburbs near New Orleans, where I make maps all day, everyday for my job. I'm slowly becoming more and more obsessed with anything New Orleans related for our wedding, and I can't wait for the big day!
About Mrs. Ballet Flat

I Knew You’d Have One of These

October 6th, 2008 @ 10:28 am by Mrs. Ballet Flat

OK, I’ll admit it. I’m Miss Ballet Flat, and I’m in love with organization. Well, I love Mr. Ballet Flat more than organization, just to clarify. When it came to the wedding, I knew I needed a place to put my magazine clippings, possible vendor pamphlets, vendor contracts, wedding ideas, blank forms, coupons (gotta love bridal shows), project mock-ups, future child names, etc. (OK, maybe not child names, but you get the point.) I keep everything to do with our big day (that can fit) in this binder.

A couple of weeks ago, I was talking to my engaged friend, (who is getting married this weekend… YAY!) and she mentioned that she saw these planning binders on Martha Stewart. It made her think of me. I told her that I already had one, mentioning the details of the DIY projects of my dreams, the countdown lists (I think I have one from every bridal magazine in existence), our budget breakdown, and my dream dress. The conversation from then on went something like this…

Miss M: “OMG Miss Ballet Flat, I KNEW you’d have one of these!”
Me: “Of course I do. Is it a bad thing, you think?”
Miss M: “You are just so crafty and usually pretty organized. I could imagine the mounds of glitter glue, sequins and stickers on the binder to make it more, well, YOU.”
Me: **sinks in chair and remembers the days of glitter glue notebook and folder decorating in high school** “No, it’s just a plain black binder, but it has a cute cover!”
**Miss M throws Miss Ballet Flat a weird look**
Me: “Err, you want to go get some Starbucks?” **to save self from embarrassment and jokes of glitter glue days**
Miss M: “OMG, yes!”
(bring up coffee to Miss M and all else goes out the window!)

I still have 15 bottles of glitter glue collecting dust in the living room at my parents’ house. However, as plain as it might seem without the glitter glue, I love this binder. I couldn’t visit with a vendor without it. I remember lugging that binder to the reception venues we looked at, to the small cake bakery where we had to sample cake, to a meeting with our photographer, and to the florist.  That binder is so heavy! I’m sure Mr. Ballet Flat was a little embarrassed, but he has learned to embrace the binder. He actually asked me to bring it to a restaurant so we could show our wedding plans to FMIL Ballet Flat! He wanted the binder out in PUBLIC! :) So, Mr. Ballet Flat has learned to love the wedding binder. I think I should name it now, but that might be going a little too far.

Here is the wedding binder in all its glory. It started out as a planner found in bookstores called Tying the Knot.

Then, right after putting in all my clippings (just magazine clippings), it was beyond full (sorry, I’m wedding obsessed!). So, I upgraded it to this:

As you can see, I just cut the cover off of the original binder, and placed it on a 2″ black binder. I separated all of our purchases for the wedding in a different notebook to make sure we’re always within budget, too. As a DIY bride, I find it’s crucial for me to keep records of every purchase we make, and a simple notebook like this has helped so much!

The cool thing about the original organizer was that the category separators were also plastic folders, so I could keep clippings, contracts, and more in there. If you run out of room, sheet protectors are a great thing to use (I did)! :)

There are cons to the Tying the Knot binder, though. The binder is 1″ thick, so if you want to put a lot of things in there, you will have to rig a new one, or just make your own binder if you’d like. Also, the categories don’t have tabs that stick out, so I used some cardstock samples I had to make tabs.

So hive, how do you keep your wedding stuff organized? Also, are you as excited about organization as I am? I hope I’m not the only one here…

Some of my bridesmaids have been making fun of my crazy binder, but they will be happy when I can give them information right away! ;) Meanwhile, I will stuff it to my hearts content. :)

I WISH I could be as organized as you!
I swear as much as we all complain hot there isn’t really a wedding binder out there that encompasses everything we need, we should make our own and mass produce it!

Miss ballet flat (my teal inspiration bride =P), i meant to ask you on an earlier post… are you doing teal linens? if so, where in the world did you find them!? we’re doing black and white, but i wanted a few teal table linens for special tables.

I have a wedding organizer and am obsessed that everything stays organized. I love looking at mags, getting contracts and filing things away. More important, you know where everything is when you need it. I love your organizer!

I am not much of an organized person, but I am always anxious to try! So I got a wedding planning binder that contained alot of info I wanted… but I hated the cover. Hello decoupage! :-) SO yea, now I love putting stuff in it! As things get accomplished its slowly transforming from planner to scrapbook… interesting and unexpected after effects of getting things accomplished!

I love your binder! I ended up making my own using a kiwi green binder from Target, and a variety of wedding checklists and planning sheets I found online. Add some notebook paper and my binder was complete!

It seems that this kind of thing is very personal - what one bride needs/wants in a binder can be completely different from another bride. I couldn’t find one I loved so I made my own. My MOH got hers online and loved it :)

I just used a baby blue, plastic accordion expandable folder. There were about a dozen tabs which I labeled for each vendor/area. I was able to keep contracts, notes, clippings and anything else I needed right there. Between that and a flash drive I used for electronic documents I could set up wedding shop practically anywhere!

uh, not to worry miss ballet flat, i have a binder and i’m not engaged yet. though the bf knows of its existence [and also it's close cousin, the apartment decor binder] and refers to it as well. but i’m a total organization/planning freak so it was to be expected actually. lol.

I have that very same binder, Miss Ballet Flat! Isn’t it so adorable? Though I also had a hard time fitting everything inside, so this is a good idea!

I’d like to note that so far, we share the same wedding month, binder and favorite shoe! Can’t wait to follow your wedding planning adventures :)

@Miss Taffy: I’m totally passing my wedding binder to one of my BM’s after my wedding too. She shares the same organization ideals as me, so I’m excited to pass it on too!
@Nada: I’m glad to see another color twin :). My reception hall includes white linens already, so I’m not really going to worry about linens. I’m really sorry! However, I can tell you that there are teal cocktail napkins out there (at party stores) and it’s a real teal color too!
@Starry-Eyed Barefoot Bride: That is so cool that you’re making a scrapbook. I plan on doing that too :).
@Megan&@Hazel: :) Great minds think alike eh? ;)

Not only doI have a wedding binder, I actually have two wedding stuff milk crates! They keep all of the “stuff” from vendors (in tabbed, labeled folders) even if we don’t plan to use them, as well as all of the magazines. Because hey, who knows when you might need MORE inspiration?

When my FI proposed to me, he presented me with another present. It was big and heavy and square. I opened it and there it was…in all of it’s wedding glory: a HUGE wedding planning binder. He knows me all too well. I’m still in the early planning phases, but I know it will come in handy very soon.
