About Mrs. Eggplant

The one project I unfortunately didn’t get many photos of on W-Day, was our ribbon board with our decorated place cards. I say unfortunately, because this baby took hours upon hours of grueling labor. We finished the project the night before our wedding rehearsal!

To make the board and cards, I needed the following materials:

  • Martha Stewart border punch and EK Success flower punch
  • Many spools of pink, green, white, and brown ribbon
  • Six foam boards (to make three ribbon boards)
  • Sewing pins
  • Place cards from Paper Source
  • Metal brads

First, the ribbon boards. My cousin came up with the idea to take a piece of foam board, layer the colored ribbon across it, and use pins on the backside to keep the strands in place. It worked out well. I also think a staple gun would’ve done the trick.

Once we covered the entire board with ribbon, we took a second piece of foam board and pinned it to the back to cover up the unsightly ribbon ends. When pinning the board in place, we shoved the pins in place at varying angles. This kept the second board from slipping off.

If you’re interested in creating a ribbon board for your wedding, I recently found this link with simple instructions on making one.

And here’s a shot of the completed ribbon boards.

Next, the placecards. These were very easy, but very time consuming. To make the cards, I typed out our guests’ names in a template I created in Adobe InDesign, and hand fed the cards one-by-one through my printer. Unfortunately, the printer kept eating our cards when I tried to let the unit feed automatically, so I had no other option than to hand feed.

After printing, I used my Martha Stewart border punch on the bottom edges of the card stock. Then, I adhered a small strip of ribbon and a colored flower with a brad. The flower colors were based on the guest’s meal choice. Green = vegetarian, dark pink = beef, light pink = chicken.

That’s a great idea! The cards looked beautiful. I wonder if tape would work just as well to hold the ribbons on the other side?

What kind of adhesive did you use to stick the ribbons onto the place cards? I’ve always had a hard time trying to glue ribbon down :( Your cards look great!

I helped my BM create these for her wedding and they took forever and we didn’t do anything that cute with the cards!

I did a very similiar and less time consuming board for my wedding. Basically I covered a corkboard in fabric and then ran ribbon across it just where the place cards were hanging. It wasn’t nearly as colorful as all ribbon, but still simple and easy!

Gorgeous!! Would you mind sharing your template? I have very similar place cards to print out and have no clue how to do it.

Those are beauuutiful! I’m wondering the same thing as NSTAR though — what did you use to attach the ribbons to the placecards?

Thanks everyone!

@motwani: The border punch is from Michaels! I think you can also find it at Walmart too.

@NSTAR & @ChrissyM: I used tape adhesive, the kind that is in a dispenser like white out tape. I had to scotch tape the ribbon ends behind, which was a little unsightly, but no one really cared. :-)

@Tiki: I deleted the template that I used! But, I basically, created a document in InDesign that was sized exactly the same size as my unfolded place cards (3.5″x5″). Then, I typed out a sample name and did some test runs on scratch paper until I got the placement right. I’m sorry I can’t be of more help on this one! :-(

I did this, too, for our wedding — I think I was inspired by Mrs. Pumpkin (?). I used a stapler to hold the ribbon in place and then used little envelopes with seating cards in them and cards with the instructions (from Mrs. Lemon) to upload photos. I used fabric to line the board, too, before putting any ribbon on so that it would provide a nicer background and there wouldn’t be any white spaces. Also, I think the key to making the boards look good is that the thicker the ribbon, the better it will look. Too thin of ribbon makes it look too busy from far away.
