Not So Buff Bride

October 6th, 2008 @ 11:59 am by Mrs. Spring Roll

I absolutely love my gown and feel that my body looks nice in the gown. However, I have a few problem areas where I could use some help. The main area, for lack of better word, is arm flab! I not only suffer from arm flab, but armpit butt as well. Armpit butt occurs when my arm is down and the flab creates a butt-like appearance. My back could also use some toning up as well, as it will be a focal point when I’m in my gown.

In an effort to look my best, I purchased a book titled Buff Brides by Sue Fleming for only $3.00 from Amazon.

Don’t let the title fool you.

I’m not looking to become a buff bride, just a toned one. The book has two workout courses: a full 24-week course and a 12-week crash course, with exercises based on targeting your problem areas. Having roughly six months until the big day, I opted for the 24-week course. Here’s hoping for toned arms on our wedding day.

Do you plan to tone up for your wedding? Are you following a specific program?

A friend of mine did this for her wedding and it worked great. She kept the book by her tv and would do the exercises at night while watching the tube…

I did a bootcamp program. It was great! Except that I still have a few month til the wedding and can’t afford to keep it up between here and then. So - we got a wii fit! I’m using it with the pre planned daily sets from Fitness magazine to help keep the tone!

I am actually eating a salad as I have been doing for the last week and have cut out carbs. I already feel the difference. I am also going to join a gym with my FI.

I’m not planning on doing a specific program, but to amp up my yoga routine to tone up, and start doing more cardio-which I hate!

@Starry-Eyed Barefoot Bride: Oooh I’m so jealous, I would love to own a Wii :)

@Eliza: Thanks for sharing, hearing that is has helped other brides keeps me motivated.

@Mrs. Bee: I am glad to hear that and hope I too can be as successful.

I am nervous of having back fat wings and flabby arms for my wedding, which is why I’m easing back into yoga (7 months out), cardio dance, and cutting back calories (www.sparkspeople.com helps track calories for free!). At the 2 month mark, I’ll be doing 2x weekly reformer pilates in addition to my yoga and dance classes. I’m hoping that combo will tone, or at least minimize my flub :)

I’m worried about the same thing… today is day one of the hundred pushup challenge for my fiance and I. I thought it would be good because 1) its free 2) we can do it together and 3) it only takes a few minutes a day. We are going to start with this and hopefully continue with other “mini-goals” for the next 8 months until the wedding.

I’m not planning on ‘toning up’. Over the past few months I can’t believe how many vendors and members of my family have asked me if I’m going to lose weight for the wedding or have suggested that I should… I weigh the same as I did in high school, but it doesn’t seem to matter since there’s this preconceived notion that I should be working towards ‘getting skinny’ or otherwise altering my body for the big day. I’m tempted to drop the next vendor who feels they need to mention it… very frustrating.

While this post is about toning, I think that you would look beautiful in your dress as-is, Miss Spring Roll. It made me sad to see your beautiful dress pictures with these red circles showing ‘imperfections’ - not the case. If you will feel more beautiful in your dress by working on becoming healthier, then by all means do it - but the bride is always the most beautiful one on her wedding day regardless and you will be stunning no matter what.

Good luck Miss SR… I’m having a tough time motivating myself to work on some of my problem areas too. My Mom and Dad got us a Wii Fit as an engagement present, in hopes of keeping us as stress-free as possible. So I set my goal and I’m hoping I can get there. I also do hot yoga, which is “the best workout you can get” according to my fiance who used to play semi-professional soccer! :)

I also think you are being too hard on yourself (I think you look great), but the important thing is that you feel good about yourself.

FI and I are doing a 1/2 marathon in January, but from February until June I plan on using the same program:) I am also on Weight Watchers, which has worked great for me. I have lost/kept off 10 lbs, which was my goal:)

I just finished the 24 week program. My arms are definetely the most toned they have ever been. I also lost a few inches off of my waist. I went down one clothing size. I strictly followed the weight program but slacked quite a bit on the cardio, so I’m sure if you do both together you will see great results. I loved this book and will most likely do it after my wedding. Good luck. Hint, I had the spine cut and spiral bound so it would lay open flat.

@hjo202: Thanks for the tip on spiral bounding the book. I am so happy to hear that this book has really helped others.

Oooh I also looooved the “Wedding Workout” by Women’s Health. I think you can find it if you google it. It’s a video broken into segments (arms, abs, legs, cardio, etc.) that you can pick and choose your program for the day or tell it you want to follow their structured program. It’s fantastic!
