Avocado BM Attire Assault

October 7th, 2008 @ 1:22 pm by Mrs. Avocado

All my bridesmaids, are LDS and so they all dress following the modesty guidelines I discussed once before. Finding a knee-length fancy dress with sleeves for one person is tough. Finding that same dress, for less than $150, in 6 different sizes in just the right color is impossible.

I almost put them in this dress from Target.com, but I seemed to be the only person that liked it. Maybe I just wanted it because I have always wanted to smash the belief that the bride should only wear white into a million pieces. What a silly outdated rule. Is anyone REALLY going to confuse the bridesmaids for the bride? Why would you invite people to your wedding that don’t actually know who you are and would wander around confused about which girl got married that day?

Thus, the Avocado BM Attire Assault was developed. I emailed the girls, explained the situation, wrote them each a check for $100 and put it in the mail. I asked them to find:

A black dress to wear on the wedding day. No silver embellishments. Think fancy cocktail party dress. Look for dresses made with satin, silk, chiffon, etc. It’s going to be hard to find dresses made with jersey, cotton, or polyester that are going to look fancy enough. I’m not looking for the standard “cultural hall reception” dress, I’d like something fabulous! :)
Gold or black and gold shoes. Don’t worry about them matching, none of yours are going to match mine at all, just find something you love and that you know you will wear over and over after the wedding.

I created a Google Notebook (Ms. Dahlia taught me about this once upon a time), and filled it with dress options and sent them the link. I emailed them periodically to check up and see how the hunting was going. I asked MOH Shay call them to check how things were coming along. What a surprise it will be to see what they all end up wearing that day!

Crafty BM Maggie sewed her dress with her mom this morning. I am so curious to find out what they came up with….

BM Beni Bop is going to be hot in her little Calvin Klein number that I purchased off of ebay for her. We don’t really know it if is actually a CK or a reproduction, but she likes it so we decided to keep it! She has some black peep toe heels with a gold spike (Nine West I think?) to go along with the dress.

I have no idea what BM Bree’s dress looks like, but with shoes like this does it really matter? I mean seriously, I kind of want to tell her she has to give them to me…..

BM Princess Jess has three different dresses she is trying to decide between. This little ruffled number makes me swoon (and she already owns it! Score!)

Not to mention her gorgeous heels below.

MOH Shay will be attempting to steal the show in one of the most vivacous dresses I have ever seen her in. Seriously, looking this good at someone else’s wedding should be illegal.

As for what everyone else is wearing (and what some of the above named are wearing for shoes/dresses)….I have no idea. And it feels GOOD! I love my non-matching bridesmaids, and since they picked out their own dresses I would imagine they plan on wearing them over and over again. If not, hey it was free for them!

In what areas have you relinquished control and let someone else pick up the slack? How did you keep tabs on those you deligated responsibilities to?

my bridesmaids were given the options of black and knee length and told to go on their merry way. i had several guests tell me at my wedding (just last weekend) that my bridesmaids looked relaxed and beautiful. letting go of the matchy-matchy bridesmaids worked out in my favor.

we are going with the same concept and I cannot wait to see what everyone chooses. A couple have already work their dresses once or twice, which is super great.

Love the black CK dress and the Betsey Johnson shoes! I think letting them choose their own dress is great idea. But, your girls are so lucky…you even gave them money!? Thats so awesome.

We’re so much alike!

I told the girls b2, berry, chiffon. The rest is up to them. I picked b2 because the dresses were fairly priced and there were at least 10 to pick from short, long, different necklines, waistlines. They are wearing their own shoes, jewelry, and their hair in any style. I want them to look like themselves, not bridal friend clones.

I wanted to do WHITE dresses too. But I don’t think they wanted to wear white.

At least I’m smashing one outdated bridal traditional — I’m not wearing white, I’m in a golden hue.

Haha, I could have written this post! Letting your wedding party pick their own attire is not only easier on everyone, but the results are more flattering and have more personality. It was the best way to go!

My tip: Be clear not only with your expectations (such as your description above), but that they should wear what is comfortable for them. My MOH is a modest dresser by nature and had a hard time finding something, until I realized it was because she thought she had to get something strapless to match my gown. It never occured to me to specify that she should dress like HER not ME. Whew - once we straightend that out, she immediately found a beautiful, perfect dress.

The problem with the Target dress is it looks closer to a swimsuit cover-up rather than “something fabulous.”

It was very kind of you to pay for their dresses and shoes.

My favorite bride was the one, who like you, gave instructions on generally what to find and let us choose from there. Good job!

I was in a wedding 2 years ago where I got to choose my own black tea length dress and I have since worn the dress on 3 other occasions and lent it to a friend for 2 as well :) Best dress EVER!

Every single wedding I’ve been to where the bridesmaids have worn black has ended in divorce. Isn’t that weird?

That Calvin dress is adorable!

I’m LDS too and dressing for weddings is the hardest thing!! I let my bridesmaid/maid-of-honor choose her dress (it was black as well) and it ended up being perfect. I’m all for letting them choose so that they’re comfortable and will wear the dress again.

@sarah: One of my favorite dresses was gold! I came so close to buying it, cause it looked so flattering against my skin.

@Erin: I think people are used to the bride being very particular about things, so when I conveyed over and over to my bridesmaids that I really didn’t care what they wore as long as they loved it they kind of hard a hard time believing me :) Many of them have been very sweet and checked with me about their dresses to find out if they like them. I just want them to be fancy and black. That is the only rule!

@jtg: Yes, it really isn’t that great compared to what they will be wearing now. I was just seeing stars with the $40 price tag!

@Ashley: Yeah that is weird. Good thing I am not superstitious :)

@Tabitha (From Single to Married): I don’t know how other brides do it. Although, I posted about this before, the LDS culture seems to be the only one where the bride pays for the BM’s dresses. Did you do this as well?

I LOVE that last dress (racy for LDS, no? it’s so snug!)!

Do you know who it’s by/where it’s from??

@Mrs. Gueller: It’s from Nordstrom of course! (The Avocado family is obsessed with Nordstrom!)

I believe it is this dress.
