Sharing My Secrets: The Cake

October 7th, 2008 @ 5:05 pm by Mrs. Peacock

When it came to our cake, this is what I had in mind.

In order to achieve this look, I purchased a mold from Decorate the Cake and brought it to our baker. She seemed pretty confident that she could pull it off. She even tested a bit while I waited to see how it would turn out. She planned to use the mold to create the design on each layer by removing sections. Hopefully, this would create a new design on each layer. It didn’t turn out exactly as I was hoping. The layers were quite thick, far from the delicate lace I was hoping for. I didn’t actually realize how poorly this was executed until just this moment, comparing the photos.

Our cake was absolutely saved by our cake topper.

How sweet are those little birds? My aunt made them from her handmade alpaca wool, using alpacas from another aunt and uncle’s farm. She made the hat, just in case you were wondering. All the little pieces were borrowed from other super crafty projects that she had going on around the house. My uncle created the legs out of a strong metal wire, allowing them to nestle perfectly in the top of our cake. They were made with so much care and love, how could they not fix our sad and saggy cake?

I do want to mention that the cake was delicious, even if the design did not live up to Martha’s standards. It was very soft and perfectly sweet.

Is there anything that are you worried might not go according to plan?

The cake is so beautiful, yet so simple. I love the details on each layer. I never was a fan of cake with so much on them. It takes away from the cake.

I think it turned out ok, it is a bit different when you put the images next to each other, but it still looked great! And the handmade toppers are so adorable. :)

Our inspiration cake is in fondant, and we will be doing it with buttercream, so I know the graphics won’t pop as much and it might not look as “clean”. Mr. Taffy and I can’t stand the texture of fondant though, so we are ok with it. :)

Although the actual cake does look different, to me TASTE is the MOST important thing. You can have the most beautiful cake in the world and have it taste like a rock, so I am glad that your cake was sweet to eat! (:

You all are very kind, thank you! The cake wasn’t perfect, but it isn’t bothering me too much. It looks nice in photos :)

@stlaw: I haven’t actually gotten it back from my baker yet. Let me make sure that they don’t want to buy it, and I will email you.

Tabitha (From Single to Married) says:

your cake looks great even if it didn’t perfectly match the picture - I wouldn’t have noticed much difference! I know what you mean about not living up to expectations, our cake showed up and was so different that I thought it was for a different wedding party. Sadly, I realized it was ours. But it tasted great and was still quite lovely!

Maybe I am blind, but what exactly is the difference? I think it looks beautiful…tho the top layer seems to be a bit heavy and sinking in.
