About Mrs. Pineapple

The Sweetest Addition

October 7th, 2008 @ 4:15 pm by Mrs. Pineapple

When I was a very little girl, my parents used to take all of our Easter candy and put it above the freezer so they could ration how much we ate at a time. Well, there was no fooling me. I would sit in front of the freezer with my arms outstretched making sure no one could get to my candy stash.

I never out grew my obsession for sweet treats, and growing up sometimes my mom and I would sneak off to the mall and hit the candy store instead of the food court for lunch. (In case you are wondering, no she didn’t win “Mother of the Year” that year. I am pretty sure with all this wedding help 2008 is going to be her year though.)

Last week Mom Pineapple and I were at the local greasy spoon eating french fries and ice cream for dinner. It was a couple days after my Sweetest Day post, and we were talking about the funny holiday and about Mom and Dad Pineapple being married on Flag Day. I said “if ever there was a excuse to have a candy buffet, Sweetest Day would be it.” Mom Pineapple put down her spoonful of turtle sundae and said “Wait. What is a candy buffet?” Her eyes got huge as I described a table full of colorful candy and what has to be one of the biggest bridal trends in recent years.

Once Mom Pineapple’s wheels started turning, there was no stopping her with talk of giant pixi sticks and a fish bowl full of Swedish fish. Needless to say, once our bowls were clean we headed across the street to the dollar store in search of candy dishes.

Here is the sign for our candy buffet. We bought both this frame and stand from the dollar store. I spray painted the once red frame with metallic copper spray paint. The sign says:”10.18.2008 is Sweetest Day

A holiday celebrated primarily in the Great Lakes region and parts of the northeastern United States, Sweetest Day takes place on the third Saturday of every October. It is an occasion which offers all of us an opportunity to remember not only the sick, aged and orphaned, but also friends, relatives and associates whose helpfulness and kindness we have enjoyed.

To thank you, our friends and family, for joining us on this sweetest of all Sweetest Days we would love for you to enjoy some of our favorite sweets.”

So, I know what you are thinking. “OMG Candy! Also, those are not your ‘wedding colors’ Mrs. Pineapple.” Instead of trying to find candy that matched the decor (which really is only the paper goods at this point…) we picked out our favorite candy of all time. Some of the candies we included are: Giant Pixi Sticks (my mom once asked my dad for a sun roof in her mini van so she could eat them while driving), candy necklaces, ring pops — get it?, bubblegum, giant lollipops, skittles, twizzlers, starbursts, caramel apple pops, sour straws, reese’s, assorted chocolates, taffy, sour straws and little chocolate sports balls.

Mr. Pineapple does not endorse the candy necklaces, saying they remind him of a frat party. Now I didn’t know him when he was in undergrad, but if he means what I think he means, I hope people are eating each other’s necklaces. We bought most of the candy at a candy distributor in Altoona, Pa and most of the glass containers at the dollar store. After all was said and done we spent about $80 on candy and $30 on containers.

I am so excited about the candy table and even though it isn’t as chic as some others, I think it will most definately be a hit. We have an open bar, but really, you’re not going to find me there when all this candy is around!

If you are having a candy buffet, did you chose candy based on color or your favorites? Also, do we get your stamp of approval Mrs. Eggplant?

I did the same thing! I just found our most favorite candy and threw the color scheme out of the window. And people loved it! I’m still getting e-mails about how great our candy buffet was. I’m sure it will be great :) What a cute idea to tie in the Sweetest Day holiday.

I’d love to know the name of your dealer….candy dealer that is. I am thinking about a candy buffet. Or at least some rock candy pops in our colors on the tables.

We definitely picked based on our favorites! Mr. Peacock and I are also candy lovers and we couldn’t imagine not having swedish fish and peanut m&m’s in the bar, regardless of their color.

Also, as played out as candy bars are, they still make everyone happy!! :)

how does one search for candy depots in their state?! $80 is a GREAT price for that much candy.

When you said your Mom asked your Dad for a sunroof so she could eat the giant pixi sticks while drive, I literally LAUGHED OUT LOUD! That is hilarous! :) I think the candy buffet is such a cute idea and I’m sure no one will care if it matched or didn’t match your wedding colors.

Your mom is a woman after my own heart, I love that she asked for a convertible. If you haven’t gotten her a gift you need to find a little chevron style convertible car filled with the regular sized pixie sticks so it looks like the huge ones in proportion. That is just great, I can just imagine your mom’s eyes getting big when you started telling her about a candy buffet. That is just great.

We lucked out, our favorite candies matched our wedding colors! We had sour patch watermelons, frooties, bubblegum, everything was pink and green. I (as well as my guests) loved it. Even though the candy buffet trend is very popular, I still love it and guests seem to as well.

I love the candy buffet idea! Plus, as much as these ideas seem “played out” to us, it’s only because we all live, breathe and eat wedding stuff. No one I know has had a candy buffet, and people I mention it think it’s a great “new” idea! Same goes with the photo booth. Sometimes we just have to take a step back and realize that for most people attending our wedding, these will all be “new” ideas that they’ll love (and never know that you stole from hundreds of other brides!).

Your candy buffet looks amazing! We are getting married on Sweetest Day next year, and I’ve been planning on doing this, but your post got me so much more excited about it! Our colors are red and black, and I’m sure we could find plenty of yummy candies in red-fruit flavors but I think it’d be more fun to just pick our faves!

@tberry: well I thought this was going to be a difficult take for us since we live in the middle of no where, but we lucked out. An hour from us is Blair Candy Co. (http://www.blaircandy.com/). They had a pretty great selection and we also had an excuse to go to the nearby Target. All in all well worth the drive.

@Mrs. Peacock: I think this is a popular trend for a good reason!

@Tosha: I just googled “candy distributor” and our zip code, easy peasy. The candy ranged in price from the taffy being the cheapest to the giant lollipops (which we got at the cracker barrel) being the most expensive per piece.

@Sarah: candy from Blair Candy Co. and all the little containers are from the Dollar Tree and the 3 big ones are from Wal*Mart.

@jennred782: such a good idea!

@LNickle: yeah, I have no doubt this will be brand spanking new for my gramps :)

@sweetestdaybride: @mrshudson: Lucky you two! I probably would have attempted some sort of color coordination 1. if we had more time and 2. if our colors weren’t champagne and copper (there are a few copper wrappers thrown in if you look closely). So, going with our favorites was a good option for us :)

Just be sure you have enough volume. I thought we had more than enough - thought we’d have a ton left over - thought only the kids would enjoy it. Nope. Everyone rushed the candy buffet! 70 year olds were walking out with big stupid grins on their faces while not even being able to tie the twist ties on the bags because they’d filled up so much. Jeez, who knew? I pass the knowledge on… but a ton of it! oh, and if you want any, make sure to make it someone’s job to fill a bag for you at the very beginning or it will be gone. Wish I had done that :(

Miss Pineapple, is ice cream for dinner a Pennsylvania thing?! My late grandmother used to take me for ice cream sundaes for dinner when I visited her in Hershey, PA…and I distinctly remember her once letting me have corn flakes with ice cream for breakfast! Needless to say, I fully endorse your sweet tooth :D

OK So I am still not excited about the candy thing… We are missing the best candy of all and I plan on fixing this problem. WE HAVE NO PEZ! I taught my children at a very young age that it is against the law to eat the PEZ candy without first dropping them into the dispenser. I am hoping that the wedding guests were taught this as well. Just one more thing to worry about…wedding guests eating PEZ without the dispensers! Eating them before dinner…NO PROBLEM!

Hey, Mrs Pineapple!

Thanks for making me feel like I could provide my guests with yummy, yummy candy that are favorites of me and fi and NOT have to colors coordinate with our wedding theme and colors. Bring on the rainbow!

Your display was a true inspiration and the reason I’m providing a candy buffet at my wedding in June!!

I think the colorful buffet is more fun!
Use balloons, strings of curling ribbon, banners, etc. and have fun! I was once at
a wedding where the buffet was ALL GREEN
candy. I love green, but it was very unappealing and how many people want everything in sour apple?!?! Pick you favorites!
