About Miss Ballet Flat

Hi, I’m Miss Ballet Flat, and I’m a tall girl. How tall, you probably wonder? Well, let’s just say my fiance and I have another thing in common…we are both 5′11″. *Crickets chirp*

I would feel really awkward being taller than my fiance on our wedding day. So, I’ve enlisted the help of some great shoes that would suit Mr. Ballet Flat well in this situation…

OK, OK. I’m only kidding! So, what’s a girl to do? Well, I guess I have to keep my height the same here. No high heels for this bride!

I’ve been exploring my options for flat shoes or even super low-heeled shoes. I’d love a low heel so I could still have that sexy feel. (I love how fabulous a COMFORTABLE pair of heels makes me feel!) Thanks to a few websites, my fashion gears are starting to turn! Wahoo!

Check out these beauties…

Of course, if these low heels don’t quite feel right for me, here are some flats I’ve been eyeing. :)

Are you and your fiance the same height, or are you taller than your fiance?  If so, what kind of shoes will you be wearing?

My fiance and I are almost exactly the same height, which means we tower over his parents and sister, who are all close to 5′2″. The fact that heels would make me taller than my FI didn’t really have an impact on my wedding day shoe decision. I made sure he had no problem with me being taller than him on the day if I found heels I liked, and I received his blessing to wear whatever I’d like. Do you ever wear heels with your FI? I know a lot of girls don’t feel comfortable being taller than their signficant other, but I think it’s time everyone became more comfortable with the idea - height shouldn’t matter!

Miss Ballet Flat,

I, too have the same problem. My fiance is only 1.5 inches taller than me and as much as I’d love to wear heels; it might make for an awkward pic moment.

Anyone else agree?

Although,I did find this: http://www.walktallshoes.com/

Anyone ever try it?!?!

Starry-Eyed Barefoot Bride says:

I like the first (girls) pair!
That being said, I’ve been to two weddings where she was taller than he… and no one cared. He let his concern be known to the photog, so all the photos are angled not to accentuate height difference. But everyone who’s there (hopefully) already knows you and wont think twice about your height.

Katharine says:

He’s only a smidge taller than I am, so I am wearing…..BALLET FLATS! As should you! Plus they’re comfy.

Wren315 says:

I feel your pain. I have always been a big fan of the 2-4 ” heels, but my fiance is just 1″ taller than me, so i have been searching for those magicaaly sexy (but still low ) heels too.

willworkforpeonies says:

I am 5′10 with no shoes on. The boy is a mere 5′6. It makes us ‘us’.

Lindsey says:

My husband and I are the same height and I was actually HAPPY I had an excuse to wear flats on my wedding day! I chose these shoes (see link) by Seigerson Morrison.

[Unfortunately, I think a pair of 4-inch stilettos would have been more comfortable! Even after days of breaking in the shoes and excessive band-aid prevention measures, my heels were wrecked by the end of the night.]

missbean says:

I am just slightly shorter than my DH. I went through multiple pairs of flat shoes (ballet flats, flip flops, etc.) but wasn’t really liking any of them. (Some of them didn’t like me, either! Boo on wide feet!). Until about a month before our wedding I was looking for shoes for my mum with her and lo and behold were the cutest patent leather red peep-toe flat sandal complete with rose on top. My mum even bought the pair in white! (We both have wide, high arched short feet, so to find a pair of (CUTE!) shoes that fit was amazing!)

Unfortunately, these shoes are from a Canadian shoe store called Arnold Churgin and only sells shoes in my city. But they do have very pretty, high quality shoes!: http://www.arnoldchurgin.com/

I hear you - I’m 5′11″ as well, and my FH is only about an inch taller. I’m planning to wear ballet slippers for the big day — not flats, mind you, but the super-comfy, decidedly adorable slippers of amateur ballerinas everywhere. Best of luck with your shoe search!

Novbride08 says:

My fiance is only a bit taller than me. I ordered many low heeled shoes and the one that was the most comfy and prettiest was the first picture you posted. I got a different version, but they are super comfy!

Mrs. Lemon says:

I wore “almost” flats. I rarely ever wear heeled shoes, but these were much better than ballet flats or kitten heels.
And I’m pretty sure Mr. Lemon got the tallest shoes at Men’s Warehouse. :)

Stacie says:

I am also toying with the ballet slipper idea. Being taller than my fellow on my wedding day would make me feel big (a total self conciousness issue on my partof course). On the other hand, the fellow in his amazigness has also offered to wear lsubtle lifts if I find a wonderful heeled shoe. Awww….

14.
Em says:

My husband and I are the same height, so I had this same problem for our wedding day. I ended up going with a pair of slippers for our wedding. Think the kind that people some time wear around their houses at night. Were they the most attractive thing? Not a chance! But I didn’t end up being taller than him AND they were so comfortable that I wore them all night and still wear them on occasion!

Laura says:

I’m so happy to see this post! I want to wear flats for my wedding and I’ve been having a terrible time finding cute and comfortable flats. Its seems like there’s hope for me yet!

I’m 5′10″, about half an inch taller than my fiance without shoes on, and adore four inch stilettos, so I’m used to being the taller one in the relationship. The reason I’m looking for flats is because my mother (wonderfuly, lovely woman that she is) is worried that the pictures won’t look good if I’m super tall. We have differing opinions on a lot of things so I gave in on this one–especially because flats will be super comfy and much easier to dance in after being on my feet for hours.

Good luck with the rest of your shoe search!

16.
katherine says:

i have the exact opposite problem! i’m only 5′2″ and my guy is 6′3″…so even with super high heels the pics may turn out weird. and we look strange dancing together bc i’m barley up to his shoulders!

17.
lily1223 says:

I think it’d be perfect for you to wear ballet flats, Miss! A little Weddingbee tribute, yes?

A side note:
My sister’s 5′11- she’s 17 and never gets to wear high heels to her high school dances because she’s taller than everyone.
Thankfully, FI’s brother is 6′4! Needless to say, they are walking down the aisle together as bridesmaid and groomsman and my sister is STOKED to wear heels! :]

Mrs. Corn says:

heh, I wore heels and Mr Corn wore his regular tux shoes…and I was taller than him (since we are both 5′11″ as well). But it didn’t matter.

cannotwait says:

I’m BARELY shorter, and I’m wearing Biviel shoes from piperlime that have 1.5 inch heels…sounds higher than they are, considering he won’t be barefoot! Also, I’m a tiny bit shorter than you, and these are perfect for me with my La Sposa by Pronovias dress…no hemming or add’l length required! If you have to pay for both, it really starts to add up!

20.
Jo says:

Girl, own your height!

My sister is at least 6′ at 18, and she can only get taller from there (and knowing our family, she probably will!). She has always stressed about whether or not to wear heels to the formal dances at her high school, and most of the time her footwear choices come down to how tall her date is. But you know what? She always, without exception, looks completely fierce when she goes for the 4″ heels, even if she is taller than her date, because she feels more confident displaying her height as an asset.

My mom stands a few inches taller than my dad (her 5′11″ vs. his 5′9″), and their wedding photos are absolutely beautiful because she didn’t try to disguise the height discrepancy. It’s one of the things I’ve always admired about them as a couple, that my mother always wore heels despite their respective heights when they went formal.

If you feel more comfortable wearing flats or kitten heels, then by all means, wear flats or kitten heels. But please, for the sake of tall girls everywhere (and us average girls who date shorter men!), don’t make the decision to wear flats simply because you’re nervous that you’ll make your fiance uncomfortable. He loves you and your height, or he wouldn’t be marrying you.

It’s your day to be sexy! Own it, own it, own it!

21.
Abby says:

I’m 5″11′, he’s 5″9′ or 5″10′ (depending on the day — or so he says. ha!) and I’m always taller than him. When we both wear flip flops, it’s barely noticeable, but I will for sure be wearing super cute ballerina slippers on my wedding day. He’ll be wearing normal dress shoes. Will I be taller? Perhaps. Will this be any sort of shock for anyone at our wedding? Nope. Everyone knows I’m taller, but it’s never been a big deal.

I say, look for the most comfortable pair and wear them with confidence. :) I’m glad I’m not the only one in this position!

22.
Bridediy says:

I am 6′1 barefoot and my husband is 5′6 so needless to say it didnt matter what I wore to our wedding in March I was going to be ALOT taller than him. So I figured Heck I might as well get shoes I liked. So I ended up with 2 1/2 peeptoes that I loved.

People asked my husband if it bothered him that I wore heals and his comment was “No if it bothered me that she was taller than me clearly we wouldnt have made it this far. So what if it’s seven inches or nine at the end of the day she is taller than me and I have gotten used to it” :)

Ultimatly it actually made for some cute pictures since there are pictures of me leaning my head down to rest it on top of his during the ceremony that look very intimate. :)

Wear the heals if you man loves you it wont matter one bit!

23.
Bridediy says:

oops sorry I meant to say 2 1/2 inch peep toes that I loved.

Yay for tall brides! I happen to be 6 ft and am actually about an inch taller than my fiancee. I was thinking of going barefoot, so that he would look taller than me. Barefoot could actually fit in well with our outdoor wedding on the river.. If I do wear shoes it’ll probably be a pair of cute sandals or a low open toe heel.

26.
Wolff2be says:

@Lindsey: your shoe picture is the cutest!!

Miss Ballet Flat… I think you should wear what you feel comfortable in. I definitely think flats would be a great wedding day option!

27.
Sarah says:

I’m 6′1″ and my hubby is 6′4″, and for our wedding I wore the first shoes you pictured, the Andie. They were very comfy, lasted all night, and I was still shorter than him.

28.
Mary says:

I am also 5′ 11″, and my FI is about 6′ 1″… ish. I adoooooooore 4″ stilettos, and personally feel no remorse about having some gorgeous high heels. I will probably purchase an inexpensive pair of dressy sandals to wear for some of the couple pictures and pictures in grass that would normally ruin my heels anyways. If you are still looking, I am from AZ, and I must TOTALLY recommend you to the wedding accessory superstore! They have the best deals on possibly every non-wedding-dress item on earth. They have sales on different things every weekend, and even mail out coupons if you’re on the mailing list.

He thinks we’re the same height, but I know that I’m a bit taller (5′11″ also!). I didn’t want to be uncomfortable and also am getting married on the beach, so I got some gorgeous red sandals. This is the pair, but mine are bright red. I have been fighting the urge to wear them before the wedding!!

There are lots of super cute bright or metallic flats. I personally don’t love white flats, so I went for something a little different and am really happy.

chaikac says:

I got that first pair from zappos. I love them! We’re about the same height, so I didn’t want anything too high (and even if I wasn’t I can’t walk in heels)

31.
tberry says:

I’m sorry I can’t commiserate. I not quite 5 feet and my FI is 5′10 1/2″ I have the opposite problem. I look like a midget next to him but with my small, very wide feet it is hard to find shoes that increas my height very much and are still comfortable.

32.
Jasmine says:

I’m 5′10 and my Fiancee is 6ft ( I think he’s adding an inch but I’ll let it slide) . I bought a pair of shoes that were 2inches and if I’m taller I DON’t care. 2 inches is a far cry from the 4 inch heels I usually wear.

33.
Angiepie28 says:

YES! Another tall bride! Love.it.

My fiance is a bit taller than I am, but I’m still towering over all of my bridesmaids (I’m 5′10″ and my MOH is 5′2″). I’ll probably be sporting one inch heels.

34.
Anna says:

I own that first pair of shoes in black! I had the same problem as you - my fiance is only about an inch taller than me, and I wanted a pair of cute, comfortable shoes that wouldn’t make me tower over him. If you are undecided about which to get, I would recommend those first ones. I love them and am wearing them at my wedding in 11 days! Good luck!

35.
Hoolie says:

My husband and I are exactly the same height, too! For our wedding, I went to http://www.bestballroomshoes.com and ordered a pair of dance shoes with custom heels. They worked out great!

pandamonium says:

don’t despair! i’m in the same boat as you. my lovely hubby to be is only an inch taller than me! i ended up with some anne klein shoes that are kitten heels. they’re champagne (my wedding color is champagne), but they also come in white/ivory. i saw it at DSW, but they didn’t have it in my size, so i scooped up the champagne ones.

Tabitha (From Single to Married) says:

Shoes were definitely one of the toughest things for me. I’m 5′9″, but my husband is 6′8′. Problem is, I have feet issues and can’t wear really high heels. I had to settle for 1 1/2″ heels but they were quite pretty and comfortable. The best part is that it didn’t really matter after all.

Mrs. Tulip says:

Luckily, height isn’t an issue for us (he’s 6′2″ to my 5′10″). But I’m still SO glad I wore flats on our wedding day!! They were incredibly comfy, so I was able to stand through the ceremony, walk around town taking photos, and then dance all night without a single foot cramp or blister.

39.
Amy M says:

My fiance and I are exactly the same height, too! We are both 5′7″, so he is a shortie, but oh so cutie. I have chosen to wear low heals because I can’t bear the thought of my legs during the garter toss in flats. I am used to being a little taller than him when I wear heals anyway and he doesn’t mind it, so we are just not going to worry about it, although he does joke about lifts!
