Birds of a Feather

October 8th, 2008 @ 4:16 pm by Mrs. Hot Cocoa

Let me make this clear: I am not a feather person.  In fact, the thought of feathers usually makes me want to curl up into a fetal position — a little PTSD from when I was growing up in Hong Kong and the teachers would threaten to beat us with a feather duster if we were being naughty.

(Just for the record, I was a perfect angel. Except for that time in first grade when I stole some kid’s glue because I forgot mine for art class. Yeah, you read that right: my first crime was indeed craft-related. And I’m betting it won’t be the only craft crime I’ll have committed by the time my wedding planning is done.)

Lately, I’ve been noticing the use of feathers in a number of gorgeous weddings, particularly those with a vintage feel.

Exhibit 1: Sexy feather pomanders! Chic feather centerpieces!

Exhibit 2: A quirky bouquet of mauve and white orchids and — gasp — black feathers!

Exhibit 3: A lush English garden bouquet, amped up with white feathers!

Note that each of these weddings used feathers in a fairly restrained way. I am in no way endorsing a Big Bird aesthetic. Remember that outrageous episode of “Bridezillas,” in which the awful bride Monica tells her florist/mother-in-law that she wants peacock feathers and crystals and roses and calla lillies? Oy gevalt!

Anyway, this state of affairs leaves me confused. Feathers = corporal punishment? Or vintage glam wedding? Help me sort this out . . . .

I’ve noticed the trend too. at first i wasn’t too fond of it. but i’m totally loving a little feather action in hair flowers/pins. i’m thinking of getting one and hope to incorporate a little bit of a white fluffy feather.

Oh, I love the pictures you pic - it’s obvious you have an eye for the glam aspect - I vote “vintage glam wedding” :)

I was never one for feathers either until recently. I love the look of feathers mixed with flowers.

I’m totally rocking some feathers in my wedding, my theme is “sassy glamour” with a 30s, art deco feel, and they fit right in. They’ll be restrained– as a collar around my bouquet and my bridesmaids’ bouquets, in a few of the centerpieces, in a hairpiece and maybe as puffs on my shoes… I originally was going to put them on everything (invitations! all the centerpieces! my dress!) but have scaled back. I think they’re very sensual without being risque and add great texture to florals (or in place of florals!).

I love the way feathers look and I wish I could have them in my bouquets. Sadly, I’m very allergic (like Miss Dumpling). I do not want to be sneezing and gagging it up at my wedding.

@Miss Meatball: LOL. I can’t wait!

@Tosha and @Autumn: Both sound like weddings I’d like to see!

@Miss Dumpling and @prettyNpink1214: I”m worried about the same thing.

i was at a wedding where they used feathers instead of rose petals to toss and the bride and groom as they walked out the aisle. my first thought was, whoa.. feathers? but it worked!

I find little feathers in the hair so chic! As for feather dusters, is that appropriate for school? All I could think of was “kinky!”. ;-)
