Sharing My Secrets: The Food and Drink

October 8th, 2008 @ 1:57 pm by Mrs. Peacock

This post isn’t destined to be the most thrilling—either in photography or content—but I know that we had such a hard time deciding on our menu. I thought this might be helpful to others in the same boat.

All photos by Thorsen Photography

Mr. Peacock and I wanted to make the food as easy as possible. Although we truly trusted Calihan Catering, we had been to too many events with seared tuna on a wasabi cracker. We wanted simple, comfort food, and that was exactly what was delivered.

Pigs in blankets, with “fancy” mustard. Mr. Peacock makes these at home all the time, so it was a sweet, kind of silly homage to his cooking skills. The rosemary sprig really classes it up, no?

Mini cheeseburgers. These were (according to the red meat eating guests) totally delicious. There was a fresh slice of roma tomato on each burger. We also served pretzel bites with mustard (my favorite) and little slices of pizza.

Our signature cocktails were margaritas (my specialty) and Fat Tire Beer. This is where things got a little wonky, and it was one of the few places where one of my vendors messed up. I was told that they were ordering 2 cases of Fat Tire in 30 oz. bottles. Once poured into smaller glasses, that should have been more than enough for everyone to get a taste of our favorite beer and then some. Instead, 2 cases were ordered and the catering staff started handing out bottles. I thought that I had received a bottle because I was special. The Fat Tire ran out way too quickly and very few guests even realized that there was a specialty beer. Sad… but not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

My mom was making fun of me for drinking beer out of a bottle in my wedding gown. “But Mom, look how pretty the bottle is!”

I also didn’t realize that they were going to be using icky margarita mix with inexpensive tequila. They look pretty, I guess. My poor Grampy loves a good margarita and he wasn’t able to finish his.

I don’t have any photos of dinner, but it was yummy! For the salad, we served a small green salad with a little mug full of yummy tomato basil soup and two wedges of grilled cheese. Aside from a few guests thinking that the soup was salad dressing, it went over really well! The head table all joined the clean plate club. We chose a stuffed chicken breast (they left part of the bone in, keeping it juicier) with sweet potato fries, asparagus, and roasted cherry tomatoes.

The late night snacks were a hit in miniature form—little shamrock shakes and bite size Reuben sandwiches. My dad and I anxiously await those green shakes every year, so it was fun to have them passed on trays during their off-season. McDonald’s should be on watch!

What inspired your menu decisions?

I love how you said this post may not be thrilling…

I read it word for word and it was awesome… but I guess it goes to show that I’m kind of obsessed with food huh? I’m so hungry. I need a hot dog slathered with yellow mustard right now :) Loving your recap Mrs. P!

oh my gosh. seriously, your description of your food is to die for. comfort food is wonderful and you had some great choices served at your wedding! so on-target about the “seared tuna on wasabi cracker” jab. not that there’s anything wrong with serving those at receptions, but let’s get real. you could never go wrong with comfort food that everyone’s familiar with!

We chose our menu b/c usually when we go to weddings, the appetizers or cocktail hour food is the best. Therefore, we decided to have a cocktail reception. For cocktail hour we’re having spinach dip w/ tortillas, baked brie, crab dip, crackers, and fruit. For dinner we’re having pigs in a blanket, chicken bites on skewers w/a feta sauce, pot stickers w/ thai peanut sauce, lumpia w/ sweet chili sauce, mini beef wellington, fried mac & cheese bites, mini quesadillas, and mini crab cakes.

@MissCamera: I literally just gasped! A shamrock shake is a mint chocolate shake that McDonalds serves every year around St. Patrick’s Day. It rules. Please get one next March!

@ellekay:Sure :)

@thenewmrsw: Don’t get me wrong, seared tuna is actually my favorite meal and I always go for it when I see it. We just wanted to mix it up a bit, and comfort food is definitely more our style!

Mrs. Peacock, The food all sounds delicious. Were you upset that the photog didn’t get more pics of your food? We were just married in August, and the pictures from the wedding are stunning, but there are thousands of pics of me - and very few of all the details (including the food). It was my own fault for not explicitly telling him to take pics of all the details (and then telling him that details mean all things food and paper) and of course I hate to complain because the shots he did take are wonderful… I just wish we had pics of the food, but of course I feel silly saying that to anyone!

Ok, I knew that shamrock shakes existed at McD’s, but Mrs. P you just schooled me that it’s a chocolate mint shake! Holy smokes! I can’t believe I passed it up all these years! I just figured it was vanilla with green food coloring. :)

Some claim that it is vanilla with green food coloring and that the mint chocolate is in your head… I have not run extensive tests, but I believe it is the latter. I might need to do some blind taste tests this year!

@enmoore66: I’m not upset, although it would make it a lot easier to write these posts! I have some non-pro pics of the food. At least I can remember what we ate!

And mini comfort food, so great!
