DIY for Dummies?

After some thought about attempting to assemble my own pocket folds, I gave up and ordered them. With so many DIY brides these days, I knew there had to be resources that could assist in paper dimensions and layouts of pocket fold invitations. Little did I know that there are websites that literally do the entire thing for you. When I stumbled across some of these resources, I almost felt guilty- like I was cheating the DIY process.

Envelopper Inc has a wonderful feature that allows you to virtually create your invitation. You simply choose the size pocket fold you would like to use, and it literally gives you the size of all the different pieces needed. Talk about DIY for dummies!

Similarly, My gatsby has a design studio that allows you to mix and match products.

This tutorial is wonderful if you’re looking to make your own pocket folds. It tells you how much paper you’ll need, and gives dimensions and templates for all different size pocket folds. Here’s an example of the 4 x 7 pocket fold.

With all of these resources, I feel like I should’ve gone ahead and made our pocket folds myself. I guess I’ll just have to use the time on another DIY project.

I’m sure I’ll use some of the templates and inspiration from bees and brides before me, but my struggle is this: do you think that templates and tutorials encourage the DIY projects or are we just cheating our own creative process?

OMG. Why would you figure it all out yourself if somebody has put together a pattern for something that you like? I use patterns when I knit, sew, and cross stitch. I use recipes when I cook. Once you develop a certain level of proficiency and confidence, you start deviating from the recipe or pattern - but for me that usually comes from having seen how it turned out once or twice following the pattern/recipe, and deciding how I might like it to be different. If the only way you could ever create something was to start completely from scratch, with no inspiration or guidance, only the true artists among us would be crafters.

they definitely encourage diy projects! would you consider using study aids as cheating? it’s pretty much the same thing. templates and such just make things easier and more approachable you know? i love them and use them whenever i can. i take the “work smarter, not harder” approach to everything.

I think being able to find the templates and examples makes me more confident I can accomplish something! I like knowing the basics so I can skip the “how do I” part and get right to the creative, embellish everything with your personal touch part. I liked looking at envelopper because it was helpful getting measurements!

I just got my invites this week that I had ordered from mygatsby.com. i went with a single pocket fold 5X7 and i could NOT be happier. I adjusted the text on the invite so that I can still stamp and emboss the anchor art we had made for us onto it. I actually ended up stamping and embossing the outter envelope too.

I would love to hear about people’s experiences with buying invitation pieces from Envelopper! Our colors are red and chocolate brown and I love the Paper Source “petal” invitations but hate their shade of chocolate… so I’d love to try Envelopper’s pochettes…

Sorry but I had incredibly poor customer service with this company. I would be wary of anything you purchase from them. If you do end up ordering, make sure that they send you a tracking number. I would hate to have anyone else have to deal with them as I had to!
