How Mr. Sushi and I Came to Be

October 9th, 2008 @ 5:53 pm by Mrs. Sushi

I wish I had some romantic story to tell of Mr. Sushi and I. I wish I could tell you that I knew he was the one right away and that it was love at first sight. It wasn’t like that at all. First off, we met in a bar. And I’m pretty sure I was pretty tipsy. He he.

It was Wednesday night (yea, call it my mid-week stress reliever) and my girlies and I headed to our usual Wednesday night locale at the local watering hole. I’m a happy drunk, so after throwin’ back a few beers and some shots with the girls, I was being my friendly self and saying hi to random strangers at the bar. Mr. Sushi crossed my path and I said, “hello”.

Mr. Sushi: What nationality are you?
Me: White & Filipino.
Mr. Sushi: Me too!!
Me: No way! Here’s my phone number.
Done.

I got the traditional 2 day call back and while I’d like to say the rest is history, it wasn’t so easy. We “casually” dated for months and he would tell me he wanted to be “official”, then take it back; he also took back the first two times he told me he loved me. LoL. Our first year was rocky. We dealt with insecurities, trust issues….we even broke up once for about 4 months. Then Mr. Sushi got into some trouble. And I was there for him. For ALL of it. This gave him a whole new respect and appreciation for me. I forgave him for the past and after time we formed a new relationship, a more fulfilling one. Two years after all the drama, our relationship now is stronger than ever.

Ever hear a song that brings you back to a specific time or reminds you of an event in your life? This song by Murs, Love and Appreciate, explains how our relationship went, in a nutshell.

What song explains your relationship?

What an intriguing story. I love that Murs song yo. We always joke that “our song” is Lapdance by NERD…. what can I say? Its true.
So happy to have a ghettofabulous bee to commiserate with!

Sounds like you had about as rocky a start as Mr. Fondue and me. Our song is “Better Together” by Jack Johnson. After we broke up and were in the process of getting back together, Mr. Fondue played it for me saying that he didn’t want to live without me anymore because we were “better together”.

thank you so much for disclosing this. I too met my FH somewhat at a bar (technically it was outside smoking cigarettes)

our first year was very rocky too, and looking back I am so glad that we got our “conflict stage” out of the way. Now after 2.5 years and 3.5 when we’lll say “i do” we will just be an old married couple already.

our song that describes us and i will play for our first song is “it aint me babe - johnny cash and june carter”

I totally understand. They always say the first year or two is the “honeymoon phase”. For us, it was so black and white - we were either in love or having crazy fights. It took awhile, but now we are happier than ever! One of our songs is “each day gets better” by mr. john legend.

@Kimberly B.: I couldn’t have said it better myself. I know that after our past we can get through anything.

@JELLI: It is hard, communication is key.

@Miss Meatball: Funny! FYI if I wasn’t marrying Mr. Sushi, Pharrell would soooo be my baby’s daddy. hehe.

@Miss Fondue: I thought the same thing when I first read your story. Good to know not all love stories are perfect.

@Babooschka: Are you a Murs fan? Definitely check out his “Dark Skin White Girls” song. A verse is dedicated to the mixed kids! hehe.

@beaninca: Conflict stage, I like how that sounds. Glad we got it out of the way too. Now I feel we can relax and just enjoy each other. :o)

Aww, we also had a crazy first year. We’ve lived together since our first date (lol, we joke i’m the one night stand who never left!). Our first year was fun for 4 months and then my family situation got completely out of control with 4 major, huge, family deaths in 8 months and me being in the hospital and trying to go to school full time. Tons of fights, and we ended up breaking up for 2 months and still living together. Now we’ve been together 4 years next week, I’m attempting to get into grad school and we’ll set a wedding date in April. Our song is Crazy Love .. the version with BOb Marley and Van Morrison. :)
