The Theme that Dreams are Made Of

October 9th, 2008 @ 1:06 pm by Miss Meatball

Deciding on a theme was a difficult decision for my meaty man and me. We both wanted to love the Moroccan idea, but it felt kind of limiting to us, and we wanted something more unique and whimsical… more us. I searched and searched for inspiration, and then I struck gold.

This is what I’m talking about, people! This is the kind of whimsical, vibrant, unexpected, romantic and quasi-eastern feeling we want our wedding to exude!

I love it so much! I love the whimsy of the artwork and its echos of the east. I love the sensual swirliness, the juicy, fruity color deliciousness! I mean, c’mon! The colors here totally echo our bright color board and gorgeous bridesmaid dresses! How fortuitous is that?!

So, yes, I’m still inspired by Morocco. I’m still lurving its magical palettes and tiles and exotica. But, I am also loving India, Indonesia, and beyond! So, taking a hint from the wonderful left side of that amazing picture above, and seeing as our style love crosses country borders (and even continental ones), I hereby submit to you our new wedding theme:

(yum, how tasty is this “Caliph” Font?!?)

This way we can incorporate elements from all the styles we love, places we’re inspired by, and not feel tied to one specific theme. Plus, we wanted our theme to be more of an idea and not entirely literal, and I think this fusion is perfect for that! It’s offbeat, kooky, fun, and romantic—we just love it! It works really well with our venue, and I think it will brighten up the space really nicely.

I can’t wait to show you all the ways we’re weaving it into our design. Stay tuned!

What do you think? Are we crazy? Have you found a picture that unlocked all the potential your wedding has to offer?

Just for perspective…I’m Indian and you may just want to make sure that noone will get offended by the pictures of the Hindu Gods you have there and may incorporate. It doesn’t appear you are marrying in a church but…wouldn’t want any officiants or religious family members to get offended ..so just some food for thought.

@Beans654321: I hear your concern, but any religious imagery from any religion that we choose to incorporate in our design is done so with only the highest respect for those religions and the spiritual practices affiliated with them. That being said, Mr. Meatball and I are having a non-denominational ceremony with a friend officiating, and our families respect our spiritual views enough to not let the presence of any other religious iconography insult them. We’re pretty lucky that way :)

Gorgeous colors– I think it’ll really pop against the lower lighting in your venue. Can’t wait to see more!

Hmmm…is this cultural appropriation? I genuinely don’t know and I ask that in earnest. I’d probably talk with some of my friends from those cultures to make sure I wasn’t taking anything that is deeply sacred to them and turning it into a decoration.

I guess I’d be less worried about insulting my family than insulting the cultures from which I borrowed the imagery. Maybe beans654321 might have some insight?

First, I’d like to clarify to everyone that we’re not using THIS picture anywhere in our ceremony. It is inspiring to us, and we may borrow ideas and design concepts from it, which you’ll see more of later.

However, any religious icons we end up involving are chosen because their symbolism and meaning in their indigenous culture has deep meaning for us as well - and are interwoven into our beliefs.

Cultural appropriation involves taking cultural elements out of context and thereby lessening their significance in a new context. We’re honoring the cultures we’re inspired by and respectfully including these elements because they’re a part of who we are and how we live… not just because we think its cute.

I hope everyone reading, no matter what your culture or religion, understands that we’re not abusing or misusing any culture’s beliefs, art, icons or faith in our design. I’m frankly a little surprised at the concern, since I haven’t yet disclosed our religions, faiths or cultural backgrounds to the hive. But I also don’t think it matters. All I ask is that you have a little faith in us, and our intentions, as we go along.

Thank you!

hi, i’m indian, i think this train of thought is kinda silly….Indians appropriate other cultures and symbols all the time.

culture and symbols have lived on through time because they communicate to a variety of people at different places and different times…..they have their own unique power and i’m not sure that any group or individual can ever really control that.
