About Mrs. Avocado

Old, New, Borrowed, Blue

October 9th, 2008 @ 11:01 am by Mrs. Avocado

My mother’s veil, bought for $25 back in the ’80s.

You’ve seen these before. Don’t they look better now?

Grandma’s heirloom family cameo pin. It’s going to look fabulous pinned under the bust of my dress.

At 11PM last night I CUT INTO my dress and replaced one of the original ivory buttons with a blue cloth covered one. It won’t show when I put the dress on and do it up, and I love that it is my little secret something blue. (Have you detected my love for secret things yet?)

What creative ways did you find to fulfill your old/new/borrowed/blue?

beautiful! I love that veil and the pin and blue button is a great idea! I, unfortunately, was not quite as creative. :) I wore the nicest prettiest undergarments I could find in a light blue color. and my something borrowed was a piece of lace from my sister that I used to wrap around my flower stems. And the something old was a hankerchief from my grandmother.

I clipped a pair of my grandma’s vintage clip earrings onto the comb of my birdcage veil. They looked fabulous!

I just did a post on my own little bitty wedding blog about my Somethings!! My something blue is a Star Sapphire Ring my Dad gave to my Mom when they were dating! Sapphire is my birthstone and I have always loved the ring, my mom told me a few weekends ago when we were talking about my something old (my great-grandmother’s handkerchief which my mom also carried) that she would like me to have the ring! I almost cried, I love the heritage of weddings, and this is definitely one I will pass on to my own daughters!

Are you wearing a different dress to the temple? That is such a good idea for the button (and ivory fabric, so pretty!!)… but doesn’t the dress have to be 100% white?

Sorry if you have addressed this already… I missed it.

I love your old, new, borrowed and blue!
For my wedding I had my memere (who had passed away a year before the wedding) blue rosary beads intertwined with my bouquet. For my borrowed, I completely forgot about a garter so I borrowed the one my sister wore for her wedding!

For my….

Borrowed - my late grandpa’s cufflink tied to my bouquet (which I will return to my grandma after the wedding)

Blue - pretty blue panties

Old - Can my grandpa’s cufflink count as old too?

New - my dress, jewelry, shoes, you name it - most everything is new

And….as they say, a six pence for my shoe!

Something old: my mom’s garter! I can’t believe she still has it, but she does, and I think it’s too great NOT to wear it.

Something borrowed: handkerchief from my grandmother that she carried at her wedding (she made it very clear she wants it back)

Something new: dress! shoes!

Something blue: haven’t decided on this yet…I’m leaning toward a some blue lace hankypanky undies ;)

and my grandmother gave me a sixpence! now I just have to figure out how to make it stay in my shoe….

My something old is a Megalodon tooth I found on a scuba dive trip with my fiance. Something new: dress? jewelry? veil? I’m covered. Something Borrowed: I’m sure I’ll forget something and someone else will lend a hand. Something blue: I have a blue tattoo on my foot!

Starry-Eyed Barefoot Bride says:

oh - and a irish penny either duct taped to my foot, or in a secret pouch in my garter!

@Starry-Eyed Barefoot Bride: Really wish I had done this. I love being so traditional. I just lost steam towards the end….

@Emily: I am kind of anti-garter, but if my mom still had hers I would so wear it!

@Mrs X: Love the idea of using Grandma’s clip on earrings. My grandma is a clip on earring person and so I could have done the same!

@SmallTownBride: Definitely something to treasure forever. Very sweet.

@Lyndsay: I did wear a different dress to the temple! You are right about the dress needing to be white and I bought mine knowing I wouldn’t be able to wear it inside. I can’t wait to post about what I ended up wearing!

@Miss Lemonade: I had to brainstorm forever to think of the one blue button! I can’t believe that you are up to three now!
