Mrs. Dumpling, Las Vegas Age and Occupation: 27, Finance Fiance's Age and Occupation: 34, Real Estate Engagement Date: March, 2008 Wedding Date: March, 2009 Blogging Since: August 26, 2008 Venue: Catholic church ceremony & golf course reception About Me: I grew up in the Deep South, and while most people say I have a thick southern accent, I tend to think it only comes out when I need to use it. Living in Las Vegas has definitely been an adventure and Mr. Dumpling and I are loving every minute of it! We are planning a traditional Catholic wedding ceremony and a reception with lots of DIY! We might even get Elvis to show up! I'm a HUGE Beatles fan, love The Office and can't wait to become a Mrs.!

Southern Reception Menu

October 9th, 2008 @ 3:01 pm by Mrs. Dumpling

I can’t decide if this is tacky or fun. I’m a little bit of both, so maybe it’ll be OK. While most of you guys are out having your bacon wrapped filet mignon and Alaskan salmon for your main course, the Dumplings will be eating something a little more…. casual?

I grew up in Alabama, and up until about age 23, I only ate “Southern food.” The only Chinese food I had eaten was at the mall and cultural day at school consisted of Taco Bell and “heat ’n serve” meatballs. So not joking.

Since our rehearsal dinner will be at a Vietnamese restaurant (anyone else addicted to pho?), we thought it might be cool to honor my heritage at our reception. Who doesn’t like fried chicken and grits, right? We might even get our chef to use some old family recipes!

We haven’t decided on the menu items, but we’re definitely going to include the traditional Southern “staples.” Check out my inspiration photos!

Fried green tomatoes, ham and cranberry jelly:

Deviled eggs (I’ve been known to eat the entire carton in one day):

Shrimp and grits:

Sweet Potato Casserole

Fried chicken, cornbread and black-eye peas:

You get the idea, right? If the main ingredient is cellulite, it probably qualifies as “Southern food.” HaHa, I kid! Is your mouth watering yet?

How cool would it be to have Chick-Fil-A cater the cocktail hour? I’m so jealous of all of you ladies (and guys!) who live near them and can eat the chicken nuggets and waffle fries every single day. (Can someone mail some to Las Vegas? kthanxbai) Now, that, would be Southern!

What do we think of this?

I would love some suggestions, Bees! Do you have a favorite Southern dish that you think would be cool for our menu? Bonus points for links to recipes!

Love your idea! Definitely do it! Everyone does steak and salmon or chicken or whatever. Go with fun food that you love. I was so sick of wedding food, that for my wedding, the main course was mini kobe beef burgers and fries and for the vegetarians we did a gorgeous mac ‘n cheese… the rest of the wedding was definitely on the formal side so this wa a fun addition that our guests loved!

I went to a wedding where they served grits in a martini glasses, and you had a choice of shrimp, chicken, and mushrooms to put with them. It was both stylish and delicious! I think the Southern food is a fab idea!

LOVE IT! I’m from NYC and I have been to two southern weddings (NC and SC) and both served shrimp and grits. One wedding had stations- so that was one of the stations, but the other had the shrimp and grits served during cocktail hour in martini glasses- AMAZING!

I went to a black tie wedding in Birmingham this summer that had all of those foods. And a fish fry!

My cousin served mac and cheese at her reception - for about 4 years, it was one of the only foods she would eat (started out as a way to mess with her mom, then became something she could afford and make in college, and now is simply a staple in her diet). Because of her (well-known) love affair with the food, it was a cute addition to the menu (and got people reminiscing about the bride when she was younger). Go for the Southern food!

I much prefer this food over the boring wedding staples. Can I come to your wedding? ;)

Love it! My mother hated it! So, we compromised. We’ve decided on a “comfort food” menu for the rehersal dinner, fried & bbq chicken, mac n cheese, yams, rice and peas, etc.. As for the wedding dinner, it will be the traditional entree items. My moms thinks it would be gross to see guest licking their fried chicken fingers, LOL!

MMMM… I love me some southern food, and I’ve never even been to the south. It is on my list of things to do though.

Chicken fried steak with white gravy … yummmmm.

My fiancee and I love comfort food. For the cocktail hour we’ll have lighter foods like mini quiche, chicken satay, hummus and pita chips, etc. but for the reception we’re thinking of doing a BBQ. mac & cheese, baked potato bar, ribs, steak, grilled corn & veggies and assorted salads.
