About Mrs. Meatball

The Greenness

October 10th, 2008 @ 10:29 am by Mrs. Meatball

Before I was engaged, I had only attended a few weddings in my day, and of those, only one was a “fully fleshed out” event. So, imagine my surprise when I found out that the average cost of a wedding in Los Angeles is upwards of (insert spit take here) $30,000!!! Not to mention all the waste and energy use that one creates, which is no bueno for our lovely mother earth. Not for this dirty hippie, yo.

(hippie goodness)

So, we’re trying to do our part to reduce our carbon footprint and be frugal about the process. Honestly, the frugality is more a product of necessity since we’re broke-ass, but it also makes me feel less wasteful. Bonus! :)

One thing we explored early on was printing our invitations on seeded paper, or at the least, recycled paper with soy-based ink. Seeded paper also comes with the added bonus of being able to have something tangible grow from our love, which is too charming for words.

Greenfield Paper Company is a great place to find these invitations, notes and other cute eco-friendly items.

We also considered doing seed packet favors, or seeded paper favors, but the packets are cuter, no? Since we lined up the photo booth, we’re not sure we need extra favors… but we’ll see how the budget looks as we get closer.

We’re planning to secure party-shuttle transport for the out-of-towners or anyone else who wants a ride, to keep down emissions and to also provide a sober means of transport. For everyone else, we’re encouraging car-pooling.

Lastly, I’ll be wearing an eco-friendly gown that features recycled and organic fabrics, made by a local designer (more on this later). We tried to find a way to also get the bridal party and my man into eco-conscious clothing too… but that’s much harder to come by, and often not the most cost-effective.

Sometimes I get down on myself for wanting to choose the prettier, more fun, more exciting and often cheaper option over what’s “responsible”. But then I remember that keeping the earth in mind a little while planning is better than not at all. Hopefully, my little bits of greenness will compile with other brides’ efforts… and if we each do a little something to be kinder to the earth, it will all add up. I still try to come up with ways to be green each day I plan… and if they work, then all the better.

Go team Earth!

What are you doing to “greenify” your wedding?

We’re keeping everything as local as possible - including trying to use vendors located near to our home or the venue. And I just bought my dress - from a lovely charity that accepts designer gown samples and gently worn dresses and then sells them WAY below cost and donates the $ to charity.

we’re making our own seed packets, and our invites are very low paper, and most of it is 100% recycled plus some PCW…also cutting back on flowers

I just had a pretty green wedding. We got our invitations from baron cards. They are printed on recycled paper and are seriously gorgeous and great quality. I got so many compliments. There was a pool on the deck of our venue so I had to use plastic cups uggghh but I ordered the ones made out of corn. They were a hit. We had organic flowers, local food, a trolley for guest transportation and my dress came from on online shop that sells used dresses.

We just had a pretty green wedding. I got my dress from used wedding dresses. com. We had organic flowers, cups made from corn, local food, a trolly for guests and we got our invites from Baron Cards. They were printed on recycled paper and were gorgeous!

We’re planning a green wedding, too! Check out my planning site at http://www.soontobethegrises.com. I had my dress made out of vintage champagne eyelet lace, we’re going ALL local in terms of a local flower farm for flowers, local organic catered food, recycled seed paper invites and programs from a local company (www.twistedlimbpaper.com), and will purchase carbon offsets from terrapass.com. Great to see other brides taking greenness to heart!

Okay, I love the Greenfield Paper Company, but they are crazy expensive! One invitation plus two enclosures plus the envelope $15!?! I was drooling over their Christmas cards, but at over $3 each even if you order the multiple card box, my friends and family will have to get by with the bad old standards, and I’ll just hope that they recycle.

- no flowers, just potted plants that will continue to thrive in our house afterward
- seeded paper for our favors
- recycled paper for all our stationary, including invites, save the dates, etc.,
-biodegradable servingware, including disposable bamboo silverware
- “getaway vehicle” to take us to the reception? - our feet! The reception we booked is two blocks away, so most of our guests will walk, as will we. Our honeymoon suite for the night is in between ceremony and reception site
- organic fabric for all BM gifts and program covers

My BM gave seeds out as her favor. We collected them from a friend’s garden and put them in little wax envelopes with a cute label. It was easy, green and had a nice thought process to the whole idea. It was also super economical. I think the whole thing only cost about $25 after buying the evelopes, the labels and brads we used to put the labels on.

one of the best ways to have a green wedding is to have a VEGETARIAN wedding. Save some animals lives and its so much better for the environment.
