In Lust with Damask

October 10th, 2008 @ 8:36 am by Ms Fondue

I can’t remember the exact moment when I thought to myself, “Damask has to be in the wedding!” But seeing Miss (now Mrs.!) Sundae’s table runners definitely played a part in the decision. I immediately got yards and yards of the Traditions fabric from buyfabrics.com, where I happened to have a 25% coupon at the time.

When I received the fabric, I noted that the design didn’t start at the edge; it was centered. So I could get three table runners out of the width, with leftovers on the ends. I promptly started making table runners.

But what to do with all that leftover fabric? I certainly didn’t want it to go to waste.

So, the fabric is being included in a lot of our DIY projects, including our card box, ring bearer pillow, flower girl basket, and wedding party gifts (neckties for the ring bearers and sashes for the flower girls), among other things.

For the card box, I started with a papier-mâché box from a craft store and cut a hole in the lid.

Ignore the messy coffee table…

With the help of Mr. Fondue, I covered the bottom of the box in the fabric, hot gluing it to the bottom and inside.

Then I spray-painted the lid black.

What other ideas can you think of to use the excess fabric for?

I love it! Mrs. Sundae’s post on her table runners definitely made me want my own! And I think I may steal your idea for a card box ;) How many yards did you buy and how wide was the fabric? I think I’ll have 10-12 tables, so I’m not sure how many yards I should buy.

What table cloth color are you using under your table runner? Our hotel has standard white and black… but I’m not sure I want black tables and I don’t think it would look good on white?

Just curious - where does one obtain 25% off coupons for this site? Do you sign up for an account with them or can you find them online?

@cannotwait: That is actually in the works! ;)

@nada122: The fabric is 54″ wide. I got 16 yards for my 16 runners, but that was before I realized that I couldn’t get 4 complete runners off of the width (you can only get 3 if you want them to have the full design on them). So I may need more eventually. We’re having black tablecloths.

@Amy: I just signed up for their newsletter (you can find the link on their website).

Oooh! I love damask; in fact, I loved it so much that my friend Alexis was kind enough to throw us a celandon green/damask engagement party. I have no ideas for your fabric use, but I wanted to say that I love your design choice and that your card box looks great:)

You could wrap bouquets, or ribbon create ties for them.

A really snazzy ring pillow! Pocket squares for the dudes! Accent wrap for your bouquet! Cloth cover for your guestbook? A fabric mat in a photo frame? Oh man, it’s a good thing I’m not a damask bride cause it would seriously look like the damask fairy threw up all over the place there’s so many options…

Love it! I too have a lust for damask and want to have table runners such as these, but didn’t want to spend a fortune to do it…this may just be the answer. Oh and I love that card box! : )

Heehee, I made runners too. I LOVE them. If they don’t get too messed on / stained at the wedding I’m going to sew them together in strips to make curtains! Because, really, mine ARE curtain fabric.

How about cloth napkins? Are you having a sit down dinner? They would be cute fanned and popped into wine glasses. Or, how about hankies? If you have a sewing machine surger you could just surge squares for napkins, or hankies use some black thread for a border. Do you sew? If you don’t sew there’s always iron hem tape you could use to fold over the edges and iron so the fabric won’t run. Could even layer on a piece of your accent color ribbon on the edges with the hem tape. Is there enough left for a cute skirt to ware for your rehearsal dinner?

Funny. I blogged about this as well. I am thinking about using the leftovers to make a tie for my ring-bearer and the boy “bridal babies”. So cute.

I made runners with the “essence onyx” fabric from that website, the weddings next weekend 2/14/09 and have 15-16 of them. I’m sure i plan to sell them when i’m done along with all the other damask items from the wedding.
