Mrs. Cupcake, Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 27, Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Construction Project Manager Engagement Date: February 10, 2007 Wedding Date: September, 2008 Blogging Since: December 7, 2007 Venue: The Desmond Hotel in Malvern, PA About Me: Mr. Cupcake and I hit it off at a Halloween party and immediately began a long-distance relationship. After two years, he moved to my neck of the woods, and a year and a half after that, he proposed at the “place we fell in love.” I am a true perfectionist who enjoys designing and creating more work for myself, so wedding planning is my perfect outlet. Mr. Cupcake and I are both old souls, and we hope to weave that aspect of our personalities into our wedding day.
About Mrs. Cupcake

Last weekend was our first weekend at home as newlyweds, but unfortunately we had to go out of town (four hours away) for a funeral. This weekend is the first that Mr. Cupcake and I have been able to chill out as Mr. & Mrs. and do whatever our little hearts desire. So far, this has consisted of:

  • dinner with friends Friday night
  • sleeping in Saturday morning
  • going fishing (Mr. Cupcake)
  • watching Legally Blonde in pajamas while blogging (Mrs. Cupcake)
  • venturing into the city together to conduct a Pat’s vs. Geno’s cheese steak tasting experiment (two huge cheese steak competitors in the City of Brotherly Love)
  • attending a photography exhibit in our town and getting ice cream on the walk home

While watching tv one night last week, we saw something on the Travel Channel about Pat’s vs. Geno’s and we thought, “wouldn’t it be fun to taste-test both places in one day?” We promptly added this adventure to our “after the wedding” list, and had nothing else to do yesterday (an absolutely beautiful October day), so we went for it.

First up: Pat’s.

After Pat’s, we headed directly across the street to Geno’s, Pat’s biggest competitor for 42 years.

What We're Doing with Our First Free Weekend as Newlyweds : wedding philadelphia Genos S01Geno’s has a much flashier facade. What We're Doing with Our First Free Weekend as Newlyweds : wedding philadelphia Genos OIt’s all very…. orange.

We didn’t get any photos of Geno’s steaks…. we couldn’t find a table so we had to stand and eat, and perhaps we were a little delirious from eating our second cheese steak (each) of the day, so we forgot. Oops.

So, yes, I ate two cheese steaks in a 30-minute time frame. No, I am not proud. But it was for the sake of research, people, and as a Philadelphian, I take my cheese steaks very, very seriously. The winner of the Cupcake household 2008 cheese steak survey: Pat’s — King of Steaks.* Better steak, the line moved faster, there were more tables, and ruder service (it’s a Philly thing). Plus, Pat’s was there before Geno’s, and we’re all about loyalty to the original.

Dear hive, these are the silly things you do as newlyweds with lots of newfound free time. It is delightful. Today, we’re going to go see a matinee showing of Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist. Pre-wedding-chaos, we used to always see movies on Sunday afternoons, loving the fact that there are never any crowds and it’s always cheaper. Neither of us can even remember the last time we did this.

This newlywed thing definitely suits us. Definitely.

Do any other newlyweds out there have fun newlywed-ish adventures to share? If you’re not married yet, what are you most looking forward to doing once all of the wedding excitement is over?

*Opinion only.

Ha. Our wedding after-party involved an impromptu Pats vs. Geno’s taste-off. A bunch of the groomsmen hopped in cabs and headed down, bought a bunch of steaks, and brought them back and everyone scarfed them down. As a non-meat eater, I abstained, but all my friend, not from the Philadelphia area, were thoroughly disgusted (in a good, entertained, never-eat-another-cheesesteak-but-fun-to-try-once way) with the event.

Sadly, we’ve been married 4 months, but we both work 7 days a week, so after our honeymoon, we’ve had exactly ONE weekend in four months that we’ve both had off… and we had to spend it with family, so we didn’t get to have any enjoyable together just us time. Sigh.

I agree — it is wonderful. One of our favorite things to do on the weekend is to roam in downtown Manhattan — the west village, soho, east village, lower east side…so many things to see, tasty things to eat etc. Keep enjoying your newly-wed adventure Mrs. Cupcake!

Ha. We totally did this, too, and have practically the same pictures of us stuffing our faces. I also say Pat’s is best.

How fun!! I totally saw that cheesesteak episode, you are so lucky you can eat them! I love the idea of an after wedding list of to-do’s after the i-do’s! I can’t wait to be a newlywed!!

I had to read the cheesesteak part to Mr. Penguin. He admires your ability to eat that much following your honeymoon!!! We went into a virtual diabetic shock after gorging ourselves on honeymoon, neither of us could eat anything but soup and for a week, for fear of dying from clogged arteries! I cant wait to visit Philly one day and do a little side by side cheesesteak comparison of my own!

That’s so fun! I love just hanging out in public with our wedding bands on! Did you guys try Tony Luke’s ever? I think they are the best cheese steaks in Philly!!

Well, I have to ask. Provolone instead of whiz? Always thought whiz was the thing to get in Philly. How do these stack up against Jim’s on South Street? Planning a trip out to Philly and just need to know now that you are the experts!

Of course Pat’s wins! And for more than one reason. Geno’s xenophobic “Speak English” signs and philosophy will always keep me away. (I get so angry walking by Geno’s that I can’t imagine eating there these days).

That said, we have a great city to enjoy newlywed life in. Congrats!

I so agree. Pat’s is way better than Geno’s. Sounds like a fabulous weekend over all Mrs. C.

And to alaud41 - Jim’s is, in my opinion, the best of Philly. Pat’s is a great experience since it’s been around so long. But I think the steaks are Jim’s are tastier.

*Advice from a resident Philadelphian. :-)

@julieulie: what a fun unofficial after-party! I hope you two have more time soon to do mindless newlywed-type things.

@Mrs. Penguin: I definitely needed a little time to detox after the honeymoon… and after 2 cheese steaks for a late lunch on Saturday, I couldn’t eat anything else for the day :-)

@missteaberry and @alaud41: I think we’re going to have to do a Tony Luke’s/Jim’s comparison next! I have been to Jim’s but it’s been years…. and I’m not a fan of wiz, but Mr. Cupcake wants to try a “wiz wit” the next time :-)

Yes, Mr. Cupcake will have to go with the whiz. Franky, I think any kind of cheese that comes from a can is mildly repulsive (this is why my husband thinks the city of Philadelphia is going to reject me once I move there), but as a native Philadelphia, HE thinks the ONLY way to eat a cheesesteak is “whiz wit”!

(And the consensus at our after-party was if you’re going to go ahead and give yourself the heart attack, you may as well go all-out and do the cheese-whiz — no point in trying to class it up with the provolone!)
