Passport Save the Date Follow-Up

October 13th, 2008 @ 2:26 pm by Mrs. Sushi

Thanks everyone for all the great comments on my save the dates post! I can’t take all the credit for our passport save the dates. When I first saw Knottie AmyInSydney make them, I thought they were a cute, cheeky way to send everyone some basic travel information.

amyinsydney

Knottie eyeheartmike made her passports about the same time I made ours. She used them as her welcome letter in her OOT bags. Her passport pages included her wedding day time line, information about optional activities she had planned for her guests, a section where the guest could write notes and their trip highlights, and my favorite part: she had a map listing where all her guests were staying.

While our save the dates were definitely cost efficient, they were very time consuming. What we saved in dollars, I paid for in time. Not only did designing the the layout take time, but printing and assembling the passports were time consuming as well.

Here are some tips and suggestions for those who want to attempt to make their own passports…

stdpage

I had to layout the pages “book” style. I had to make sure that the pages corresponded, i.e., page 1 would be printed attached to page 10 (when folded in half), and page 2 would be print attached to page 9.

Make sure you PROOFREAD! In fact, I suggest having someone else (or two or three people) look over it for you, as you tend not to notice your own errors when you have been staring at something too long.

I already owned newsprint paper, which I believe I originally purchased at Pearl. Do a test print when printing on different types of paper. Originally I printed on the newsprint paper with a laser printer; not only did I have trouble feeding the paper through the printer, but the ink wiped right off the paper when touched. An ink jet printer worked wonders, though.

You don’t have to have a Gocco to make the passport cover. You could do what eyeheartmike did and print on card stock, or you can order a custom made stamp and just ink and stamp the cover.

My passport details:

  • The page size is approximately 8.5″ x 5.5″ folded in half, with each page being double sided (except the first page, which was printed with the last page)
  • The first page was taped to the inside cover
  • The corners were rounded with a round corner punch
  • the cover and pages were attached together by one staple

Where did you find inspiration for your save the dates?

thanks so much miss sushi, i love what you did. I got inspiration for this through amyinsydney as well and aylee. Where can I find linen cardstock though, I’m in the midst of purchasing a gocco. Which model do you have? I’m thinking of getting a pg-10, is this a good choice? thanks

@hawt691: I have the PG5. I was too cheap to spend the money on the PG-10, but if you can afford it, by all means get it! I wish I would’ve invested in the “bigger” model.

@boomie: @That Perfect Something: @hawt691: I apologize, I don’t have a template for my passports. I did the layout in Illustrator and PhotoShop, so unless you have those programs, I won’t be much help.

Hi Miss Sushi! Is it possible for you and I to work something out and pay you to make these up for me? You did an AMAZING job and I definetly don’t have the resources to do such a thing!

@andrea: @Toolie Shutter: @kaitlin: @Frank: I really appreciate how much you like my work; it took me months to get it right! Because I designed it from scratch, I don’t have a template I can share with you. They were designed in Photoshop and there are a million layers involved. There are some tips in this post to make your own passports and if you have any specific questions, please don’t hesitate to PM me and ask. I hope you have fun playing with these like I did; I wish you the best of luck on your own DIY projects!

Why are you on this site if you don’t want to share? Most of the bees are much more helpful and it took you forever to respond to our post. Shady!

@craftsguru: Hmmmm, your response made me think about whether or not you had a point. In actuality, I think that this site is for inspiration, in which case Miss Sushi ROCKED. I mean, don’t we all want to do a passport now? If instead this site was supposed to be “the place to go for templates” or something like that, you might have a point.

And, as the errant bee who disappeared for two weeks, I understand not getting back to respond to comment. I mean, y’all must understand that in addition to our real jobs and blogging, we have this big thing called a wedding to actually plan!

If you get a passport done, though, shoot me a PM and I’ll share your template on a post — full credit going to you!

I noticed that alot of people were interested in the template. I actually hired someone to make mine at a reasonable price and I was really pleased with the customer service and final product.

If anyone wants some recommendations on a designer that I used for these and a few other designers that I found that do passport invitations, please e-mail me at andrea.puckett@gmail.com and I will send you the recommendations and others that I found.

I don’t know why people just say I don’t share. You (meaning anyone) works hard on a project.

Here’s a passport template though:

Mrs. Sushi’s passports look amazing! You can definitely see the labor of love in its complexity.

Can you share your template for the passport “save the dates”? I love the dark blue ones. Do you have instructions on how to make them, like paper style? Also, do you recommend a paper stock store to purchase it from?

Amazing save the dates!

Thanks so much! My email is theresa.sarra@gmail.com
