Dinner Dilemma

October 13th, 2008 @ 1:32 pm by Mrs. Spring Roll

Sister Spring Roll was married in April. She served her guests an amazing chicken parmigiana catered by a local Italian restaurant. Mr. Spring Roll and I knew that we wanted the same restaurant to cater our wedding dinner. However, we are unsure of which dishes we want to serve, as we want our guests to have a variety.

Yesterday I held a dinner for the Spring Roll family (FMIL, FFIL, mom, sister, and Mr. SR) to sample different entree options for the wedding. I ordered seven entrees from the restaurant, which cost me a pretty penny. When Mr. Spring Roll and I picked the food up from the restaurant, we were handed a large brown bag with all seven dishes inside. Halfway home, I realized the bag was leaking sauce all over Mr. Spring Roll’s upholstery.

I thought one of the lids might have come off. Boy, was I wrong! I opened the bag to find the top three containers sunken into the bottom four containers. Upon seeing it, I wanted to cry. I had planned for a beautiful meal and ended up with a smooshed mess. Disappointed and devastated, I phoned the restaurant and asked to speak to the manager. The manager apologized and kindly offered to remake all of the food. I live about fifteen to twenty minutes away from the restaurant, so picking up new food would have been an inconvenience and a waste of food. Instead, I asked the manager to at least credit my debit card for the amount it would cost to have Mr. Spring Roll’s upholstery cleaned; he agreed to do so.

Nevertheless, the Spring Roll family loved the food, smooshed mess and all. So here I am with a dinner dilemma:

Do we forgive and forget, and give the restaurant a second chance? Or do we begin searching for a new caterer?

Have you had any catering disasters you’d like to share?

If everyone loved the food, and if the manager does as promised in regards to crediting your debit card and the cleaning of Mr. Springroll’s car, then I would go with them. Sounds like a random screw-up, and unless that is the way they will be delivering food to your venue, not one you’d have to worry about on wedding day.

Forgive and forget The restaurant did its best to remedy the situation. First they offered to replace all your food - which is more than many locations would do. When that wouldn’t solve the situation, they agreed to pay to have the upholstery cleaned - which is much more than most locations would do.

I think that this experience was a vote in their _favor_ because you know they’ll do their best to provide good customer service.

I agree with jtg. The restaurant offered to replace all the food. Also, if you all love the way it tastes, just make sure that they package and deliver the food differently for your wedding.

Forgive and forget. It was probably just poor choice in slecting ‘to go’ boxes. I’m guessing that this restaraunt doesn’t usually sell most of the entrees to go, that the containers they gave you are mostly used just for leftovers - which are much lighter loads. An honest mistake. Its not like they charged you for 7 entrees, and only gave you 2, or skimped on your order, or gave you horrible tasting food.

They were kind and tried to remedy the situation. It sounds like they’re a good company.

I agree with everyone above. If you’re asking them to cater the dinner, then they will be prepared to appropriately bring the food as necessary, and the mishap won’t occur — which was the only problem. You loved the taste, and the manager seemed more than willing to do what was necessary to remedy the situation, so he seems like a good vendor with whom to work. Just don’t volunteer to drive all the food on the day of your wedding yourself! :)

My thought was that if they did a good job at your sister’s wedding, that’s a huge vote of confidence. MMM now I’m in the mood for Italian!

I eighth the what everyone else voted for. The food was good and though the logistics were not so good, the reponse to the problems was the best they could do and more than most would do. If your sister din’t have any problems then chances are you wouldn’t either.

I’m the 9th vote for forgive and forget! The restaurant handled this better than most; good customer service is shockingly rare.

I once left a strawberry smoothie in my friend’s car…and it spilled all over the backseat. Long story short, we used oxyclean to get the stain and and the parts we cleaned ended up being even cleaner looking than the surrounding seats!

Everyone makes mistakes. If they seemed to be genuinely sorry and they did do what they promised (credit your debit) then I would give them another chance. Accidents happen.
