Dress Shopping… Blah!

October 14th, 2008 @ 2:37 pm by Mrs. Sushi

Let me start by saying I hate shopping for clothes. I hate trying on clothes, and I’m one of those people that can’t buy any article of clothing without trying it on. I’m short, not proportioned, and have no arse.

So I began shopping for a wedding dress. A task I was dreading. I did the whole internet search and was in awe of these dresses (*sorry for the small images, I’m still new at this whole blogging thing)…

The next task of mine was to find local stores that carried these dresses so I could try them on. I found out that Saeyoung Vu Couture was no longer in business, and of course, her dresses were my favorite. That’s usually my luck. Onward, I went to two dress shops in Philly; one supposedly carried the Jenny Yoo line. I got there, only to find out not only do they only have maybe 20 dresses in the whole store (which were yellowed and some of the lace had holes in it), but they carried the Jenny Yoo catalog. Yea, no dresses to try on. So I moved onto the 2nd bridal store in Philly and loved these on me:

While they were very form flattering, I felt that they were a lil’ too dressy for our casual Hawaii wedding, so the search continued.

Last month I headed up to New York City with Mr. Sushi in tow, and I found my dress. No, I didn’t have that “it” moment, but it’s not too much more than what I wanted to spend, it was flattering, and was appropriate for the wedding we’re having.  It is lightweight, and Mr. Sushi approved. Yep, you heard me right. Mr. Sushi saw me in the dress. And while I know most of you are shaking your heads in disapproval, I’m pleading my case.

  1. Mr. Sushi is a “typical” guy, who, in 5 months from now won’t remember what that dress looked like, or how it looked on me.
  2. On said wedding day, I will look totally different with dress on, hair did, makeup done, and with my shoes and accessories on.
  3. We’re nontraditional folk. Why start being traditional now?

So here it is… here’s the dress I’ve decided on!

I apologize for not showing photos of moi in the dress… can you believe that this photographer totally didn’t think of taking photos at the dress shop?!

Did your fiance see you in your dress before the big day?

So pretty! I love the obi bow, too– great way to tie in the Japanese aesthetic!

Really pretty!!! I love the bow! My fiance has seen the dress (in magazines) about a dozen times, but only remembers that it is ivory. Yep, he’s a “typical” guy too. Besides, he says that it is only fair that he gets to see the dress when I not only help him to pick his suit for the wedding, but saw him try it on.

I was having trouble deciding on a dress and finally buckled and showed my FI some pictures of the models in the dresses. He didn’t offer much in the way of advice — he assured me I’d look beautiful in any of them — but describing the dresses to him helped me figure out which one I really wanted.

At one point I did consider taking him dress shopping. It’s just like you said, Miss Spring Roll — he’s a guy, he won’t remember the dress in a year, and also it will be totally different when I’m all dolled up and wearing the right size vs. when I have messy hair and the dress is held together with giant clips in the back! But I decided to spare him :-)

Awesome dress, and yes my FI went with me to try it on. I completely bypassed this whole dress shopping thing (sometimes I regret it) because I saw the dress online, called around, one boutique had it, took 15 minutes with my mom and FI and tried it on. Boom, deposit :)

He had to see it. A) we’re not traditional either B) it’s red. :)

I love your dress! So simple! My fiance hasn’t seen me in the dress but I gotta try it on soon and I will show it to him. He also is the typical guy. I’ll show it to him and he will definitely forget how it looked like even after the wedding he’ll prob won’t remember. Guys just don’t care about clothes, to them its just a piece of cloth.

I love the simplicity of the dress.

My husband saw me in the dress I put on for our civil ceremony. It was not a wedding dress per say and I worn it before during dates with him.
Now the big familly ceremony involves me in an actual wedding dress and no he hasn’t seen it.
I want to keep one element of surprise. And I won’t see him in his kilt until the wedding day either.

If you are looking to tie some “filipino” culture into your dress…why not find a monique lhullier dress…she’s “filipino” and you’ll be helping a fellow haolepino put her name out there…

…PLUS her dresses are amazing in person!

My mom is an amazing seamstress and made my dress. My hubby saw me in all stages of the dress and helped me design it. He even sewed part of the dress. (OK, my mom helped guide him and he really can’t sew), but I love that he was a part of it. Funny thing is, after all that, he still saw me on the wedding day, and said, “Is this a different dress?” I’m glad you got his “approval”! I think it is so much more fun that way. You marry your best friend. I think it is great to have your best friend’s opinion on something so personal and important.

Mr. Doctorgirl has seen the dresses I’ve tried on. I trust his judgment, so why not show him? I have to go try on more dresses this weekend and I’m not looking forward to it :(

I realize now that Mr. Avocado probably wouldn’t have remembered what I looked like in the dress if I had shown him. I did show him the stock picture and he said he thought he would like it, but he has absolutely no ability to process what things look like unless they are on me. I know that most girls don’t even give ANY hint whatsoever, but I think most boys just don’t care that much…..

Yup he saw me. We went to go shopping together and he was even pickier than me. BUT in the end he loved the one I did, so yay! I have to say he doesn’t remember too much. He thought it had straps–the dress is strapless. LOL. It will be a big surprise the day of even though he’s seen it anyways.
