Help Me Choose a Vintage Dress!

October 14th, 2008 @ 4:07 pm by Mrs. Taffy

It’s poll time again!

Last week I wrote about the Halloween wedding that I will stand up in. I will be the only bridesmaid, so I don’t have to worry about matching other vintage dresses. This past weekend I rummaged around my vintage dress collection and picked a few contenders. Let’s have a look! (Thanks for taking the pictures, Mr. Taffy!)

First up, a light blue mini dress with a matching jacket:

t1

t2

Wow, that’s short. If I wear this, that jacket is staying closed! Eeep.

t3

My “this dress is too short” sad face.

Ok, our next contestant is a fun party dress. Can you tell that I like blue? ;)

t4

t5

The skirt is so much fun!!!

The black sweater that I bought for my engagement photos would look great with this, and it would help me stay warm!

t6

OK, Contestant 3. Very red, very ruffly.

t7

Mr. Taffy would not have a hard time finding me in the dark! I remember my parents wanting us to wear “safe” (blindingly bright) colors when we went out trick-or-treating.

The black sweater doesn’t work so great with this dress… the ruffles make it all bunchy around my shoulders. Mr. T called me lumpy. :(

t8

Be nice, Mr. T!

Which vintage dress should I wear?

I would say fun blue party dress WITHOUT the cardigan - OR drape the cardigan over the shoulders (and if possible use one of those old fashioned sweater clips with the chain that keeps your sweater on you). I personally think the cardigan doesn’t look *quite* right wearing it normally with the dress

I picked the blue party dress, but I agree with lilagrayce… not a huge fan of the sweater.

I third the above comments.

And I fourth those comments. I LOVE the blue party dress, but the black sweater does look a little off. I think a lighter colored sweater draped over the shoulders would look fantastic!

@lilagrayce: Ditto! I love the idea w/ the sweater chain/pin thing :)

I pick the blue party dress! Maybe it’s just the picture, but I agree with the above and am unsure of the black cardigan. If it looks awesome in person, wear it!

I think the fun blue party dress would look uber-cute with a white cardigan - or a white shawl/pashmina? :)

“my vintage dress collection” that fact alone makes you simply amazing!

I realllly lovelove the red dress- I’m totally into ruffles right now.

Definitely the blue party dress. It looks like something a ’50s bridesmaid would wear!

The second one, for sure. Although the red one would be cute with a wide belt or something.

Oh, forgot to add this part….white vintage knuckle gloves would be super cute with the second blue dress!

I like the blue party dress, but I think the contrast between the colors is too harsh…could you wear a different sweater?

You look sad in #1, #3 is a bit… much for a wedding.

LOVE #2. I wish it was mine! You look radiant in that color!

Wear the blue party dress, but find a cardigan that compliments the dress.

On the dresses alone, I kind of love the ruffled dress (which kind of reminds me of the Zac Posen BM dress that Miranda wore in the SATC movie), but for this occasion, I vote for the blue party dress.

#2! #2!! It’s adorable. You’ll be yanking down #1 all night, and when you sit down…waaaay too short.

the party dress w/ some little white gloves and a white cartigan (can’t spell today, sorry) would be super cute, but when else will you get to wear a tangello dress with giant ruffles in public?!

Your sister says, “don’t listen to those people! Pick the 2nd dress!”

And I agree. You look great in that shade of blue! And it looks so good with the black sweater.

She also recalls wearing reflective tape on Halloween and carrying light sticks one year. :)

Oh taffy, you are just so adorable! I hope you went with dress #2. And you are always free to stick in the mail and send it my way when you are tired of it….

Where are you buying all of these adorable dresses?

@Miss Blush:
@Mrs. Avocado: Thanks, Ladies! I love my vintage dresses, and have been collecting vintage since I was 14. Some I found at thrift stores, some I found at vintage stores, and when I was a sophmore in high school I really lucked out- my art teacher used to own a vintage clothing store before teaching, and she gave me tons of stuff!!! Dress #2 came from her backstock. I was so excited! :)

Thanks everyone for your comments, I’m going with dress #2, and am still debating the sweater issue. ;) I can’t wait for the wedding!!! :)
