Color Coordinating My Non-Bridal Party

October 15th, 2008 @ 2:46 pm by Mrs. Sushi

I lightly hit on our lack of a bridal party in a previous post.

I’ve been thinking and talking to my bestests who will be in attendance at our wedding and thought, well, just because they technically won’t be my bridesmaids doesn’t mean that I still don’t want photos of them on our wedding day. As my best friends, they still plan on being there for me that morning and will be getting ready with me. The only thing that doesn’t make them the traditional bridesmaid is they won’t be walking down the aisle and they won’t be wearing matching dresses. And in all reality, if I was having traditional bridesmaids, I really don’t think I’d make them wear the matching dresses anyways. I really like the look of bridesmaids wearing the same colors, but different dresses that flatter them and are more their style.

That being said, would it be totally bridezilla of me to ask my bestests to wear dresses of their choosing with a tad of red in it? This could be a red dress, a white dress with a red pattern, a red dress with pattern. I really don’t care, just as long as there is some red in it. I was thinking that it would be nice to get photos of my bestests and I on my wedding day and have us be somewhat color coordinated, rather than someone wearing green and the person next to them wearing maroon. I’m looking for something like this:

I ran the idea by 3 of my best friends, and they all seem to be on board with the idea. Bestest A, went out and bought a dress the same day I told her about the idea. She found this dress at Forever 21 for less than $30!!
I’m hoping with the holidays right around the corner it will be easier to find red dresses/dresses with red in it. Got any leads for me?

my sorority sister did something similar when she married. actually she didn’t even tell us exactly why she wanted us to all wear blue until the big day. they were married the day before in what i guess was a iranian/pakastani tradition. we were there, and they celebrated afterwards. she also wanted a more traditional western reception, which happened the following day. we didn’t find out until that western reception that we were in fact her “bridemaids” when she requested that we take pictures and walk down the staircase before her lined up with his friends. she swore she told us why she wanted us in blue, but she didn’t since it was a surprise to all of us.

I’m doing the exact same thing…and the MS photo of the pinks was one of my inspirations. Mine is slightly more confusing, as i’m having the girls pick shades of pink & peach, versus one color. I want it be tonal in nature.

If you think you’re leaning in that direction, i suggest getting a bunch of ribbon in the colors you like, and number them. Then give these to your girls and when they find a dress you like they can say “it’s like #2. trust me…it helps with the confusion. Good luck!

I think that it would be really nice if your non-maids wore a hint of a color. I love the two examples that you gave (especially the first one).

Oops! I meant the second example with the black & white.

I think this is the direction that bridesmaid dresses are heading. Most of your girls will be able to go out and get a new dress (who doesn’t want to do that!) and they will get to feel a little bit special on your wedding day. I don’t think anyone can complain about that!

This is exactly what I was thinking of doing, Miss Sushi! No bridesmaids, but good friends wearing dresses in a color I suggest, who will be with me in the morning and for pictures. Glad I’m not alone with this unconventional thinking! :o)

I was thinking of going the non-bridesmaids route as well, ever since Jenna Bush did it and called it a “house party”. My fiancé will do the same thing with his friends. I have a couple of questions, though: how do you explain to people what you have in mind, and what do you call the non-wedding party? Perhaps I will have everyone’s name in the program alphabetically, men & women together…it appeals to my sense of equality. How did you all ask your friends to be non-bridesmaids?
