Creamy Cake Alternative

October 15th, 2008 @ 11:27 am by Mrs. Meatball

I have a confession to make. I regularly lust for another man. I saw him again last night, and wow—did he ever satisfy my hunger! He even seduced Mr. Meatball, too. That’s just how temptingly irresistible his powers are…

Meet my 2nd love, the Beard Papa.

If you’ve not yet tasted his delicious cream puffs—then you haven’t quite lived. They’re the perfect confection. Fresh, buttery, crunchy puffy goodness, filled with succulent, velvety vanilla cream, and sprinkled with powdered sugar… these puppies are the best cream puff in all of creampuffdom.

Last night, as Mr. Meatball and I licked the last traces of vanilla bean from our happy lips, we contemplated trading in a traditional wedding cake for a tower of Beard Papa’s finest.

mb1.jpg
See? How can a girl resist?

We’d still have the groom’s cake for those who either insist on cake (fair enough), or dislike cream puffs (unthinkable!).

It would probably be more budget-friendly, and it definitely represents our tastes better than a cake would. Plus, we’ve already come up with a few adorable “cake-cutting” alternatives to do with these delights.

What do you think? To puff, or not to puff?

Beard Papa’s is sick. Just amazing. I’m in NYC this week, and plan on stopping in there tonight–we are lacking in the midwest, and it’s a must have when I’m in NYC. I say go for it.

To cream puff or not to Cream Puff..
I am biased. We aren’t having a wedding cake (much to my mother’s dismay)- so any alternative that is yummy I am all for!

TO CREAM PUFF!!! DO IT! (And maybe provide some ice cream???)

I’ve never had a Beard Papa and it’s all anyone can ever talk about on Yelp San Francisco! Even Mr. Peng has had one! I suck. But anyway, I say… to cream puff! You guys could build quite an impressive display with them!

Love that idea. We’re serving breakfast for dinner at our wedding next summer (omelette bar, crepe station, cereal buffet, bagels, etc), and for our cake we’re going to have a mountain of French Toast and Belgian Waffles. Will it be pretty? No. Will it be delicious? You bet. I’ve never felt attached to the idea of a wedding cake, so I figured we may as well save the money and go for something that we actually like.

you could do something similar to what I did for a bride who wanted a Hostess treats cake for her grooms cake…just get a fairly inexpensive cake from the grocery store or bakery and then cover it with cream puffs. That way, you get cake and puffs :)

You can see the pictures here: http://limoncello-style.blogspot.com/2008/10/sweet-thing.html

Definitely puff! My FI and I aren’t huge fans of cake, so we’re going with either cheesecake or ice cream cake instead. Why have a cake if neither of us like it? (plus, cheesecake is delicious!!)

i LOVE beard papas! i can eat like 5 in one sitting. that being said… they taste best when freshly made. Have you ever tasted one that has been sitting out or refrigerated for a few hours? Not as yummy… which might be something to think about since your “cake” is usualyl refrigerated and then sitting on the table a few hours before anyone actually gets to eat it, right? in any case, it gives you an excuse to buy some and have a yummy experiment!

we (and by we, I mean He… all 180 of them!) folded origami boxes for individual puffs and had them handed out by our waiters after dinner:

You could have it set up like a croquenbouch.
Croquenbouch - its a tower of profiteroles held together with toffee (quite spectacular). After the cutting the croquenbouch each of your guests can get one or two profiteroles and serve hot chocolate sauce on the side and ice cream.
Just use the creame puffs instead, there isn’t much difference and the cake is devine and served at many Italian and French weddings.

See the link below.

I love love love beard papas. Have you tried their new ice cream puffs? Luscious. The only worry I’d have about serving BPs at weddings is that they might get soggy? I’ve only had them in Hong Kong, where they give it to you right after they fill it, so it’s the perfect combo of crispy on the puff and creaminess on the inside. But let’s just say I wouldn’t turn down a soggy BP. ;-)

Papa beard’s is a million times better than any slice of cake (wedding or not) and day (wedding or not).

Go with the cream puffs.
