Mrs. Martini's Picture
Mrs. Martini, New Jersey Age and Occupation: 30, Telecom by day, Superhero by night Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Investments & Finance by day, Hip hop dancer by night Engagement Date: May 24, 2008 Wedding Date: March, 2009 Blogging Since: August 18, 2008 Venue: The Venetian About Me: Things that make me happy: Haribo Happy Cola gummies, TV shows on DVD, buying books although I never read them, 80’s rock ballads, ramen, and of course Mr. Martini! He is the calm, logical and number crunching finance guy. I can’t even multiply double digit numbers in my head and I am so indecisive that trying to choose between light green or slightly lighter green paper stresses me out (Wedding planning is going to be soooo much fun). We both find great joy in nabbing great seats at the movie theater for a blockbuster movie on opening weekend, and we are both absolutely crazy about snowboarding. And he loves to cook, I love to eat!
About Mrs. Martini

I decided that as of today, I want to make my own thank you cards. You can almost see me standing underneath a ray of sunlight streaming down from the heavens, wide eyed at my revelation, as angels sing Hallelujah!

And then… you notice that I’m standing at the edge of a cliff just about ready to fall off.

I know our wedding is still about five months away, but I had this sudden urge to… craft… so I had to share my big news. Actually, this urge was more like an itch that started a while back when my FSIL hand-made a thank you card for me:

s168754

I totally fell in love with the card because the picture of her with her son (and our future ring boy) seemed so much more personal to me.  Although she insisted it didn’t take much time at all to make it, I thought it was cuter than any old Hallmark. However, it never occurred to me that I could make something like this myself.

Then my itch turned into full-blown poison ivy. You see, several weeks ago I saw Miss Eggplant’s personal blog for the first time, and almost fell over from the cuteness of her cards (seriously—go take a look! You will die). She kept talking about stamping this and stamping that and I really had no idea what she was talking about. Then it hit me. Oh my gosh. People use stamps. To make pretty things.

At first I just stalked her blog like a crazy woman. Then I scoured stamping websites for days. Using Amazon’s “universal wish list“, I added cute stamp after cute stamp, a Cuttlebug, and countless embossers to my Amazon wish list. Just for the record, for some reason I love adding things to wish lists; that way I don’t forget I want them, and just in case I can’t ever find those things again, I have record of everything. Better yet, sometimes I go back to the list months later and wonder why I wanted any of it at all. Regardless, I stopped myself from buying anything at first because I saw that this could easily become a very expensive and time consuming obsession, and I am barely getting any wedding planning done as it is.

During an impromptu trip to Michaels today however, I went a little nuts. I saw stamps and paper in a new light. I always loved this store, but all of a sudden, I knew what to look for, when previously, I’ve felt a bit lost. I recognized tools now and I knew what a “die” was, and it wasn’t a threat (har har). Then I came across these:

s16875401

40 plain cards and envelopes, on sale at 2 packs for $10. Then I suddenly realized something. Why don’t I make… cards… for our wedding? Why don’t I make… THANK YOU cards… for our wedding? No two cards would be the same. It would be a personal labor of love. And yes it’s a lot of work, but once I get the hang of it, won’t it get easier? Can you just SEE me basking in my epiphany in the middle of the paper aisle at Michaels? I bought two packages of plain cards and envelopes, lots of card stock, a few stamps, some ribbon, and other minor supplies to get me started. When I got home I called Mr. Martini to see what he thought of the idea, and he actually loved it!

And so, my craft adventure begins. I really can’t wait to make my first card—I decided to send the first one to my FSIL along with a copy of Twilight. I promised to buy her a copy because (gasp) she hasn’t read it yet (I know).

I just hope it doesn’t suck… and I end up falling over that cliff.

Any tips for a new DIY’er like myself?  Are there supplies that I can’t live without?

for inspiration go to http://www.splitcoaststampers.com

There is where I found my invite & favor designs…a lot of it is Stampin’ Up! (yay, Eggplant is as obsessed with coordinating colors as I am!) but you can find other stuff there, too just be careful…as you can see it is addicting!

glue dots. i do lots of stamping, and glue dots are a million times easier and less messy than glue sticks.

my other suggestion is embossing powder. Its not that much more difficult to emboss rather than plain stamping, but it always impresses the non-crafty types.

Just start making them early, as in, make sure they are all done BEFORE the wedding, because you don’t want the extra stress of having to craft your thank you cards on top of having to write out all the thank yous in a timely fashion. I don’t recall how big your wedding is, but I had well over 100 thank you cards to write, and I made all the cards myself, as well… it took a long, long time. I was so relieved that I had all the cards done before the wedding, otherwise, people would have been waiting MONTHS for their thank you notes.

If you don’t think you’ll have time with all your other wedding planning, why not start smaller? Maybe start by just doing the thank you cards for your shower gifts, or thank you cards for your attendants (bridemaids/groomsmen/family members) and decide after you have made all those if you really want to get involved with making cards for everyone.

I just went through the same new obsession with stamping a few months ago. I’m now subscribed to so many stamping blogs, it’s ridiculous! A discovery I made because I knew I couldn’t afford to buy all the new stamping supplies I wanted is that a lot of people in the stamping community give away blog candy. All you do is leave a comment on their blog and they use a random number generator and you win free stuff! I’ve actually won like 10 blog candies this year and it’s helped me to get some random stamping supplies I wouldn’t buy otherwise.

When I first got into it I thought I would make all my thank you cards too, but with a guest list of 250 people, I decided that I would go nuts and never enjoy card making ever again. Instead I found some thank you cards in the $1 section at Michaels, used a 20% off coupon, and got thank you cards at 8 cents per card. Yay!

I agree with the #3 comment about starting small. I made thank you cards for my college graduation, and it can be very time consuming.

My tip is to use light weight embellishments. Anything to bulky or heavy can… A: get stuck in a mail machine, or B: require extra postage.

A couple of mine required extra postage, and I hadn’t realized it. I felt horrible that my family was having to pay the extra 5 cents (or whatever) to get my card.

Good luck, and have fun!

I totally missed this entry! :-) Thanks for writing such sweet words! I was wondering where all the hits on my blog were coming from. Haha.

As for tips about making cards? Hmmm. I think the easiest way to make a card look good is to pick a good color combo upfront. That is key. Once you have a good color combo, experimenting is easier. Oh, and use lots of texture in your cards. For example, crumpled paper + a strip of ribbon + a metal brad. Texture adds interest!

And things I can’t live without: Tape runner (the kind that dispenses like white out tape), foam dimensional stickers (to make images pop), tons of ribbon in every color imaginable, and a bone folder to score my cards in half. Scoring makes cards look so much neater.

Have fun! Paper crafting is really addicting. :-) And be sure to post the cards when you’re done!
