The Table Name Conundrum

October 15th, 2008 @ 11:59 am by Ms Fondue

Besides the exhausting venue hunt, the number one thing that has been most difficult for us has been deciding the table names.

We’re having assigned seating, so naming or numbering the tables is a must. I always liked the idea of having names for the tables instead of the traditional numbers, and we figured it was a good way to work in some more of our interests and personalities. But agreeing on the names? Impossible.

My first idea was different words for the color ‘red’, since it’s our accent color. For example, “Rouge”, “Scarlet”, “Crimson”, “Cherry”, “Claret”, etc. Mr. Fondue said no.

My next idea was video game couples. It was a take on the popular “famous couples” idea, except would be representing the geek in our geek chic wedding. We’d have the “Link and Zelda” table, the “Mario and Peach” table, and the “Locke and Celes” table. (My favorite was “Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man” but Mr. Fondue tried to argue that they weren’t actually a couple.) He suggested expanding this idea to include movies as well, so we could have the “Han Solo and Leia” table and the “Wesley and Buttercup” table. I went as far as to make some mock-up table cards for this, but then Mr. Fondue decided he didn’t like it at all.

He had decided that the tables should be places. His only suggestion was planets from Star Wars. I pointed out that, while he was an enormous Star Wars fan, I had only seen the original trilogy once or twice, and it wasn’t very representative of the both of us.

Going with the places idea, I proposed to use streets we had lived on. Like “Melrose”, where my college dorm was, or “Echo Valley”, where he had lived with his friends. He liked that they were place names, but still vetoed it.

He wasn’t offering up any suggestions other than the Star Wars planets idea, so I went back to numbers. We could have years for the numbers, and put pictures of ourselves from those years on the table cards. He thought that it was cute, but didn’t think there would be enough decent pictures of him as a kid for us to use.

Then I suggested finding numbers that were somewhat significant to us, like the house number, or a license plate number, and taking pictures of us beside them. He was iffy about it, and I could tell it wasn’t his favorite idea.

At some point, I also suggested dressing our cats up in wedding attire and taking pictures of them with numbers. Mr. Fondue just thought I was nuts.

So, we went back to names.

My next proposal was for cities we had lived in, or were somewhat connected to us. We had gone to Atlanta on our sort-of first date, so that could be one. We could also use the town we were going to visit on our honeymoon. I just received a “meh” from Mr. Fondue.

Finally, one day I showed him Mrs. Hummingbird’s table names. He LOVED this idea, especially the idea of each person having a different character from the game. We made up some rules, like it had to be a series of at least 3 or more games (so they aren’t TOO obscure), and we would alternate choosing which games we wanted, so that we would both be well represented.

Thus, our table names were born. Here is what we have narrowed it down to so far, but we may need one or two more:

  • Super Mario Bros/Mario
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Final Fantasy
  • Dragon Warrior/Quest
  • King’s Quest
  • The Sims
  • Mega Man
  • Metal Gear
  • Tales
  • Castlevania
  • Fire Emblem
  • Metroid
  • Zork
  • Punch-Out!!
  • Wii (as in Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Play, etc.)—this is for our sweetheart table, and our Miis will be our characters

Will you have creative/unique table names?  What will they be?

We are getting married at a brew pub so we thought about doing beer styles.

Pale ale
Weissen
Double Bach
porter
etc.

But it got to be to much for my plate, so we stuck with numbers on our e- pics.

All I know so far is we’re going to use our engagement photos (and possibly some other photos throughout our relationship) as the main focus, and either add numbers or names. If we do numbers we were also going to add a love quote. Sounds like you guys went back and forth, I sure hope my hubs (eventhough we’re not married yet this is what i call him lol) isn’t so indecisive.

We met at the Kentucky Derby, so we are going to name the tables after items/popular associations with the Derby (i.e. Churchill Downs, Seersucker, Louisville,etc.). Our sweetheart table will be named “First Kiss” since we shared our first kiss at the Derby as well. We’re also going to serve mint juleps at the cocktail hour to continue the theme and to keep it subtle but sweet. We will have signs explaining our choices at the bar/escort table. I love the trend of naming tables creatively and I am sure your guests will appreciate yours:)

I like the symbolism of “Wii” for the newlyweds sweetheart tables — very cute!

I saw on a wedding website once that each table was a number, but the number was a picture of one of the members of the couple or both members standing next to that number during one of their adventures (i.e. table 1 would be a picture of one of us standing by the floor 1 sign from when we stayed on the first floor at Harrah’s on our AC trip).

I love seeing how you manage to mix geekiness into an elegant wedding. The table themese are fantastic. I’m going to skip the seating chart for my wedding, otherwise I would probably do something similar.

We’re still struggling with this - but I must say the photos of your cats in wedding attire would have totally won the contest if I had a vote! I wonder if Paco would stand for it!

We wanted to include our dog in the wedding so I photoshopped our dog into different places around the globe, and even added accessories. I think they turned out fabulous, I can’t wait to show them off :) He’s even wearing a sombrero and carrying a maraca in Mexico! haha.

we’re doing shows we’ve seen…our table will be Romeo & Juliet, but there will be less serious ones, like Beastie Boys, etc!

We’re doing our favorite restaurants. We’re big foodies and are trying to get a picture of us at each one… although I’m not sure a Miami and Mexico trip are possible!

We did something similarly geeky - we’re naming all of our tables after Sci Fi TV Shows and movies. So we have:

Harry Potter, The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Batman, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, etc!

That’s so funny! We went through pretty much the same thing as you. Every good idea had a valid reason as to why it wouln’t work.

We tried:
Streets we lived on
Grades
Movies

Finally while walking out of our venue one day FI says, “I know…CHOCOLATES!”

I thought it was cute and heavens knows there’s nothing edible in this world that we like more than chocolate (and pizza and ice cream :-) )

With that in mind the sweetheart table is the Kisses table and we have; Snickers, Milky Way, Twix, Butterfinger…oh, you get it. We have 13 total. And yes, our theme is chocolate of course so if you’re sitting at the Snikers table, there will be Snickers bars there for you to indulge in. If Snickers is your favorite and you’re at the Peanut Butter cups table…well then ya gotta mingle and mosy over to the Snickers table.

Our candy buffet is all made of seven different chocolates and our late night treat is….a chocolate fountain.

Anyone have any Imodium??

I haven’t even started to think about this, but I have a feeling we’re going to end up just using numbers. :-)

For my sister’s wedding, I drove around our hometown and took pics up-close of houses/stores numbers. Like her first job, relatives’ homes, her orthadontist, etc. I got them printed 5″x5″ in black-and-white on metallic photo paper. Her wedding was in his hometown, so this was a way to incorporate hers.

Out of your ideas, I have to say - I want to see at Wesley and Buttercup table!! (hehhe - I just told this to my MOH and she said “inconceivable!” ahh - i love being a geek with good friends)

We have spent a significant about of our time at beaches swimming, surfing and diving - so it was an easy choice for us - Beaches of significance to us. Originally, I had a DIY idea of actually bringing in sand from each of those beaches to work into the centerpiece… and then it occurred to me that it was going to be a LOT of work for something no one else would notice, and I would forget about on the day of.

Amazing. We’re doing something very similar, though we haven’t quite nailed down the specifics yet. Our relationship was built on geeky things (it started with Star Wars and tabletop roleplaying and expanded from there) so we definitely wanted to show some of that in our reception. We’ll be doing table themed after our shared interests, including video games, various sci-fi tv and movie series’, tabletop games, and who knows what else :)

One of my favorite ideas is to do years that meant something in your life. For example, have your birth year (1981 as the table #) with a picture of you as a baby. Table 1941 - have a picture of your grandparent’s wedding. Table 2000 - have each of your high school graduation shots. Table 2008 - have a picture from your proposal. For the sweetheart table, use the wedding date with a picture of each of you before the ceremony.

The best part about these is that you can put them chronologically. That way people aren’t wandering around looking for the “merlot” table (which usually happens with named tables instead of numbered tables).

I’m loving all of your table names! Everyone is so creative. :)

@Tea: Haha. Would you believe this isn’t even all of them? I actually cut out quite a bit, such as concerts we’ve been to (and using table cards that looked like concert tickets), places in video games, and some other ideas I had.

@Starry-Eyed Barefoot Bride: The Wesley and Buttercup table was going to be ours. ;)

My sister and her fiance both have a masters in library science (they met in class), so each table name will be a literary genre (romance, fantacy, horror, mystery…). It’s a great way to incorporate something personal without having a library at the reception.

Your FH sounds as picky as mine hehe :)
If I can make a suggestion, one of the hardest thing about having tables w/o # is finding them when you’re a guest. I would suggest make a map/key or also numbering them :)

We named our tables after subjects and our signs looked like little chalkboards: math, biology, chemistry, physics, compsci.

We’re going to do a ‘This Day in History’. We’re getting married on May 2 which doesn’t seem to be a very important day…but there’s a few interesting ones like David Beckham’s birthday (my favorite…haha).

We are getting married on November 8th and we have many themes. To tie together our love of movies, we are using songs from movies as our processional music. On the programs, there is the “name that tune” game for our ceremony. The answers will be revealed at the reception as the table markers.
The Princess Bride
Robin Hood Prince of Thieves
Shrek
Star Wars
Dirty Dancing
Phantom of the Opera
Lord of the Rings
A Knight’s Tale
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

You ladies are so creative. I really love the chocolate idea as I really luvs some chocolate and cookies

Our theme is the Harlem Renaissance, so each of our tables will be named after a famous person from that era. Josephine Baker, Billie Holiday, Cab Calloway, etc.
