A Gentle Reminder

October 16th, 2008 @ 3:01 pm by Mrs. Taffy

A month or so before Mr. Taffy and I moved in together, I bought him a housewarming gift. It was a gift that would keep on giving… How to Cook Everything Vegetarian, by Mark Bittman. We love to cook together, and he had been eying the book for a while.

The following week I was browsing on Etsy and found the perfect complement to Mr. Taffy’s Housewarming gift!

reminder.jpg

Oh yes. A gentle, screenprinted reminder to do the dishes. Oh, was I happy. You see, Mr. Taffy is not naturally inclined to do dishes, especially after each meal. You may recall that he was washing dishes right before he proposed. That alone made me suspicious of his behavior that night! I need a clean sink- this is my worst compulsion- I can’t stand to have dishes piled up. It freaks me out if I can’t see the drain! Our new place doesn’t have a dishwasher, which made me a bit nervous about sharing a kitchen (ok, sharing a sink!).

The technical style of the gocco print is really up Mr. T’s alley! (mua ha ha)

This lovely screenprint is not the only of its kind. That’s right, you could order it as part of a set! Can you guess the next annoying house-sharing habit?

reminder2.jpg

Mmmm, yep. A common issue with living together. Mr. T is actually really great with this one, so I only ordered the kitchen print. The last in the set is for the really picky people out there:

reminder3.jpg

Yes, one hanger (one!!!) is turned the opposite direction from the rest. I don’t think I ever noticed this sort of thing until I worked at Victoria’s Secret during college, when they made us switch all of the hangers in the right direction. Ah, it’s the little things in life, right?

These prints were ordered from the etsy seller 3P-3, who is not active on Esty at this time. I contacted her before posting this, however, and she told me that I could post a link to her blog, if any of you have questions on these prints.

What method have you used to gently bring up the subject of annoying house habits with your partner?

PS- How to Cook Everything is AMAZING!!! We both highly recommend it. :)

i should really invest in a cook book. is it really that awesome? what if you’re a beginner?

mr. martini lovessss to cook. and i love being the sous chef, becuase i can’t cook. but i love chopping stuff up, while the mr hates the prep work. so i guess we work out in the end. the only bad thing? he refuses to do the dishes! i think he only did the dishes once in the two years I’ve known him. we don’t even live together and only see each other on the weekends, but when i get there Friday or saturday, there’s a full sink of dishes waiting for me.

if you saw that you’d want to run away and hide in a closet.

Mr. D is the clean one, im the free-spirited messy one. Im ok with using the dryer as another drawer for a week (so i dont have to fold…and if its wrinkled i just turn it on) and using the dishwasher as a cabinet. We are so very different. Seriously- even his closet is coordinated by color and type of shirt.
Im usually the one who leaves lights on, dishes in the sink, old food in the fridge…..Im a gem, aint I??

Those prints are hilarious. When my now-FI moved to town (still had his own apt. but was at my house a lot), I got so frustrated by the toilet seat up nonsense that I wrote in really big letters on a post-it “PUT ME DOWN” and put it on the underside of the toilet seat, so he would see it while doing his business. Worked like a charm, I even took it off while cleaning a while ago and forgot to put it back on, and no problems :)

We are still fighting the dishes in the sink battle– it’s not a stopping point on the way to the dishwasher! Just put them in the dishwasher already!

I love these prints. I need ones that say the following:

- socks do not belong in the crevices of the couch
- pants do not belong on the floor
- towels do not belong on the toilet seat

I really need that toilet print, as my fiance has a hard time remembering this, especially when he gets up in the middle of the night to do his business, then I end up falling into the toilet!

Oh, I love Mark Bittman’s books!

@ Miss Dumpling– I’m the messier one too, at least about the dishes. I think my guy’s pet peeve has got to be the amount of hair I shed. I do clean it up, but some still manages to get by me. In the end, he tolerates it quite well, since he likes long hair!

oh my god, those are too funny. mr. cc ALWAYS puts his clothes on the hangers the wrong way (i guess i should be glad he puts his clothes on hangers at all), which drives me nuts and i immediately have to switch them to face the right way. he does this with the toilet paper roll too!

speaking of toilets, he has not only flushed his glasses down the toilet once, but twice. and last week he flushed a bottle of acne medicine down the toilet without realizing it, so when i went to pee, the toilet overflowed and i got attacked with urine and had to call the plumber to take the toilet off and fish out his acne bottle (2 hours and a $300 plumber bill later)!! so yeah, i am strongly trying to reinforce the PUT THE DAMN SEAT DOWN rule.

ahhhh i totally fit in the “really picky” category! i HATE hangers facing in, when i was a little girl i would re-arrange my mom’s closets!! The toilet on the other hand, doesn’t bother me much. Crazy, i know.

I actually dont have problems with any of these pictures! My fiance puts the seat down every time and he actually made sure I had the sink cleared! And I love him for it and I love him for being him. :)

@Miss Martini: Oh yes, the book is really that awesome. There are tons of easy to understand recipes, and he lists all kinds of variations on them, with page numbers so it is super easy to find everything. He also has “How to Cook Everything”, if you don’t want the vegetarian version. Get the book, you will love it!

@Miss Meatball: Yay!!! This book has been so helpful. My favorite thing about it is all of the variations that he suggests. :)

@Miss Dumpling: I have to admit, I am really bad about leaving food in the fridge!!! Then I get scared of it, so I just try to ignore it. It’s so bad, that is my worst roommate quality for sure!!!

@Miss Hot Cocoa: Hmmm, do I detect a good idea for a custom housewarming gift for Mr. Hot Cocoa? I love how these prints look like a manual. It would be hilarious if you knew an illustrator who could make Mr. HC a “manual” outlining all of those things you listed. Could be the lady version of the MTV Cribs parody that your friend did! :)

@Adrienne: I’m glad that you like them, I was excited to share them with you guys. :)

@Miss Candy Corn: Wow, glasses?!? I am glad that Mr. T is so good about the toilet seats, but the dishes… augghhhh.
