Shall We Dance?

October 16th, 2008 @ 11:50 am by Mrs. Ballet Flat

You know the saying, “dance like no one is watching”? Well, uhm, I only dance when no one is watching. It’s really awkward to think that 150 of our closest family and friends are going to watch Mr. Ballet Flat and I *gulp* dance. My idea of a dance is the ever-so-popular sprinkler, but I know that it’s not necessarily the most traditional thing to do.

See? P-Diddy even does it. So it’s GOTTA be cool, right?

Anyway, I’m a little nervous about this dance. So much, that I encouraged Mr. Ballet Flat and I to apply for TLC’s Rock the Reception. :)

I haven’t gotten a call or email yet, but hey, there’s still hope for us right? Right?!

I know there’s not a chance in heck that they will call us, so I’m going to need some courage to just appear on the big day. I’m hoping the adrenaline and copious amounts of happiness helps!

As far as music goes, Mr. Ballet Flat and I are torn between two songs, it seems (last we talked about it, at least).

Here’s what I like:

Here’s what he likes:

Well, I kind of like his too, but I’m not sure what to think. This Aerosmith song comes from my favorite movie EVER (Armageddon). I played that tape (yep, good ol’ VHS) so much it’s now broken.

So, hive, what do you think? Should I bend to Mr. Ballet Flat’s liking or push for some Steven Tyler?

Was choosing your first dance song easy?

Is there a way for you to compromise? I had my fiance choose our song because it was one of the few areas that he made a suggestion, rather than agreeing with what I had already chosen. Pretty much anything that he suggested, unless I really hated the idea, I went along with so that he had some input since I was in control of much of the day.

I don’t see your song as just being romantic…maybe bc Liv Tyler was the actress, but I think it could be your Father/Daughter dance, too! I agree that if you man has little influence, you should let him pick something. If you don’t like the Father/Daughter, dance, what about using yours as your last slow dance?
Also, if you aren’t comfortable dancing in front of others, 5 mins is going to feel REALLY long.

I had a similar problem with this decision - there are a lot of songs that I love and find romantic, and there are a few songs that my fiance loves and finds romantic, but there wasn’t much middleground. We didn’t have an “our song” to go with, or any really special moments that happened to romantic music or anything.

So instead of trying to take one of my songs or his songs and just pretending its important to both of us, we’re looking for a new song that fits us well and is good to dance to. And that can be our song from now on.

My sis and BIL danced to the Aerosmith song… its a sweet song and I think your FI would probably be honored that you chose his favorite!

Oh ma ga, we almost applied to be on that show too! Mr. MB has visions of us dancing lyrical hip hop but I really need choreography to pull that off. Ultimately he determined he wouldn’t like to have the wedding be part of a tv show (just his opinion) so we’re still lost about what to do! Good luck! i LOVE Tabitha and Napoleon from SYTYCD!

@cannotwait: Oh, I know those 5 minutes are going to drag…but hopefully Mr. Ballet Flat will make me laugh or something. I’m hoping!
@Miss Meatball: How cool! I’m sure we won’t be chosen…what are the chances? We applied months ago too….sigh…it’s ok! BTW, I love those choreographers as well! :)

the only thing I can say is the savage garden song is a lot faster then the aerosmith song and maybe its a little too fast ?

I think your two options come from the list of typical first dance songs. Why not try and come up with something a little more unique? I’m using Otis Redding’s “That’s How Strong My Love Is.”

If I personally had to choose between the two songs, I’d absolutely go for Savage Garden. I think the Aerosmith song is actually a little TOO slow. It’s also kinda a cliche - sorry, but I just keep picturing a prom glass with “Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” etched on a champagne glass with LHS Prom 2008.

We had a super hard time deciding on a song. I had wanted “At Last” by Etta James for years but then when I started getting really into wedding planning and realized how common it was I decided against it. We tried to agree on about 20 other songs before we finally chose “That’s How Strong My Love Is” by Otis Redding - ironically, a very popular first dance song itself!

You’ve got lots of time to decide so I say you step away from that decision and focus on something else for a couple of weeks and when you come back to it you may have a clearer view on the issue. I think both songs are lovely and so you really can’t lose, whichever song you go with!
