About Mrs. Blush

My Project Runway Day

October 16th, 2008 @ 10:02 am by Mrs. Blush

Ok no I didn’t meet Heidi or Tim (whom I totally heart), no invite to the tents at Bryant Park, not even a walk through Parsons, BUT… I did spend two glorious hours at MOOD!

For those of you who don’t keep up with Project Runway (hopefully because something impossible has prevented it), MOOD is the fabric store that supplies all the designers with their materials.

Well, two days ago I did MOOD and I will never go back. It’s literally 3 (I think) floors of rolls and rolls of fabric - everything you can imagine.

I decided to check out MOOD after realizing the super cute wedding trend: head pieces! I knew I wanted one for our e-pics and maybe for the reception, but I didn’t know where I could find the perfect one. :) So yep, I decided to make mine.

The first 30 minutes was spent just gawking at it all. The next 30 minutes was spent feeling totally self conscious and embarrassed about being a commoner amongst the designing gods. Feeling ridiculously uncomfortable and out of my element, I mustered up the courage to ask “Where can I find the tulle?”

After that it was all easyyy sailing. :)

Well ok enough talk. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves. Enjoy! And remember - I have no experience whatsoever with this - which means you can do it too! (lol I sound like a thighmaster commercial)

Hairband using the white tulle. I basically cut the tulle into a large square/circle, bunched the center of it and added little folds to create the gathered look.

I plan on buying thin hairbands and glue-gunning the pieces to the bands

Excuse my hand- I had some pimple cream on my forehead (you prob didn’t want to see that)

flower on top of tulle - I cut the tulle into circles & layered them. (I haven’t used this green flower for anything yet.)

I cut pieces of chiffon and did the same thing - layering.

Then I sewed the back in a pucker like stitch…

I never throw away scraps because I know there will always be something useful for them

This is another piece I made using off white fabric & the scraps from the tulle. I basically stuffed the tulle inside each flower and sewed the bottom all up

I think this could work great as a brooch-like piece on a sweater

holy cow you are super talented! Next time I am in NYC I am definitely going to check out mood. The best we have here is Jo-Ann fabrics and their stuff can be kinda lame.

Cute, I love what you made!!! :)

When I was in fashion school, I had one illustration instructor who would ONLY accept swatches from Mood. He would actually call people out if they didn’t go there, it was remarkable that he could tell! (maybe he could just read us by our worried looks, he was pretty mean!).

Luckily they were really student friendly and always gave us lots of swatches. I miss that place, I was so excited to see Project Runway go there! Daytona Trim is excellent for ribbons & embellishments!

Miss Blush, you are totally cute! :) That sounds so fun. I wish I could go to New York and check it out. Guess I’ll have to be content with JoAnn’s. Sigh.

for chicago brides, Vogue Fabrics (one downtown, one in Evanston) is pretty fab. I’m always huddled over in their clearance fabrics.

I haven’t found any great fabric stores in DC yet though.. and these pieces are so lovely!

Fabulous! I really must hit up Mood next time I’m in the city, not because I have any ability to make anything, but just to stalk Project Runway designers and wannabes.
