The Hunt for Red Flowers

October 16th, 2008 @ 5:32 pm by Ms Fondue

Mr. Fondue picked our flowers.

I think he hates that I tell people that, but it’s true. We knew we wanted some sort of red flowers, so I began collecting images of all-red bouquets.

Source: The Knot

Mr. Fondue always gave me the same reaction whenever I showed him the newest ones, however: “Meh.”

Then one Saturday afternoon, in our typical fashion, I was watching Martha Stewart On Demand while Mr. Fondue was playing with his PSP. One of the segments was on bouquets and how each flower has a different meaning. Martha held up the Fall 2003 issue of Martha Stewart Weddings to explain what each flower in the bouquet on the cover meant. It was a very pretty, all-red bouquet.

“What do you think of that one?” I asked, nudging Mr. Fondue to get him to pay attention.

He glanced up at the screen briefly, then did a double-take. “Yes. That one!” he said, before continuing with his game.

And so, our flowers were chosen.

According to our florist, my bouquet will consist of thirteen black magic roses, four stems of mini spray red roses, ten red tulips, nine dahlias, three dark red lilies, mini carnations, three burgundy peonies, red hypericum berries or rose hips (whichever is available), and accented with red gems.

My maid of honor will have seven black magic roses, four tulips, and mini carnations. The other bridesmaids will carry five black magic roses and three tulips.

Mr. Fondue’s boutonniere will be a peony with leaf and rose hip berry. The other boutonnieres will have a red charlotte rose with green leaf, except our little ring bearers, who will each have a boutonniere with a mini red rose.

Finally, our mothers’ corsages will consist of one red charlotte rose, one red tulip, mini carnations, and greens.

My biggest dilemma is: what color ribbon should we use on the bouquets? The bridesmaids will be wearing black dresses with white sashes; I will be wearing white. Should I have a white ribbon and they have black? Should there be more contrast? Should we have red? Help me, hive!

that bouquet is beautiful! i would say a red or black ribbon. if it were my bouquet i would definitely avoid white. i like the ribbon on the magazine cover a lot, so perhaps a ribbons with some different shades of red? definitely let us know when you’ve figured it out!

@JanieLeigh: I’m with you JanieLeigh… I think the white would be too bright. Go for the different shades of red to accent the different flowers you’ve chosen. :)

I third avoiding white. Something fun, though is maybe tiny polka-dotted ribbon? Just to have more of the colors together–the bridesmaids could have red with black or white polka dots, and you could have black with white or red.

The flowers are going to look great!

I had an all red bouquet.

What about if you had a red ribbon and they had black? I think it will still look fabulous with monochromatic ribbons!

I love an all red bouquet. Mrs. Bee had a gorgeous one for her wedding. http://x9a.xanga.com/50b80606772315062991/b4453094.jpg

I think black ribbon for them cause otherwise it is going to stick out wierdly from their dresses and distract from the flowers. For yours I would also agree something in more of a muted red would be a good complement for your bouquet without being distracting, black woud be too much against your dress and with the red flowers.

I’d say either black ribbons, or maybe a soft olive green, or an antique gold color. There’s that ribbon that changes color depending in the angle you look at it - there’s one that red and the antique gold. It would be stunning. Little white pearls. Lovely.

I love the flowers I love those dahlias. I agree about not having white, maybe you could do a black and red ribbon for the bm’s, I have seen how some bouquets have a one color wrapped around the whole thing then ribbons tied in knots all the way up the handle, I know I am not describing this right it almost looks like bows from far away, I just looked it up on here, Mrs. Flamingo had an example in her mock up bouquet post although hers is one color. With some sort of red for yours, something that could add some texture without making it look too busy. I wish I had all my flowers picked out like you do!

How about using a black ribbon with a white stripe for the BMs and do the opposite for yourself or Have yours be white with a red stripe.

What about a patterned ribbon incorporating a few of the colors?

I really like your idea to add a splash of color to the wedding with the red bouquet. I think a black ribbon would look really nice and compliment the dresses.
