Bag Lady from Bali

October 17th, 2008 @ 2:22 pm by Mrs. Meatball

‘Memba how I promised you I’d reveal the greater uses of our Ganesha inspired logo?

You can stop holding your breath, cuz you’re about to get some info, yo! My awesome sister (and trusty bridesmaid) recently returned from a 6-week trip to Bali, where she helped get my awesome out-of-town bags made!

We always knew we wanted personalized bags (cuz that’s how we roll), and definitely wanted reusable ones to suit our Eco-Green endeavors… but being broke-ass doesn’t really suit either of those desires. So, when my sister and bro-in-law came through town on their way to Bali, and mentioned they could get bags made for a fraction of American prices, I was all about it. I sent the file to their contact in Bali, and the bags were ready within a week! My sis was generous enough to carry all 50 home with her, to save me shipping costs. I couldn’t believe how beautifully they turned out! They were even better than we dreamed they’d be.

All told, we got 50 custom canvas bags with two colors printed, for $80 dollars. You just can’t beat it! Yes, I know I could have used paper bags for much less, but my carbon karma would have been no bueno. And I think… I hope… that they’re just cute enough that people will actually reuse them, even if just for groceries.

Ah, how I wish we could get everything from Bali. Our broke-ass wedding would be. so. pimp.

We plan to stuff the bags with all sorts of goodies, creature comforts and travel necessities—along with the requisite itinerary and maps, of course! We’ll attach a note to explain the meaning of our logo, too—so our friends and family aren’t like, “What the (insert expletive) does this elephant have to do with weddings?”

What do you think? Worth the splurge? Would you use it again?

I think that is the cutest OOT bag! I like that it isn’t screamin’ wedding. I think that increases its reuse chances. I would totally rock that bag at the market.

I think it is just abstract enough to get used again. If it was all hearts and swirls people might be embarrassed or hesitant, but how sweet is that graphic? I’m with Dumpling about the extras :)

High five! Definitely pimpin’! I think it’s great that you’re attaching an explanation of the logo, that will make them even more special.

They’re really beautiful, and I don’t mean to rain on your parade, but I’m always a little worried when I hear “cheap [fabric item] from [Asian country]“. Yes, it is saving trees, but are humans being exploited because of it? I really don’t mean to be judgmental, and I do hope that you were a step ahead of me and thought of this already. :)

@ December: I am one step ahead :) Kadek, the man who makes these bags, is a friend of my sister. We know exactly how he works and who works for him - so we could feel confident he is on the up and up. Its definitely a valid concern in other circumstances, and one that I am always looking out for :)
