The Suit’s Pretty Cool Too…

October 17th, 2008 @ 11:59 am by Mrs. Lemonade

My Dad is prepared for some serious rice throwing

My mom is a fabulous seamstress. When she was a teenager, her mom taught her and her sisters how to sew. I remember my mom recalling memories of outfits she’d made more clearly than the events she wore them to. While her Mary Quant and Betsy Johnson wannabes were pretty sweet, they could never compare to my favorite piece of hers, her wedding dress. That’s right, folks, my mom made her own wedding dress.

The dress was very simple and unadorned and VERY my mom. While I’m sure creating a dress like hers was much less intensive than, say, a hand beaded floor length lace number with cathedral train, I’m still totally impressed by hers. I would LOVE to work the dress into my wedding weekend—perhaps at the rehearsal. Sadly, we have no idea what has happened to it. :( Oh well.

Being the sentimentalist that I am, in the past (pre-engagement) I had harbored a fantasy of having my mom create my wedding dress for me. She did such a great job on her own and I have so many fond memories of sitting with her as she sewed away at one project or another. As soon as I got engaged, I started dropping little hints about my desire to have her craft my dress. Those dreams were quickly dashed—something about someone being too demanding and unable to sit still (who, me?!). Luckily I found Jackie, but I still was hanging onto the hope that I would have something sewn by my mom to wear on W day.

After throwing around a few ideas, we came up with the perfect project—my veil! Mom’s coming up to Austin this weekend to pick up my gown and to hit up the most fabulous fabric shop in town for ideas and inspiration. It shouldn’t be too hard. Seriously, I could spend hours in this place and send myself into a silk induced coma.

Are you or a loved one sewing anything special for your wedding?

I love the fact that my mom sewed together her own wedding dress as well and it was out of material that my dad wove for it and for his shirt. It has a great subtle pattern in it, unfortuantely I’m not a size 4 like my mom was at the time!

Awwwww, I LOVE your mom’s dress. Of course I’m obsessed with 70s style (which I’m assuming this is?)

My mom made my wedding dress. I was *so* sad to take it off at the end of the day - it was the most spectacular dress. It was such a fun process from picking the design, to getting the fabric and all the fittings. I made the pocket scarf for my groom and embroidered “it’s about to get better”…the phrase he said right before he proposed!

Your mom was quite the seamstress. SO sad that the dress is nowhere to be found. The veil is such a great replacement though.

I love that she’s making your veil. Could you wear her dress for some part of the weekend (like the rehearsal dinner) as well? It looks very chic and modern.

My mom made her own dress.. and she HATED it from the moment she started sewing. Growing up, she sewed everything for us girls… however, she did not sew my wedding dress - mostly because she can’t ever get anything finished on time, and she’d be finishing it as I walked down the aisle. However, her best friend did sew my wedding dress, and helped us work together for the custom design I wanted. Ever since I can remember as a little girl, a non-homemade wedding dress was not an option.

Amazingly enough, she sewed the dress from start to finish in less than 2 weeks. She also made the veil, bouquet, bout’s, altar flowers and centerpieces. What an amazing woman!

my mom made my veil as well and it turned out beautifully. it was a bit stressful for her, but mainly because she procrastinated a bit, though it was done in plenty of time and more fabulous than either of us had anticipated. :) it meant a lot to me to have something hand made and even more that it was my own super crafty mom that did it!

I need to see and hear more about Jackie. I mean, really Miss L! You know it’s all about the bridal fashion porn for Dumpling!
But back to your post- I think I’m making my own veil. The one I wanted was $350 for a peice of cut edged, no frills tulle. I don’t think so! So, we’ll see how that goes. Good luck to Mama Lemonade! Cant wait to see what you guys come up with!

My mom is sewing my wedding dress! As soon as I got engaged, I asked her. We looked at so many beautiful dresses, and she started to doubt herself, but she eventually remembered how wonderful she is as a seamstress and we just had my first fitting today! We based it off a dress that I really liked, and now its become our own design influenced by another. It is so exciting to work with her on it, and I’m learning how to sew in new ways at the same time. I learned how to draft my own patterns last week! It is so exciting!!

My mom is quite the seamstress too. I really feel guilty that I wouldn’t be able to use a sewing machine to hem my own pants, let alone sew a wedding dress. I need to learn…

My mom is sewing my wedding dress, also! She actually had to convince me to let her do it, though. She made my older sister’s wedding dress three years ago, too. We had toyed with the idea of her sewing the bridesmaid dresses (she sewed the one I wore for my sister’s wedding) but have since found the perfect dresses for all of them. The main reason (other than showing her love and support) for sewing my dress is to help cut costs, however we ended up purchasing about $350 worth of french lace! So much for the super savings!

My mom made her wedding dress- a lace sleeved, caped, ultimate 70s wedding number- and the very first this she said when we told her we were engaged was, “Can I make your dress?!” I’m in the process of picking out dresses I like and then we’ll create the pattern and shop for fabrics. I’m very excited, and looking forward to having a handmade (capeless!) wedding dress!
