My DIY “Air Makers”

October 17th, 2008 @ 11:29 am by Mrs. Sushi

I have been doing lil’ wedding blush projects here and there, hoping to get most out of the way so when we are finally in the final weeks, I won’t be running around like a headless chicken. So my first project was… palm fans!

My DIY Air Makers : wedding ceremony diy favors hawaii Loridec inspiration Knottie: Married2MrWright

My idea was to have these efficient palm fans sitting on every chair at the ceremony, so when wedding guests sit down, they each have their own “air maker” for comfort during the ceremony.

In “The Knot” world, it’s not the most original idea, but I can guarantee that no guest attending our wedding had a palm fan waiting for them on their seats at any other wedding they’ve ever attended in the past.

So, Mr. Sushi’s mother’s friend (did you get all that?!) had a trip planned to the Philippines, and I asked her if she could bring us back some palm fans. I originally looked online to order them, and the cheapest I saw were $8.99 per dozen. Not too bad, but knowing that these are made in the Philippines, I was pretty sure I could get them cheaper. Hey, I’m on a budget! Sure enough, she brought back 25 fans for me. I actually have no idea how much they cost, since mother-in-law Sushi wouldn’t let me pay for them, but I’m pretty sure it was somewhere around $5.00 for all 25, or some outrageous price like that.

Next step… make them puuuuurty.

My supplies: palm fan, scissors, glue gun, glue sticks, ribbon.

My DIY Air Makers : wedding ceremony diy favors hawaii Palmfan01Step 1: Feed ribbon through fan. There should be an opening or a hole of some sort that makes this step easy.

My DIY Air Makers : wedding ceremony diy favors hawaii Palmfan02My DIY Air Makers : wedding ceremony diy favors hawaii Palmfan03Step 2: Wrap ribbon around handle and feel through opposing hole. Alright, so I’m not the best at giving directions! Hopefully my images speak volumes.

My DIY Air Makers : wedding ceremony diy favors hawaii Palmfan04Step 3. Keep wrapping ribbon tightly around the handle until the handle is completely covered.

My DIY Air Makers : wedding ceremony diy favors hawaii Palmfan05Step 4: Hot glue the end of the ribbon to the fan. Ta-da!

Pau!

The ribbon brings back some color to these natural fans. After seeing Knottie eyeheartmike use colored fans for her wedding, I wished I would’ve gotten red fans instead. Oh well.

Will you provide some heat relief (or warmth, for winter brides) for your guests?

Ooh! Very pretty!

Our church has no electricity, so no heat. I am hoping it’s not too cold next October…. Maybe I’ll offer pashminas. Or just blankets so people can stuggle up. The pews are box pews, so snuggling would be easy and fun!

i think those beautiful fans will look great in your outdoor wedding! We were thinking the other day what we could do to fight the May heat here in Mexico, so we decided to have a ‘night indoor wedding’ in a ball room with air conditioner! but if we were doing a ‘day outdoor wedding’, those fans will be a ‘must’!!

Hi Miss Sushi! These palm fans are actually super inexpensive and I got mine int eh Philippines too. I had several fans left over and willing to sell them to you if you need more. I’m selling the small ones for $1 and the big ones for $2. What I did was decorated it with a mini pink flower. Please email me if you’re interested. ac_espos@yahoo.com

Thanks! Annette

Actually, I’m sorry I had the price incorrect. It’s $0.50 each for the small fans and I have to see if I have any big ones left. Price is negotiable. Thanks! annette
