Serendipitous Beginnings

October 19th, 2008 @ 1:09 pm by Mrs. Cheese

People always ask how we met. I suppose it’s the question we hear second-most-often, after “when are you getting married?” We smile, blush a little, and say (usually in unison), “At a bar.” That’s right. At. A. Bar.

I sat down at a bar and had a beer, and the perfect man for me sat next to me.

We didn’t know each other before that night, nor did we have a single person in common. I stopped at the local brewery to have a drink just to shut my sister up (”You’ll never meet anyone sitting in front of Tivo,” she nagged). He declared to his roommate that he was tired of being single and was off to find a girl. We both headed out alone that night, and ended up here, a year and a few months later, living a lifetime together.

I like to think that we were meant for each other. How else would someone just as quirky as I am end up sitting right next to me? How else would a guy with a penchant for breaking into song and dance meet a girl who’d warned her friends that her family often broke out into song and dance? How else would a softie for cats and dogs meet a sucker for puppies and kittens?

Here’s my favorite cheese ball on our first trip together to Atlanta, at the Dwarf House (the original Chick-Fil-A):
Here are Miss and Mister Cheese being (you guessed it) very cheesy. See the torn up kitchen in the background? That’s his bachelor pad, and this is one of our first make up kisses after fighting about the renovating work we were doing.
And here we are in our new house, showing off our newly refinished floors!
Now, your turn! How did you meet your beloved? Did any of you meet at a bar, like we did?

I met my fiance while on a date with someone else. My date took me to see live music- the musician being his friend. I met the musician and the rest is history! We didn’t start to date right away (that would be wrong) but we started when the timing was right. The funniest thing is that I had met my date on a dating website. Now I tell my friends that they may not meet the man of their dreams online- but they could have friends!!

I also think you are meant to be! What are the odds?

My FI and I met on good ol’ AOL. Yup, in a chat room. Not a lot of people know. When we’ve been asked, we usually lie and say through a mutual friend. We both know that once we tell everyone where we met there will be lots of criticism, specially from his family. I love it tho, it gave me a chance to know him before we even met, lol.

That is such a cute story! I met my guy on MySpace. Definitely don’t tell that to just anyone. He was going into his 6th year at Ohio University and looking for a few new people. I was going into my 2nd year at OU. He said he saw my picture and thought why not. Funny thing is…he messaged more than one girl that night and I was the only one who answered! Over 3 years later here we are getting married!! I love unique love stories :)

We also met in a bar! The first year we dated he told everyone that we met through mutual friends(which we did at a bar). The rest as they say is history:)

I met my fiance in sixth grade. He asked if he could sit with me at lunch and I said no. He chased me all through middle school and high school. After a few false starts, he finally caught me. :)

One word. Craigslist.

I was moving out of a townhouse and my land lady told me she was putting it up for rent on craigslist. I didn’t know what that was so I looked. Then out of curosity I looked at the personals. Laughing at some of the silly posts of men looking for women.

To this day I wish I still had the ad he posted so I could see what it was that made me respond. We corresponded over email for several months before we ever talked via IM. Then quite some time via IM before we ever talked on the phone. And a bit longer before we met.

Who would have known!

i met my fiance at a bar too… and it gets better: I was riding a mechanical bull. LOL. Yeah, he was walking by, decided to stop & watch and after I got thrown off, I tried climbing over the fence to where my friends were. They pointed to the guy standing by the gate & said “That nice guy right there is going to open the gate for you. We’ll meet you over there.” That nice guy opened the gate, offered to buy me drink, talked with me & my friends for a bit, got my number, and here we are 5 years later and just 19 days away from getting married! i love our story. :o)

We met in a bar too. We kind of blush about it the way you do. We do have a mutual friend, though. I called her after work one evening and we made plans for drinks and appetizers. When I got there, she said she was meeting a friend later at another bar. So we went, we met, we talked. And talked. And talked. And the bar closed, and the three of us went to her house. Where we talked until the sun came up. The timing was amazing because it was a small miracle that neither of us had to be at work in the morning (we’re all in medical fields) and I was slated to move three weeks later. I was definitely not looking. We spent the next three weeks talking all the time, with little sleep. I moved, we got engaged, and I moved back.

I like that you and Mr. Cheese were both on a mission, even if neither of you really thought it would happen that way. I think you were meant to be together too.

I love “how we met” stories!!

Here’s ours…I had been happily single for a long time. However, I just graduated college and told my girlfriend I needed to “get serious” about dating. A few weeks later at a friend’s house party, she told me she was really excited to set me up with a guy friend of hers. She had been going on and on about this guy, so I figured I definitely needed to meet him.

My FI was at the party, too (we have mutual friends). Before I could get introduced to the other guy, my FI boldly asked if I wanted a drink and proceeded to make me a cran-vodka. It was all vodka and very little cran. We’ve been together ever since. Needless to say, my friend’s guy friend never had a fighting chance.

We too met at a bar! It was raining pretty badly out so my friend and I decided to change our original plans of meeting up with some friends and headed down the street to our favorite Irish pub. We ate dinner and then moved over to sit near the bar, where my now fiance was meeting up with his roommate after work. Somehow we ended up talking and laughing for hours. At one point, his roommate came over to join in our conversation and quickly left saying “I’m going to leave you and your future wife alone to talk.” (Talk about some serious foreshadowing!) We went on our first date later that week and have been together ever since. Now 3.5 years, 2 dogs and 1 out of state move later, we are planning our upcoming wedding!

Oh yes, Cheese, we met At. A. Bar. too. And not even a super nice classy bar, or a brewery, but a natty bar in Orange County-one in which you wait in line for but once you get inside you wonder what you were waiting for? Yup, love in a bar totally works out! Oh and in order to get my attention, my fiance hip checked me…yes, almost as bad as pulling my hair on the playground!

We met through craigslist too! Like Debi, I SOOOO wish we had kept the original ad that I placed. Sadly it is gone forever I think. At first we were kind of embarrassed but we don’t really car anymore — I mean, hey, it worked out! It’s kind of a funny thing now. I think meeting online is pretty normal nowadays.

@Miss Blush: We think we’ll have Chick-Fil-A at our reception! Renovating a house — lots of things, but I’m not sure fun is one of them. Did I mention that we have TWO houses that we’re working on? More on that in a post (of course), but we bought a new house and still own his bachelor pad — on the same street!

Isn’t it funny how many of us met our guys in bars? I’m sure lots (and LOTS) of women meet the wrong guys in bars too, but sometimes, it just happens.

I’m now jealous of the Craigslist meetings… what a great story!

Mr. Cheese used to joke that he’d just tell his parents we met at church… but I was like, um, what religion are you? So, that idea went out the window. Note to selves: must have story straight before attempting to fib.

We were set up by one of my co-workers at the time. I had just had a HUGE heartbreak and told my friends I wanted to be set up with someone new, and he was the “someone new” she thought of. A few late into the night phone calls later and we decided to meet for dinner. It was technically a blind date, but he will say otherwise. We hit it off fabulously and ended our first date with a kiss. We have been together ever since … 1 year, 7 months and 26 days later :)

We met at a bar as well! We were both out for drinks with friends and his group happened to be at the next table. Fate!

After dinner on our first official date we decided to take a short walk and a homeless guy on the street asked us “are you two married yet?”

At the time it seemed odd, but obviously he was on to something!

My FI went to OU, too!

We met through mutual work friends, but we’re both reporters and work at competing newspapers. The second time I saw him, we were both covering a tornado and he tried to butt in on my interview with a Red Cross volunteer (he didn’t remember/recognize me, and was very embarrassed when I told him to back off!).
We were basically just acquaintences at first. It didn’t become something more for a year and a half. I told him I liked him, he kissed me and BAM, here we are, 9 mos. later, engaged. Craziness.

Me too - at a bar.
It was the night before Thanksgiving, and a girlfriend of mine (soon to be MOH) convinced me to go out to our favorite suburban dive bar, to drink away some family jitters we had about the upcoming holiday. I almost didn’t go, and told her I had nothing to wear, but she convinced me to go in just jeans and a sweater because it wasn’t like I was “looking to meet the man of my dreams” there.

But I did meet him there, and I bought HIM a drink…that was, of course, after I got a clear thumbs up from one of my male friends I begged to “check him out and make sure he wasn’t psycho”. We talked for hours that night, exchanged numbers, and….(gulp) I didn’t call him back for a week because I got spooked.

I bumped into him again at the same bar the following weekend, when I was much more sober. We talked about my fear (and bad experiences) of meeting men at bars…and he said, “I really like you. I would love to take you on a real date, maybe dinner and a movie, and see where things go from there.”

So finally, I agreed…we talked every day on the phone (for hours) until our first date night arrived…and the date was wonderful…and so was he. :)

I met my FI at his office, which is one of many downtown businesses that turns in to an art gallery and opens its doors to the public on the first Friday of every month. I frequently tell people that we met at an art showing at his office, but the truth is, I knew that they always had free beer there. Class act, I know.
