About Mrs. Lemonade

I am a white girl—like, seriously pale. I spent the better part of my later teens and early twenties frying myself in the hot Texas sun, or even worse, in the beds.

As the big 3-0 marches closer and closer, I’ve been attempting to change my unhealthy ways. This includes my beloved fake and bake outings. This does not include looking pasty. Thus, the search began for a decent self tanner.

Over the years I have tried so many different brands of self-tanner, and I’m always keeping an eye out for a less stinky formulation or a lotion that won’t streak. About a week ago I was at the grocery store and remembered that I was out of body lotion and self tanner. Being the resourceful bee that I am, I thought I’d do a little digging and see if I could combine the two in one convenient package.

This is what I came home with. I used it about three times this week and I’m pretty happy with it. It smells nice (read: not rancid like many tanners out there), seems to apply evenly, and provides a nice healthy bit of color. The moisturizers make it more of a lotion than most tanners I’ve tried, but it isn’t creamy enough for seriously dry skin. The resulting tan is also a bit weak.

The verdict? This is a great 2-in-1 lotion for every day use. However, if you’re looking for a “just back from Aruba” type of bronze, your money is best spent elsewhere.

What is your favorite self tanner?

St. Tropez - comes in a mousse form. Still smells funny but the mousse for keeping the streaking down. Gives a great natural tan color.

The absolute best self-taner I’ve ever seen is Fake Bake. It applies very evenly and stays dark for a good amount of time. But, be warned, it really only works very well with people who have olive and yellow undertones. So, if you have that coloring you will love this stuff!!

Hmmm….I may just be embracing my inner white girl as I have yet to find anything that works quite as well as real sun. However, I do hear that being pale is making a come back ;) If you really want a good tan though, have you tried spray tanning. I have “pink” undertones and it has worked very well for me on the occasions I have used it. Be warned that it is smelly, but only the day you get it.

I love the bare escentuals tanner….I am seriously pale…in some makeups I’m too light for their products…the most I’ve ever been (recently) is their 2nd darkest product….anyway, I used that stuff on my legs, and someone actually thought I’d gotten a good tan in the week since I’d seen her…other than that most things don’t work for me, but I am trying a lady in Cedar Park that does airbrush…everyone raves about her!

I favor St. Tropez self tanner. It will give you the “just back from Aruba” look if you want it! I love it and use it whenever I need to make myself tan fast. You have to buy it from a hairstylist though, you can’t just get it in the stores. Also, when I apply it I mix in regular lotion as well to ensure a smooth application. I also apply it at night, and then shower it off in the morning b/c it’s smelly and looks weird when you first put it on. I swear by this stuff!

Ahhh self tanning! I, too, worshipped the sun. And I, too, am trying to change my ways before I see too much damage on my skin. I know the damage has already been done, but I’m trying not to make it worse. So I’ve turned to self tanning.

Most important thing you can use: RUBBER GLOVES. I bought a big thing of the disposable rubber gloves, like doctors use. This keeps your palms, nails, knuckles, etc from turning freakishly orange.

Most important thing to do before self tanning at home: use a very light lotion on your knees, elbows, wrists and all over your feet. This prevents a lot of the streaking, because the lotion soaks in first, so that your skin doesn’t over-absorb the color in these areas.

My favorite brand is SUBLIME by l’oreal. The best are the wipes– these produce a deep rich color, without streaking at all! If I’m looking for a light glow, I use one towel for my entire body. If I want more color, I let it dry (five min max) and use a second towel. Whenever I use this, I get compliments– from strangers– on what a wonderful tan I have!

I also use the sublime spray. It also has a rich color. I usually use it on my back, and on my legs, once I’ve used the wipes. This helps even things out. But the spray does take a little longer to absorb.

Most important beauty product after self tanning: SUNSCREEN! You might look tan, but your skin is pasty white underneath, so make sure to use sunscreen all over!!!

:)

I second Fake Bake, but gloves are a MUST with application. Hands down best all around home tan. Because it’s kind of a hassel, it’s not something I would want to use on a thrice weekly basis. I’ve pretty much stopped using them altogether for everyday wear and embraced my paleness.

I love Clarins and also Sublime by Loreal. One thing I have learned through the years is that around your feet, hands, knees, and elbows, mix some regular lotion in with the self tanner to apply in those areas-it avoids the weird discoloration that usually happens around those areas.

Paris Hilton was recently on the Tyra Banks show and she was totally sportin’ the “new” pale white trend. http://tyrashow.warnerbros.com/2008/10/paris_hilton_reveals_what_benj.php
