Now, About the Ring…

October 20th, 2008 @ 12:10 pm by Mrs. Cheese

Well, hello, there, darling. What a pretty color you are! Wanna come live with me?

Now, About the Ring... : wedding knoxville rings Cheese1 cheese1

Yes, I’m a dork. I’m a dork with that thing (pointing upwards) as my engagement ring. I got quite a few questions when I first showed y’all this picture, so I’m going to take you through my ring saga, as promised.

First, we went ring shopping together. He liked much more delicate styles than I thought I did, and then so did I. I knew I wanted something classic, not too “blingy,” not too expensive, and I wanted something meaningful. I have to say, it was great fun showing him things and watching to see his reaction. Anyway, in the end, I pulled together a bunch of links, emailed them to him, and figured I’d stay out of it.

Not so much.

Something kept bothering me, and I finally put my finger on it: I wasn’t being genuine. I’m not much of a jewelry person. I wear earrings (from my grandmother), a ring (from my mom) and a necklace (from my dad). They’re beautiful, but I could care less about that. I wear them because they’re meaningful to me. You know that E.E. Cummings poem? I carry them with me.

This isn’t the last piece of jewelry I’ll ever have but it is important that it will always mean something to me. So, instead of a cool-looking piece of sparkle, I needed to decide what mattered most. For me, that was continuity, the physical symbol of “forever and ever,” the personal message that meant that we would stick it out.

Also, I like vintage. I like the idea that the things I have lived a life before me, and that they have come to live with me now (yes, I’m a weirdo). I love that my furniture isn’t new (I collect mid-century furniture), that it has a soul (weird, yes), and that it hasn’t affected the world by being manufactured. If that’s what guides what I wear and what I sit on and live with (even my animals are rescues!), then shouldn’t it at least be a consideration now?

I did a search for vintage rings and found Fay Cullen—great selection, great prices, so-so reviews on the ‘net.

I emailed the poor mister a bazillion links, then admitted that the one I really loved best, the one that really caught my heart, the one that happened to match my cat’s eyes… was the least expensive. Uh, huh. As expected, this made him uncomfortable (”You want me to buy you an engagement ring ON SALE?”), but because it’s one of a kind, he indulged me.

So, here she is: approximately one carat of a “vivid light lilac” sapphire surrounded by teeeeeeny tiny diamonds in yellow gold. As far as Fay Cullen goes, they ship very quickly and have a great selection and prices, but they don’t take returns.

(And yes, in retrospect, I could have just gone with whatever he picked out, and I would have been thrilled… but alas, my meddling soul prevented that.)

Did you choose a vintage engagement ring?  Where did you find it?

I have vintage too! It’s a 1920s diamond and platinum piece we found at an amazing estate and antique jewelry store near our home. The jeweler told me I was the third woman to wear it … which I love.

@portlandgirl41: I love this! I wish I knew more about my ring’s history, and honestly, I sometimes wonder if it is actually vintage (it’s not “worn” at all), but I’m happy that it’s slightly unusual and wasn’t outrageously expensive.

@MexicanGirl: Thanks! Now I’ve gotta get creative in finding a wedding band that “looks right” with it. I’m thinking maybe a chunky wide band. What do you think?

I also got an antique sapphire ring (sapphire symbolizing truth, loyalty and fidelity). I knew I wanted vintage and wanted an estate piece- not something custom made or new. I wasn’t partial to diamonds, and really wanted a dark blue sapphire. FI was worried a blue stone wouldn’t look like and engagement ring, so I left the choice up to him. He went with a white sapphire and it was the perfect choice.

He got the ring at Bostonian Jewelers (in Boston of course) and they were great to work with (so we went back and got the wedding band from them too). The ering is about 75 years old and was purchased from the estate of a jeweler who had passed away before completing it (kind of neat that it’s 75 years old, but new- since it was left unfinished and never worn before me). The center stone is a white sapphire, the setting is platinum with diamonds and blue sapphires (so I did get my blue sapphire after all). I think it’s perfect!

The ring is beautiful. And how much did I love your description of why you heart vintage? Yeah, that much.

@rosychicklet: It’s beautiful! I had no idea that’s what sapphires meant (shoulda looked)… I just like blue. Now I’m even more thrilled. Your ring is beautiful… and what a great compromise.

@Miss Hot Cocoa: Hee, hee. Thanks. My friends make fun of me about it. I have this vintage Saarinen tulip table that I scored at an antique market in Chicago that’s a little beat up from years of use as a kitchen table. How cool is that! It was surrounded by life for decades before it came to me. Why on earth would I want to have the marks buffed out?

@Miss Cheese:
Are your fingers kinda large? ’cause mine are to small that a wide band looks like it’s covering my entire finger! ha ha well i don’t know if you got that -my English is so bad- but i think that in a large finger this beautiful e-ring and a wide antique-gold band will look great!

My engagement diamond is vintage but not the setting - but my wedding band is total vintage! I love it!

OMG i love your ring! I wanted a vintage or antique engagement ring but we decided on a new ring. I love how they always have a story behind it. Plus I figured I would hand my engagement ring now for my grandkids or something. I think that would be awesome especially since its been in the family for years!

gotta say, of all the non diamond/moissanite rings I’ve seen, yours is my favorite.
Definitely unique :)

Mine is a 1920’s diamond and plat. estate piece. The only help I gave my boy was to tell him I didn’t want anything large and I LOVED antique pieces….he found an estate jeweler here in Atlanta and I couldn’t be happier. I wish I knew the story behind my ring, but not knowing just makes me dream up romantic stories. The thing I love is it was from the same period my grandfather was proposing to my grandmother (her ring was lost in a house fire when I was in high school). I’m also worried about finding a band that matches…and wonder if we’ll have to have it made.

@rosychicklet: I have a white sapphire e-ring too! We were both anti-diamond, but I didn’t even know that there was such a thing until he proposed. My FH designed my ring with a local jeweler, and I love it. My wedding band will have small blue sapphires, which I love.

@rosychicklet: That is a beautiful ring. Everything that I would have asked for had I been involved in picking mine out.

yay! I love sapphire brides! I chose a 3 stone medium blue sapphire because of what sapphires stand for and both of us are born in september (four days apart!) so I thought it’s be special.. no it doesn’t really look like an e-ring. But I love it anyway!

I love vintage rings! I did the same thing as you, emailed my F a million links to rings that I liked (with styles all over the place), but then decided I liked how a vintage ring looks best. What he did was find the vintage one I liked best and went to a jewelers and redesigned one that they had so it looked like the one that I liked. I love my ring! It is so unique and not at all that classic style that it seems like everyone has!

I do wish I could have a true vintage ring, I love the idea of wearing a ring that has already been on the journey that I’m about to undertake! Oh if only those rings could talk!

@Brightasthesun:
Excuse all the exclamation points, it is late here and I get over excited about silly things when I’m tired ;)
